About Monochrome

Monochrome automatically turns on monochrome (or black & white) mode when your battery is low, to further reduce display power consumption when your battery level is low. This means your device can last longer when its battery is low.

Monochrome is triggered when your device's battery level hits the LOW level as defined by the OEM (usually 15%) and Monochrome is triggered again when your battery level hits the OKAY level (usually 30%) as defined by the OEM. When your battery level reaches the LOW state, Monochrome is turned on and when your battery level reaches the OKAY state, Monochrome is turned off. This is all done automatically so you don't have to manage anything.

Monochrome also works on the GPU level, so Monochrome does not implement a hidden/invisible view on top of apps to enforce black and white colors. This means Monochrome does not run in the background and/or constantly monitor your battery level, it's only activated when your battery reaches LOW or OKAY states and after enabling/disabling B/W mode on the GPU level, Monochrome simply exits.

Why isn't it allowed to define your own battery percentage values to trigger Monochrome on/off?
This is because if the user was allowed to define the battery percentage values themselves, then the app will have to constantly run in the background and monitor changes to battery level, which will have a negative effect on battery life. Monochrome takes advantage of two system broadcasts: android.intent.action.BATTERY_LOW and android.intent.action.BATTERY_OKAY which are sent when the battery level is LOW and OKAY respectively. By taking advantage of these broadcasts, Monochrome is only triggered twice, instead of constantly monitoring changes in background and activating/deactivating when the battery level hits a user specified amount. This prevents Monochrome from having a negative effect on the overall device battery life.

Monochrome requires ROOT. If you are NOT ROOTED then you need to manually grant WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission to the app by executing the following ADB command:

adb -d shell pm grant com.suyashsrijan.lowbatterymonochrome android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS

Installed the app on my Infinix Note 2 LTE. Gave it root privileges. Worked perfectly when my battery hit 15%. Charged it. But on reaching 30%, it won't turn off. My phone is still in monochrome. I have tried putting it inactive via the main app, but still nothing. Even now, my phone is at 52% and charging, and while I'm typing this, it's still all in monochrome. Now, I've cleared its data, forces it to stop, uninstalled it, and rebooted my phone. And my phone is still in monochrome.

Great app. But would love if you could allow for it to be set at any battery % the user desires, as I am quite OCD on battery, I would like to have it on black and white 24/7. Otherwise, great work, keep it up!

Your app has caused a very serious problem to my device. I'm using OnePlus 2 phone. I used this app. It turned my phone into grayscale when battery reduces below 15%. After i charge my phone from 0% to 56% (in switch off mode), and turned it ON, the grayscale won't go away. O then set it disabled in the app. But still it keeps my phone in grayscale. So i uninstalled it amd reboot. But still it remains grayscale. Then i wipe everything (except Internal usong recovery) and reflash my ROM, but again it remains in grayscale. How is this happening? How can i get rid off it? Kindly help me as soon as possible. Thanks.

Would be nice simple ON/OFF option apart from battery level or any automation. Monochrome display looks even more aesthetic than random colors we can't change. So I would use it all the time.

I think it's a very useful app but in my Meizu MX5 doesn't work. It's possible that is a compatibility issue? Thanks.

Great app. Oh, and to the peoplewho can't remove the grayscale after 15%, then go to the setting and go to developer options, and change it there. If it is in grayscale, then change the option Simulate color displays from Monochromey to Disabled.

Q70%
by Q####:

My phone isnt rooted, can anyone explain to me the no root workout thing there?

Q70%
by Q####:

Works great, but really needs an option to either manually start B&W mode or change the battery percentage at which it automatically activates

Q70%
by Q####:

The app works fine but the greyscale setting can be toggled on most devices through the developer settings making the app not so handy

Q70%
by Q####:

I know I can change my settings in developer options, but it seems this app would benefit anyone that is overstimulated by their phone colors if there was a simple on-off toggle mode independent of the battery level.

J70%
by J####:

Its ok for automation but those who want to use even wen da battery percentage is 100 or below, u can easily enter developer option scroll down and ajust "stimulate colour space" to monocromacy and done dats wat u want ☺

I wish that I could set battery percent myself. It works depending on your devices default battery percent which is %15 but I could use my device with this grayscale mode with %90 I guess?

Q70%
by Q####:

not sure about saving battery but it definitely works on a non-rooted device as it says.

U70%

I m not able to apply in nonrooted phone what should I do

Q70%

I understand that you don't want the app to keep on monitoring the battery level, but can you at least include an always on mode (no matter what the battery percentage is)? Only then I'll reinstall it...

Is there a feature just to turn it on without the battery being low?
