To-Do lists of today provide various ways or “prioritizing” tasks. Typically, this is done by ordering or by assigning – high/medium/low or numbers. No one told you how to prioritize, so your brain figured out a way – use urgency. Urgent tasks are high priority. They need to be done. No way around it, plain and simple. This seemingly logical argument is fatally flawed.

Let us change the paradigm. Focus on what is important not urgent. What is important comes in two distinct flavors – short-term and long-term. These can also be viewed as tactical and strategic. It takes effort to re-program your brain to look at tasks for their importance to you. Initially, you might even think what is urgent is the same as what is important. It takes practice and will to change this thinking. Fortunately, NotDoList helps you change your way of thinking.

NotDoList breaks the urgency habit by asking your brain to bucket the task based on its importance first. This is easily done when done in isolation. Prioritizing tasks only happen within the buckets they are in. So a strategically important task has no relative priority as against an ‘urgent’ but unimportant task. Once your ToDo list is organized in this manner, you are ready to work.
