UI is horrible to navigate through, push notifications open in phone browser and not this app, and there's no way to turn off push notifications within the app. I don't care what you say, sports is almost never breaking news.

Who would pay for this?

Needs work. User settings won't adjust all the font size. First page isn't enticing. Empty.

Terrible app. Was expecting online version of the newspaper. Not even remotely true. Am deleting it.

Very hard to locate what I am looking for

This is absolutely the WORST news app I've encountered so far. For each article, you get the headline, a picture, and a bunch of ads. What's missing is all the news text. Pitiful, like to was created by a 12 year old! (Sorry, kids)

This app has no real-time connection to the Merc's website. It is one of the worst news apps that I've used. I'm deleting it and will read the paper through direct link via Goggle.

No search?? What news app doesn't have a search?

Every time I read a Q&A column it is incomplete. Will show a question, but not the answer, or will show part of an answer without the question. This us basic stuff.

What a joke! Where is that part of the news paper. I used to read the local and crime & court section. Why would you not think it's not important to know what goes on in the community. You are a news paper so report it.

Downgraded to one star from two stars. Takes multiple attempts to start and keep running, and now the fonts are messed up and difficult to read. It crashes frequently and content updates are erratic. I use several other news apps (BBC, Reuters, New York Times), they ALL work MUCH better, faster and more reliably than the Mercury News app. It's an embarrassment for a Silicon Valley app. We used to subscribe to the paper version until the service got so bad we cancelled, looks like they don't want anyone read

Too much push of worthless fluff to overcome the difficulty of getting actual news. Used to be useful, but now is just a vehicle for ads.

The new app, does not allow me to see local news of entire bay area. It randomly chooses local news of subsection which is not even where I am. This is the major news paper of Silicon Valley, yet you thing bunch of tech novices are desining it.

Previous versions disappointed. Version 7 gets it right. It gives a nice sample of the news with a responsive user experience.

Useless. No local news. Got notification for weather flood update. Clicked on photo slise show, app hung. Restart phone. Can you find that weather report? No chance. No search function. No history. No weather.

Last version was way better! Can't even look up local san jose news anymore. If I wanted to look at all the fluff.... I can go to other local TV news apps or National news apps. The point of San Jose Mercury is San Jose? Not on this version. I can't even get to customize to stop push alert notifications. This version sucks.

Difficult to locate local news now

Version 6.2.6 is a step backwards: less news (especially California), usually freezes upon startup, stops responding nearly every session.

Crashes or freezes daily. News content good when app works

Totally useless. Why would I pay for digital access if the app doesn't work?

Great app, great paper, great writer's.

It keeps downloading yesterday's paper. Reading news that is two days old is useless. The tech people say nothing is wrong? Really?!

Cannot read it on my tablet like before.

Has gone from slow to non responsive. Start screen comes up slowly, then just a black screen. So much for the voice of Silicon Valley...

Who would pay for this?

Update 10.23.16: app is still garbage. took three times to Open it without it crashing. And once I got it open, the articles wouldn't load. Deleting it AGAIN. To read the articles you need a press+ account (which I have) the app tells me you're logged in but I need a press+ account! Wtf! I'm deleting this bs

What is this garbage 30-day free trial bologna??

I'm not usually one to give a bad review to a free app, HOWEVER this app is so bad, slow and causes my phone to freeze up, they should pay US for installing it. Do yourself a favor and pay the 50 cents to buy the printed newspaper. Your time is not worth it. Oh and Mercury News if you are reading this review (which I know you're not) fire the company that built this for you and start again from the ground up with a real App Development company before you lose your credibility as a NEWS company.

I like the San Jose Mercury news app idea. The entertainment part sounds good for San Jose.

It's garbage. Uses a ton of battery and basically makes me want to vomit.

Love the news paper... Hate the app... Takes forever to load.

Terrible

Current stories all about sports. Popular stories all several months old. News updates slow and sporadic. Over all, just disappointing..

What makes it the worst is all the ads and how many pages you have to load to read an article is ridiculous.

Keeps freezing up and it's all sports news....very disappointed
