About Dark Skies

Night time photography consistantly produces some of the most stunning photographs on the planet. Dark Skies is here to help you optimize those photographs. The longer you expose a digital camera sensor to light the more photons it is able to detect, thus the longer you can expose your cameras sensor to the night sky, the more stars you will see in the pictures. There is a catch though, because the earth is moving, if you expose the camera too long the stars will blur, when done intentionally this effect can be stunning, but sometimes that is not the desired result. To use Dark Skies, simply select your Camera, and the focal legnth of your lense, and Dark Skies will use the 600 rule to calculate how long of an exposure you can have. Thanks for downloading Dark Skies.

This tool is perfect for astrophotographers to get a quick exposure time on the go. It could be better if the developer would add the option to type in a focal length in addition to using the slider to adjust focal length. Also, "length" is mispelled in the about section of the app. Minor quality of life improvements that if made would allow me to rate this app 5 stars.

Poor implementation with only few cameras and poor UI. No good for Nikon or Sony

Q70%
by Q####:

This is handy when I don't have a pen and paper handy. The camera list is a bit out of date.

L70%
by L####:

The array of cameras they have is extremely limited. No Sony, only two Nikon. Instead of bloating your phone with this poopy app, you might as well do the math yourself to find your ideal shutter for astrophotography.

Q70%
by Q####:

No Olympus - Oly has a crop sensor making lens focal length 2x (14mm is 28mm equiv) Says in app description you can select exact crop factor, but there's no where to do so. The Flashlight doesn't work. Every time I try to turn it on, not only does the flashlight not turn on but the app crashes as well.

Nice idea but there are only 2 Nikon cameras both of which are DX format.

Please add Pentax K-1 camera.

Z70%

For nikon it might be better to simplify: Nikon FX or Nikon DX (instead of having two DX bodies and no FX)

Very small camera selection. No way to change the rule from 600 to 500.

Not useful for me. No Sony A6000 in the camera list.

Why is this listed at a weather app?

O70%

Does what it says on the box. Although I must admit I was looking for the app dark sky, but that's sadly only for iPhone :-)

Locked up the camera on my s5. Would give negative stars if possible. Crap

J70%

Adding a stopwatch would be great as well as a night mode (red and black coloring only) also since most people live in the northern hemisphere and choose to shoot the center of the milky way you might want to use the rule of 500 as opposed to the rule of 600 since those stars are further from the earth's axis. I only use the rule of 500 though in the winter 600 is ok.

No mention of any Canon that I am sure has a 35mm sensor such as 6D, any 5D. No Nikon 5000 series or 7000 series. There is a Canon 70 (does it exist?), no 70D. There are separate lists Canon, Canon EOS, a distinction Canon does not make. Max lens length covered is 300mm.

K70%
by K####:

You already have this app installed on your device. It's called "Calculator". You calculate 600/(focal length) = exposure time (in seconds). And that's only if you have a APS-C sensor. What a joke. Also highly suspect that the app is 5MB and needs access to your camera and can send information through networks. Looks like this is just for the developer to peep on you using your own camera without your knowledge.
