Tesco Drive + Reward for Android
Available to drivers aged 21 and over, the Tesco Drive and Reward app lets you prove what kind of driver you are, and rewards new customers with up to 20%* off car insurance through Tesco Bank. The great news is 3 out of 4 customers who use the app and buy a policy will receive a discount. At least 10% of over 25s will get the 20% discount.
What’s more, you can earn rewards from Tesco along the way simply by unlocking badges within the app.
Simply share your journeys with us for 250 miles to get a driving score. The app will measure your cornering, braking, speeding and acceleration to give us a full picture of how you drive. We’ll give a red, amber or green rating for each of your journeys, plus some helpful hints to help you improve your driving and earn rewards. Remember, safe driving can earn you a discount.
Using in-built auto start, we can pick up when we think you’re driving, so that you don’t need to remember to press record. To help increase the accuracy of your recording we have a couple of tips for you: try opening the app before you start your journey and place your phone in a cradle on your dashboard. If you prefer to, you can use the start/stop button and manually record them. If we pick up a journey and you weren’t driving, it’s easy to fix - just change what type of journey it was and we’ll remove it.

Depending on your network plan and provider, use of this app may incur data charges and you are responsible for those charges. If you do not want to use your network data you can switch to ‘Wi-Fi only’ in the app’s settings.
As with any smartphone app, it will use your battery power. Like other telematics and black box insurance gadgets, our app will use your GPS location and other data from the device to detect when a journey has begun and to record throughout. The use of battery power varies by device age and type, so you may find it useful to use an in car charger on longer trips.

