About Polar Finder

When astronomical observations or imaging is done using an equatorial telescope mount, the right-ascension (RA) axis should be parallel with the rotation axis of the Earth to avoid star-trails and errors in guiding. The method how we achieve it is called polar alignment and it starts with a rough alignment of the RA axis. The best aid for this is to use a polar finder scope with a reticle. On the reticle the Polar star (and the Octant for the Southern hemisphere) is engraved and should be positioned over the real Polaris by turning it. Because the Polaris is not exactly coincide with the Earth's rotation axis but rotates around it, one should know the exact hour angle of the Polaris to adjust (rotate) the finder.

This utility helps you solve this problem by graphically showing you the current position of the Polaris. The application tracks and draws the position of the Polaris (or Octant) in real-time and also displays its hour-angle, the local sideral time, current local time and the longitude of the place. The longitude can be entered manually or obtained using the built-in GPS. The view on the display can be mirrored to match the view in your polar finder scope. Key features are as follows:

• Northern, southern hemispheres
• Naked eye, telescopic view
• Customizable marker angle
• Support for: Astro-Physics, AstroTrac, Ioptron, Losmandy, Skywatcher, StarAdventure, Takahashi and Vixen eyepiece reticles
• Precession
• Night vision mode
• Enter longitude of your place manually or via built-in GPS

Note: On some new devices running Android 4.x the preferences menu can be reached via pressing and holding the Recent Apps Button - which is a ‘soft key’ (not the Home button). On Galaxy Tabs there are three buttons at the bottom. The middle one is the main, hardware button. The task manager is just on its left side. Press and hold for about two whole seconds on it, and then the menu comes up.

Quick response from the developer when I was having a problem with my One Plus 3T. It was resolved in a matter of hours. Works perfectly. Thank you

I'm just frustrated with the licensing. I went to use it this week but it said the license verification failed. There was no way to see what the real problem was and I had to install and reinstall paying the 99 cents. Not sure what the problem was or if the fee is not a one time fee. I need it to set up my iOptron properly but would be nice to have had warning that I would need to reinstall to deal with the issue instead of dealing with it in the desert.

Southern hemisphere setting doesn't work. Edit: southern hemisphere does work. Just dont use the skywatcher reticule for southern hemisphere. It overlays polaris, ncp, Cassiopeia, & the big dipper. Is confusing.

Thanks TechHead brilliant app I use it with my Ioptron Skytracker and it works perfectly takes all the hassle away from Polar alignment. I will recommend this app to my astronomy group. Just one question how come there's no Celestron in the list of options

M70%
by M####:

Always superb. Cannot fault it. Out of interest, I have just got a newer reticule in my Skywatcher NEQ6 pro. Any chance of putting that new reticule in the settings box. Thank you!!!

I installed this app to use in conjunction with the polar finder scope on my iOptron Skywatcher camera tracking mount. Once I got it configured it was quite accurate and I am able to get three minute exposures using my 50mm lens with nice sharp stars.

New Star Adventurer grid makes 5 Star. Seeing earlier comment...It does work fine with Samsung S5.

Having had licence verification problems I was very pleased with the prompt and helpful response.

Good app but would be even better with the updated polar scopes e.g. Skywatcher. Any chance of adding more?

M70%
by M####:

A helpful program that enables a portable mount to be aligned to NCP more easily. A useful upgrade would be an option to zoom in on the reticlue in the app.

Just worked as expected, I had some problems downloading it but Joseph was a great helper

To get the hour angle in form of hhmm just try to change image orientation and reticle type.. Accurate app.

Really good idea but your AstroTrac reticle looks nothing like an AstroTrac reticle.

This works great for iOptron and now for my Losmandy G-11 with this newest update that added the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia to the reticle in their proper places. Well done!

Polar alignment made simple as can be. If your trying to get a good polar alignment this app will help . Simple to use and works just fine. I have a Ioptron IEQ 45 mount. Ioptron made it somewhat easy to polar align. This app takes their work to the next level and makes it even easier to get it right. All you do is look at the image it gives you for your polar scope. Set your mounts polar scope to look just like it and BAM. You have a really good polar alignment. This is a great simple app that works as intended. Own a equatorial mount ? This apps for you.

Is it just me or is the app missing the display of Polaris hour angle in HHMMSS? Why is it only in degrees / clock face time? I want to set my polar scope to correct HA using my setting circles! Please add this feature or correct me if I'm missing something. I'm new to astronomy so perhaps?

Can't select Southern hemisphere. The button does not seem to activate when selected and it keeps showing Polaris. Have tried on HTC and Samsung, same result.

Once I took the time to go through the Tools set-up (use GPS time, etc.), it worked beautifully using the built-in reticle display. I really like having the choice of views (Telescopic, Naked, eye, Diagonal). I was able to verify using SkySafari and TheSkyX. Excellent app.

can't pull up the menu on my samsung s6 with lollipop. any ideas how? tried swiping, pulling, home/back/recent app keys etc. Instructions say to use recent apps, but on the S6 long pressing this pulls up split screen mode. will revise review once this is fixed. Edit: just read through previous comments about force closing the app (s5 by thomas kirk) after re-launching it i now have menu icons. I've given 3 stars until I'm able to test fully. Dev: I assume that you align your scope so that the green dot matches where you see polaris in your scope?

N70%

Program shows what is needed for the alignment of the mount to the pole. Tried using it on a new Samsung TAB A tablet and was assisted by the developer in getting through setup. What more could you ask for!

The menu and options all seem to work fine. However, Polaris doesn't move when I move my phone(HTC EVO 4g). I'm not entirely sure how this is supposed to operate so it may be an issue on my end.

B70%

Night vision mode is always iffy for phone apps because the phone doesn't know about it. Usually I use red acetate but the stars are shown in green making them invisible through the acetate. Wish I had control over the star color.
