About SPOT Connect

The SPOT Connect App pairs your Android smartphone with SPOT Connect, a revolutionary satellite messenger engineered to transmit messages via satellite from virtually anywhere in the world, including remote locations.

The award-winning SPOT Connect device provides connectivity to the Globalstar satellite network for sending location-based messages from areas beyond cellular phone coverage or around town. By simply downloading the SPOT Connect App, SPOT Connect wirelessly synchs via Bluetooth® with Android devices. The SPOT satellite message features are initiated directly from the app’s intuitive user interface.

SPOT Connect utilizes proven SPOT technology to notify others of one’s GPS location coordinates and current status. By sending a message to the Globalstar satellite network, the user’s selected contacts will receive a custom Type and Send or Predefined message delivered as an SMS text message or email. SPOT Connect messages contain the user’s latitude and longitude, date, time stamp and a link to maps. Established SPOT message features include Check-in/OK, Help, SPOT Assist, SOS and automated Track Progress.

SPOT Connect messaging feature overview:
• SOS - Emergency assistance request sent with your GPS location to GEOS every 5 min until batteries die or until cancelled. The GEOS International Emergency Response Center alerts the appropriate agencies worldwide – for example contacting 9-1-1 responders in North America and 1-1-2 responders in Europe. Custom Type & Send messages can be sent with SOS for detailed emergency information.

• Help/SPOT Assist* - Request help from friends and family or professional service providers every 5 min for 1 hour. Custom Type & Send messages can be sent with a Help/Assist message for more detailed personal help.
* SPOT Assist subject to availability.

• Check-in/OK - Send a Predefined Message or custom Type & Send message allowing your friends and family to get a message from you with your GPS location virtually anywhere on the globe. With a push of a button a message is sent via email or SMS to a contact group. You can also send your Check-in/OK messages to social sites like Facebook or Twitter.

• Track Progress - This feature allows you to send and save your location and allow contacts to track your progress in near real time using maps. With your SPOT account you have the ability to set up a SPOT Shared Page which allows you to show your SPOT GPS locations to others on a map. (Additional service required).

The SPOT Connect App extends the functionality of Android devices while making available new features for customers. Custom messages can now be composed and sent on-the-go. Users can store up to 14 Predefined messages and 10 personal contract groups consisting of up to 50 contacts each. Additionally, the SPOT Connect App turns your devices into a satellite messenger utilizing SPOT Connect’s onboard GPS and satellite transmitter. Users can even send location-based messages to Facebook and Twitter from isolated regions such as mountainous terrain and areas off-shore.

Overview:
• Uses the GPS satellite system to determine location and the Globalstar satellite network to transmit that information to personal contacts or an international emergency response center
• Send location-based messages via satellite to others delivered as SMS text or email
• Send custom “Type and Send” 45 character text messages from your location
• Update social networks including Facebook and Twitter from remote locations
• Provide GPS functionality to non-GPS devices
• Store up to 10 predefined messages for quick reference and sending
• Store 10 contact groups on device – each group can consist of up to 50 contacts
• On device SOS button for standalone emergency operation
• Bluetooth wireless connection

Please verify that your device does not have the Developer Option "Don't Keep Activities" enabled. If this is enabled, it will prevent the app from functioning correctly.

Doesn't confirm sending or record that it did it (pretends it will but bugs out) so unless you watch the whole time you won't know if your message sent.

I believe I solved the issue with this model phone. To solve: Go to Settings, under the "System" heading find "Developer Options" , scroll down to "Don't Keep Activities" make sure this NOT selected. I fwd'd this info to SPOT and am awaiting their input.

Had a Spot connect for years and hoped it would get better, didn't happen. Made many suggestions to them on how to improve and spoke to reps at demos. They are not supporting product quotes from sales reps. Better and safer to use Google Mape then Spot and they support and update it. I gave up when the satellite message service which worked very slow stopped working. I feel this could be a great product again if they went to a sat sleeve type product with battery attached to cellphones. Until sorry Spot.

The most infuriating app ever. Adding contacts is impossible (website not much better), bluetooth rarely works, crashes constantly. Did anyone ever do any testing before launch?

I70%
by I####:

Both app and device is a huge dissapointment. Used to work with my Xperia Z3 but like several others I'm having Bluetooth problems now. Even when it worked, it took far too long to figure out the quirks of pairing and connecting. The device itself works only with Litium batteries which would be fine, except for the fact that these can be very hard to find in foreign countries and are are furthermore illegal to carry onboard an airplane. Worthless on all accounts iow and actually dangerous imo.

Now the app just keeps crashing constantly. I have even went to the extent of factory reset on my phone G S4 and ever since the last app update it will not work at all. Figure this out already what a joke!!!!! (old) This has the potential to be such a great app, however the Bluetooth connection issues are horrible I'm on my 3rd unit and am using a different phone also in over a year with the same issues in both phones and devices, rebooting phone and device works most of the time but that is not acceptable in my world. It sounds like they have fixed this issue with the iPhone app. Ok so since updated app the functionality of this app and Bluetooth connection have improved.

Q70%
by Q####:

Connecting via bluetooth works exactly once, and then the phone has to be rebooted to make it work again. The application often crashed before I was able to start tracking (really, this should be a button on the device) or while composing a message. The braindead "device verification" will hang forever on flaky data connections (just turn off the connection, and it will skip the check). It's insistence on updating the configuration (addressbook etc.) is annoying (especially in complete absence of a data connection), and it's way too easy to inadvertently *delete* all cached data by selecting the wrong menu ite, making the device completely useless until an internet connection is available again. Please somebody reverse engineer the protocol and write an app that works!

