محمد بن جرير بن يزيد الطبري، أبو جعفر، المؤرخ المفسر الإمام، ولد في آمل طبرستان سنة (224هـ)، واستوطن بغداد، وتوفي بها سنة (310هـ) عرض عليه القضاء فامتنع، والمظالم فأبى، وهو من ثقات المؤرخين، قال ابن الأثير: أبو جعفر أوثق من نقل التاريخ، وفي تفسيره ما يدل على علم غزير وتحقيق. وكان مجتهدًا في أحكام الدين لا يقلد أحدًا، بل قلده بعض الناس
