Aquifers Around the World

Aquifers provide about half of the world’s drinking water. They provide water for irrigation, cooling, crop production, and so many of the other processes we rely. Yet no one sees them. We turn on our taps and see water. We know of the streams and lakes and rivers and ice caps, yet we don’t know of the valuable and threatened water supply beneath our feet.

What began as an effort to educate a small part of Washington about their own groundwater resources, quickly became a mission to extend the impact of this campaign to the rest of the world.

Solving some of the largest and most prevalent threats to aquifer health and safety around the world is a daunting task, but we believe the first step is education. By analyzing data from 35 regions around the world and sorting these regions according to their various issues we have created maps that outline the regions whose aquifers are affected by saltwater intrusion, slow recharge, hydraulic fracturing, and various types of contamination, and then go onto to outline the possible solutions.