I am very disappointed in my new SPOT Connect and the POS App. The App crashed all the time on my HTC EVO 4G. I continually have to power off SPOT and back on to get a BT connection. I never had issues with my old SPOT, it just worked all the time. I will be calling SPOT Tomorrow with my complaints

A few app versions ago this worked much better on my Galaxy SII, now, it crashes upon opening every (not exaggerating) time I try to connect to my Spot GPS device. Can I roll back to a stable version? Very disappointed.

Q70%
by Q####:

Upgraded Spot Connect firmware and installed Spot app on my new HTC One phone. Can't get either the phone or app to see the Spot Connect blue tooth signal, even though the device is clearly broadcasting it's ID. May be an issue with the HTC firmware rather than the app.

B70%

SPOT Connect stopped working with my S3 phone. SPOT tech support replaced the unit but same problem. Discovered the Power Saver Mode on my S3 was causing the problem.

Q70%
by Q####:

Downloaded the app, using a galaxy note 3. The layout is pretty poor, icons overlap does not have the professional feel for a app that could save your life. Could do better as we have to have subscription fees also.

S70%
by S####:

I agree with all previous comments on the Bluetooth connectivity issues. It makes the app virtually unusable. I have many other Bluetooth devices that happily connect and disconnect automatically without any of the nonsense you have to deal with using the SPOT Connect device.

Q70%

Crashes after 1 use on Galaxy S making Spot Connect useless. Tech support suggest reinstalling

Q70%

Spot works fine...if your having any issues, download the latest firmware to the device...and update the app

Q70%
by Q####:

After over a year and two different Android phones, I still couldn't get Spot Connect to work. Tech support has hung up on me twice, and after being bounced around, forgotten, and finally asked to provide my password over the phone (I declined), I got them to admit that their Android software can't handle punctuation and symbols in passwords! I've never run across another Android app programmed so poorly. At least give me notification that my password isn't acceptable!

Q70%
by Q####:

I should have read the reviews first... it is as most people say... buggy, and barely works if at all. Huge waste of money.

Q70%
by Q####:

The on-going notification you've added in the recent update, the battery status, never goes away, even when you stop tracking and turn the Spot off. Please make this a setting that can be disabled.

T70%

Nothing intuitive about this app. You cannot type and send a message to just anyone, the phone number has to be in a group before it can be messaged to. Only allowed 10 groups and groups must be created and saved while you have WiFi or 3g service. Took me about 6hrs to get it setup. Causes my phone to freeze, requires a reboot after each message. Really poor system. Hope I never need the SOS! $260 for the device and the subscription.....wasted!

I own a Spot PT2. Thought I would check this out. Will not pair using Droid Charge. Will install. Recommend that everyone just purchase the Spot unit itself. Works 75 miles off the NC coast.

Looks promising, and I've used the SPOT Connector with a DeLorme PN-60w. I was hoping to take advantage of using the phone interface instead of the clunky GPS device text interface, but I couldn't get past the pairing screen.

Q70%
by Q####:

The bluetooth pairing needs to be worked on and streamlined, but that could also be the phone issue as well. Overall the application does work well once connected and it's nice that once you set up tracking for instance you can kill the application until you need to make changes to save battery life. There is a display bug in the address book that the contact information is black on black until you highlight it to select. This needs to be fixed. Using on a EVO since April 1st.

by Q####:

There was a time when my GS4 paired to the device but that is no longer the case. Maybe some android update somewhere along the line changed something but frankly, that shouldn't be my problem. The result is that I have not been able to pair with the spot connect for a long time. I certainly would not recommend purchasing the device unless you are guaranteed it's going to work. That said, even when it did work, this is a terrible piece of software that requires you to log into the find me spot page to be able to do anything. And the map function is useless without an active internet connection, so what is the point since I would expect to be using this software while I have no internet connection?

Q70%
by Q####:

The latest fix I thought may have fixed my phone numbers but +61 numbers are still only +1 so still have to use my pc to program in numbers for spot connect to my profile. Will update to five stars when all bugs worked out.

Been looking into spots competitors because this app is a huge let down. The people coding this app need to invest some time into the android sdk and android design guidelines. Feels like a farmed out app or a group of programmers/company that just don't care.

Q70%
by Q####:

This works pretty well when it works. My problem is when it updates then it requires a re-sync with spots cloud. So if it auto updates and you don't realize it before going out in the desert and then you need it, now it won't work except SOS. It is a catch 22. Must have cell signal now to send a message. Wouldn't need device if I had a signal cuz this won't work w/o a cell phone. This happened to me with a breakdown of my truck. Didn't think life flight was appropriate. So then the device becomes useless.

The app crashes every time I use it. Since the device is very dependent on the device I'll be returning the spot unit.

Let me get this straight: you sell me a communication device ( not a cheap one at that), then when it can't send a message ( Motorola contact group/ message content erasing glitch), you offer me a free month of service? This device has the potential to be a lifesaver for me, figuratively and literally. However, this degree of negligence for such a detrimental glitch is unacceptable.

It crashes all the time with my Samsung Galaxy SIII. It will not stay open long enough to update my contacts. The old version worked great. Perhap InReach will work. The June 3rd has changed nothing.

Y70%

For such a critical service the tech support was brutal as well.

Y70%

The product software still does not work on my samsung s4. I cannot send a check in/OK message. Populating one required field (the send to fieled) erases the other required field (the message) and vice vice-versa. Poor software testing!

Better now that the force close issue has been fixed.

I love my SPOT connect, but the unreliability of the app lets it down. When it works it's awesome, but you really need to check everything is working/connecting before you go bush.