The car insurance discount is only available on new policies underwritten by Tesco Underwriting and your quote must meet a minimum premium. The discount is valid for 12 months from the day you get your final driving score and will be applied to standard car insurance and not any add-ons or Box Insurance. If Tesco Underwriting don’t provide the cheapest price with your discount included, don’t worry, we’ll make sure we give you the cheapest price from our panel of insurers. The number of customers expected to receive a discount is based on current customers who have arranged their car insurance through Tesco Bank and the results of internal user testing.
Tesco Bank Car Insurance is arranged and administered by Tesco Bank and is underwritten by a select range of insurers.
Overall, it's a fairly good app and fairly accurate. But, If you stop suddenly because the lights changed as you approach or because someone pulls out in front of you without indicating, you will be marked down. This is fairly par for the course when driving in congested urban areas. It would also be useful to see feedback for each individual journey as opposed the just the overall score. I have one journey rated as amber and no idea why.
The app will not connect to any Internet whether it's wifi or 4g. It still says it's tracking my journeys but whenever I try to click on any screens it just loads for ages then says I'm not connected to the Internet. I was loving this app and I really want to complete the full 250 miles! Would love some help please!
Proves I'm a safe driver and hopefully will save me something off my car insurance. Just one peeve is that I've shared on Facebook and Twitter and not got that badge yet. Despite the developer's reply - there is no sharing icon on the android app - top right or anywhere.
Used it for a couple of weeks but had a problem with it finding location. I found it worked well if I set it to auto start and made sure I used a different app such as Google maps to get location before setting off. Will review again after completing 250 miles.
1. Doesn't record full journey often stops after few miles then start again later during original journey. 2. Needs to give feedback after each journey. Overall a great app and already recommended friends and especially young inexperienced drivers to use it as it's fun and great to read the feedback. Also nice bonus getting the small Tesco rewards.....
Revised feedback. The app is now working perfectly. The journey review is excellent as it shows how direct journey has been achieved and helps a lot with realising the best and most direct routes. I am often guilty of choosing my routes poorly, but this app program helps a lot. Wprth re installing app if it stops working.
I've had this downloaded for a month now and its only recorded 2 journeys (1 stopping half way through). Both these recorded automatically. I tried manually starting but this didn't seem to work. Shame. --UPDATE-- I have tried the below suggestion a number of times in different locations... opening the app first, trying different holders in the car. I have tried manually starting too and this fails to record results.
Would be better though if scoring a RED rating, if it advises WHY? I haven't a clue why one journey out of 33 so far was red when all others are green. Stuck to speed limits, slowed for corners, accelerated appropriately, etc. I did stop to pick someone up mid way, would that throw it off?
Great app. Easy to use. Not only beneficial but makes you take more note of how you drive and makes you a better driver for it! Disagree with anyone who says doesn't like traffic or traffic lights.. all comes down to how you drive in those situations as to your score!
The app seems to be quite accurate within its limitations. However what it and other apps cant see is all the other factors for a safe drive for instance lane discipline do you cut people up go through amber lights etc. Items which from an insurance perspective are all important. A lot of accidents are caused by people not being aware and pulling out in front of people
I have been given a red rating, my one and only red rating. I believe is this an error with the app as the map shows me driving over adjacent streets (as if flying) to what road I actually drove on. I have screenshot this and can send via email if need be. How can I remove the seriously wrong journey? I do not want it to affect my level of discount. Thanks, Kelly
I only do short journeys but have always found this app reliable and accurate. I have it set to automatically detect when I'm driving which means I don't have to worry about setting it up each time! My only problem is that I've accidently added a passenger journey recorded as me driving - and just my luck the other person isn't the best of drivers so now I've got a big stinking red rated journey ruining my lovely green record
Only had it a couple of days but all green so far I have it on auto but manually start and stop to make sure. I like the idea of tracking the journey on the map as been looking for something like that for a while. Will see in a week or 2 how it goes.
The tracking seems unreliable, I have several red journeys in my history as I appear to have jumped from one road to another without taking any corners or even using the road. My advice is check your tracks very carefully and if they don't follow the road then don't accept responsibility for the journey. Once you've accepted responsibility you cannot delete the journey although I do see why that is done.
This app might be really good if it worked. Unfortunately, it only records a fraction of your journeys. Very frustrating. Developers say it needs strong GPS signal but other apps I use work using same GPS so there really is a problem with this app.
Only had this for 3days so far! Two out of 7 journeys not recorded so I've ordered a dashboard holder for the phone. However I've already earned a free cuppa reward so shall continue to use the app for now.
It is very accurate and has recorded all my journey's it did split 1 journey as I had to stop the car to fill up at the Petrol station but that wasn't my end point. I liked the information I was given on my first journey but on subsequent trips I only get told if it was red, orange or green. Green I don't really need to know the breakdown but for orange and red it doesn't tell me why I was rated like that,
One of my journies shows amber. One shows red. Nothing to indicate why. Overall driving feedback is green. It's very confusing. Just got my final score after completing the 250 miles. It's a score out of 10 with no feed back or breakdown of what the score means. Insurance is due soon. Will report back if this makes any difference to my quote.
Only downloaded as thought it would add some points on my tesco club card....sadly it doesn't so won't be keeping it on after 250 miles (50miles done and I'm still in the green). Adding to your reply....no Clubcard points no keep!
Excellent app. Changed my driving abilities from a slightly erratic fast driver. To a more casual speed conscious and aware driver. Doesn't record under 1 mile journeys and reversing. Doesn't explain Red or Amber recordings though.
App generally easy to use and journeys are accurate. Sometimes starts when not on journey but that's my temperamental phone. Would like to be able to see why the app rates u amber instead of green. Give feedback on the journey so u have chance to rectify what ur doing wrong.
Very unreliable, doesn't work for my device most if not all of the time. Cannot get a GPS signal...fine on other apps. GPS keeps trying to get a fix even with app closed. Disappointed
I downloaded to my HTC mini and cannot get any journeys to record yet my Sat nav app works just fine, so GPS signal must be getting to phone. The autostart works but just no recording. No point continuing with this unusable app.
Basically does what it says really no issues with connectivity at,all so far... did have a slight problem with 2 journeys still being processed but that seems to have cleared now.. overall happy
Doesn't give you feedback on specific things on your journeys . I had a red journey and don't know why. A couple of my journeys also haven't registered but overall a good app
App seems fairly accurate. However I got max 20% discount but the quote I got through the app was dearer than both my current tesco renewal price and new quotes by tesco on the compare sites
Easy to use app and after reading alot of the reviews I was not sure about downloading,but so far so good. First 3 drives are all green and no lose of GPS so happy days..
Just wish it told me where I go wrong, it's annoying when it grades you amber or red but you have no idea why?
I really like this app. Easy to use, doesn't require the use of your data allowance and does give you nice little rewards. I would advise turning off the auto start function though as a few sudden movements in my pocket made it start recording a journey which was from my bench to the tea machine at work.
... a journey and I can't see any reason. Now it tells me that journeys are still being processed - for over a week!
Used the manual settings rather than auto. Don't need 13% off Tesco car insurance but reassured to have the feedback on my driving. To get 5* it would need a commentary on each journey
Had this app before. Worked well and got quite good ratings but disappointed in savings i would have made. Installed again. Recorded journeys i have not made. One was for 9.46pm it recorded a route that i have no clue where it is, never mind driven it. Going to uninstsll then reinstall see if that helps
Really good review of you're driving skill tells you where can be improved and also gives facts on how to save fuel and money. Just a shame this review can't be linked to you're insurance company or give you a quote at the end based on you're driving level
Only recorded 10% of trips.Dangerous as I am tempted to check if it is working. All other GPS apps on my phone work but not this. I will be uninstalling it.
I have had this app switched on for the last six journeys and it has not recorded one of them. My GPS icon is flashing away trying to connect but it doesn't seem to happen. I have other apps which use GPS and they work fine. I've also used the Aviva driving app and it was really reliable. But this is just non-functional.
Great idea. Free tea and coffee.would be good if it could shoe you where you went wrong on the map tho. But how do you share via the apps share button to get the badge.? I'm only 50 odd miles in yet hopefully tesco are cheap enough with using the app discount.
Doesn't record my journeys, eats my battery and stops Google maps from working. I'd they said that in the description then I may not have downloaded this app. Like the idea but it just doesn't work.
The app works ok however there is no feature to remove journeys that are clearly not reported accurately. I have a single red rated where the journey was clearly incorrectly recored. The journey is 10 miles shorter than it should be and what was recorded doesn't even follow a road. I don't want it to affect my overall rating yet I am unable to remove it or report it as faulty.
Interesting app, but would love to see some developments. Would be good to know why a journey is rated anything other than green (speed, steering, stopping etc)? All my journeys are green apart from 1 short local hop where I keep getting red or amber, I wonder if you have wrong speed limit recorded?). Also is your score live I.e is it the last 250 miles, an average of all or simply based on first 250?

Overall, a fairly consistent and accurate app but doesn't account for stopping at lights. I've now just completed 250 miles with rating of 7.7 out of 10 despite perfect green journeys with mix of short and long trips. Before I started using the app, I got a quote through compare the market compare website and tesco bank (my current insurer) came up the cheapest again at £359. The app has reported with my rating I save 13%. However the new quote with the applied discount comes out more at £405???
