About Rip Current Tracker
Help researchers save lives by reporting rip currents as they happen. Rip currents are powerful, deadly channels of water capable of moving up to 8 feet per second. They can happen any time, at any beach, even in seemingly calm waters. As one of the most deadly dangers of the ocean, there's no way to predict when and where these currents occur. Tens of thousands of rip current-related rescues are performed by lifeguards each year.
Your participation in this app will aid researchers from Stevens Institute of Technology, the NWS, and NOAA in finding ways to predict these dangers by submitting Rip Current Reports when a rip current is forming or in action. The data will be used to help analyze and study rip current occurrences. Being able to predict when and where rip currents are likely to occur will help keep beaches safer.
Participation in the app is currently limited to selected groups.
