About Understanding Dementia

Around 800,000 people in the UK are living with dementia. This number is expected to reach 1,000,000 by 2021 and to double within 40 years.

There is a lot that we can do to improve the way we interact with people who have dementia, no matter what role we have in our workplace or community. Whether you are a receptionist, a gardener in a care home, a housing worker or working in the Police, it is increasingly likely that we will meet people who have dementia in our daily lives. With the right knowledge, we will be more informed and better placed to understand what life is like for the person with dementia and how to improve the quality of that life.

This resource is intended to help you to feel more confident when working with people with dementia.

Dementia is a journey that everyone can influence, Dementia can have a big emotional, social, psychological and practical impact on a person. Many people with dementia describe these impacts as a series of losses and adjusting to them is challenging. This reflection aims to give people - and carers in particular - a better understanding of what it is like to have dementia. It looks at ways to support someone to live well with the condition, based on that understanding. It also looks at how supporting someone with dementia can affect. When supporting a person with dementia, it can be helpful for carers to have an understanding of the impact the condition has on that person. This includes understanding how the person might think and feel, as these things will affect how they behave. The person may be experiencing a world that is very different to that of the people around them. It will help if the carer offers support while trying to see things from the perspective of the person with dementia, as far as possible.
