About TLDR Reader

The TLDR Reader is a streamlined, summarized news reader that also gives you short summaries of any web page for Android phones and tablets.

TLDR Reader utilizes over 100 feeds in 14 news categories for over 20,000 news articles every day. Each article is automatically summarized into a short paragraph for fast reading. This helps you quickly decide which news is most important to you, so you can read the full article using the integrated TLDR Browser.

Wish you could TLDR any web page? You can! Just surf to the page and tap the TLDR button to generate a summary of the page.

And now that Summly has been discontinued by Yahoo, TLDR Reader remains the only news app for Android that gives you summarized news at a glance.

TLDR Reader also incorporates an integrated search to find related news. Just use the "find more like" button to quickly show more headlines and summaries from related stories.

Thanks to the growing popularity of Stremor's TLDR Plugin for the desktop versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari, that also summarizes any web page, TLDR Reader brings the science of language heuristics into the palm of your hand.

Features:

• Get hundreds of up-to-the-minute headlines from each of 14 news categories, each with multiple sources. Categories include News, Business, Sports, Technology, Science, Entertainment, Politics, and more.

• Tap a headline to instantly expand into a short summary. Tap again to read the full story on the source web site.

• Swipe to engage language heuristics search to find related stories from across the web.

• Each related story comes with its own summary for fast reading of news coverage from other sources.

• Swipe again to search for more related stories to the related story, each with a short summary again! (this is madness!)

• Explore web results from our language heuristics search engine in our integrated TLDR Browser for mobile.

• Surf the web on your own in the TLDR Browser - and if you find a long page, just tap the TLDR button to immediately generate a summary as well as a short/medium/long version of the article.

All this in a beautiful and efficient interface that places the priority where it should be, on the information you need right now.

Doesn't work on 5.0

I've found this app to be a great way to quickly & accurately browse news. But what I was pleased to discover was that I can veer off the beaten path to read things that aren't included in the app two different ways— 1) I can open an original story (using Open original on the bottom left of any story) and I'm suddenly in a browser. In that browser, I can TLDR the story (getting short, medium or long versions) OR, I can type another URL into the browser, go to a story I want to read, and TLDR that. 2) I've found I can use the search feature within the app (it appears when there are no more stories available when you "Find more") and search for anything I'm interested in. I'm not limited by what the app thinks I want to Find more of. I would happily give this app 5 stars if it gave me the search feature and browser to use without having to go through gymnastics to get to them—but I'm still very pleased with it.

Atm, one point for existing, but a reader is no good if it doesn't have any content for you! None, nil, zero, nada... It used to work before I updated to L. Shame, this was one of my favorite apps.

It doesn't work and just gives a tl dr error and the feed is empty.

Getting a force close from the browser when trying to change to summary view; actually anything other than medium (which is the default) forces close. N5 Lollipop.

TLDR; people giving this less than 3 stars don't know what tldr (community) is all about.

To me, the obvious thing would be to have an option that allows you to shorten an article when you are reading it from a Web page that you didn't get to from tldr. It should be available from the "share" option in your browser. So instead of share and tweet it, I want to get the shortened version of it.

The tech behind this is baffling. This is way better (more efficient) than just getting the first couple of lines from an article. Well executed and good UI for a first version. Would like to see custom feeds in the next version, but happy with the ability to eliminate feeds for now.

K70%

I was hoping this would summarize any content. What content is listed is very limited and there are duplicates. A category can have a maximum of 50 articles. Very easy to go through those and run out of things to read quickly.

K70%
by K####:

It can only show 50 articles when you click a category, and its always refreshing so its easy to miss more important news. I still prefer browsing the internet.

Does what it says. Nice when you are in the bathroom. Not that I would use my phone in the bathroom. And I don't know what those other people were saying. It will shorten pretty much any page. Wouldn't work on Facebook, but other than that.

K70%

It does a phenomenal job at summarizing, but you can't add custom sources or share articles from other apps. It is, as of right now, just an RSS reader that you can't add new feeds for, that consists of summaries. There is also no option to remove ads. Update: This was really the only competitor summly and now that that is going away and this is the only remaining algorithmic summary reader, I rate 4.5
