Speed Reader Gold is now available!
Benefits of the gold (donate) version include:
The prestige of being in the elite
A shiny new gold icon
Updates about 15 minutes before those regular users
A happier developer
Supports custom colors, any speed, and multiple words at once.
Speed Reader can also help those coping with dyslexia because it orders words correctly. Other color options can also aid in reading for those suffering from dyslexia. If you are using Speed Reader because you have dyslexia, it is suggested that you keep the application at a low speed.
Speed Reader requires access to the external storage in order to convert .pdf and .epub files to .txt files. Files that are not .txt files get converted to .txt, and these .txt files are saved on the external storage to be accessed quickly later.

I can't actually rate anything, after selecting the file and "go" the app seems to load the file and then... well nothing. I was really thrilled to find the app. Hope i will be able to use it correctly soon to give a fair rating.
for instance 1. new paragraph should begin in next line 2. while reading a novel when it comes to dialogue part it gets mixed up and it doesn't make a sense. apart from this kudos for developing a great app.
Would be better if navigating through a book were easier than scrolling by percentage (very confusing). Say, support for scrolling per word/phrase/sentence forward/back would be useful. A speed test feature would also be nice to track progress. Also, I wish it supported more file formats like *.mobi etc.
I love it. The one feature I would like to see is an unobtrusive method for increasing or decreasing speed -- maybe by the volume bottoms or something. To have to stop reading and go to another screen to change speed breaks the flow & rhythm. Put that feature in the Gold version and I'll buy it!
This is an okay app, but it won't be great until it pays more attention to the cadence of the words and displays longer words for a longer period of time. This is especially true of words that are joined by a hyphen or a double dash. Make this improvement and I will be happy to buy a license.
Without the option for font size, the app is useless if you dont have a device it was made for. This font is too big and its unreadable. Cant understand why there isnt an option for changing font size.
I'm a book worm, but am a bit slow at reading. This app is like a perfect gift for me. Thanks p garrison, for such an intelligent concept!!! (still some minor bugs, though)
It doesn't pause for commas or full stops unlike wordflashreader. Which makes this my reader of last resort. Add that component and this would be the real deal. It seems though that the developers cant be bothered.
Font size keeps changing to keep width of text constant. Makes reading painful. Let me know when you fix this.
I've been waiting for this app for so long. I'm tearing it up while I commute to work at 1000 words per minute. I'd like more options but still 5/5!
Only useful app of its kind and very reliable. A few more options like font size and the ability go back a few words when necessary would make this a world beater. (Not to be vulgar but i would pay good money for a five star version!) cant wait for a solid update
It's a good app, but when it comes to long/hyphenated words I don't catch them. It would be better if the long/hyphenated words went ever so slightly slower than the shorter ones.
But doesn't give any controls to go back a few sentences or to navigate a table of contents. In the end, not quite usable. I look forward to future improvements.
I downloaded this hoping to be able to read journal articles, but the PDF to text translator doesn't seem to be able to handle the formatting. PDF documents written in LaTeX also fail. I'll keep it installed for the time being in hopes that this can be remedied. Thanks!
Everything was fine until the bookmark spaces got filled up. From there it wouldn't let me delete them when I got further in the book/started a new book. I have to move the % bar all the time which is anything but precise. Evo 4G
**Poor User Interface** ⚫ Does not show or provide the capability of finding your place in the text. ⚫ Must be used horizontally on phone, and will rotate your screen regardless of your phone settings. ⚫ No capability of adjusting text size, although you can customize the text and background color options. ⚫ Poor UI for pausing - it's as easy as a tap of your screen, but: 1) the menu covers the text and makes you miss a few words in the transition of states and 2) depending where you touch your screen, you may jump your position in the book, which is VERY DIFFICULT to return to (--there's no functionality for this, especially because there's no UI for looking at the entire text). ⚫ Poor UI for adjusting settings mid read - You have to return to the main menu and adjust the speed/character count/word count there, which requires several steps if you accidentally pause first (tap touch screen), and it makes you reload the file when you are ready to continue. ⚫ Seemed to do great at reading a 95mb PDF book, but unfortunately the UI is not worth the hassle. ⚫ Does not interface with any storage apps such as Dropbox or Google Drive, only internal device memory.
I specifically downloaded this speed reader because it claims to work with PDF files, but unfortunately it just displayed the text as one long continuous stream of characters rather than words, and often there were so many chars displayed on screen at once it was tiny and completely unreadable. In short, it cannot read PDF files.
Plz add more options like continuous reading, customization menu etc. It's best app of its kind. Thank you.
The only thing that could make this better is the ability to rewind by a few words. Trying to rewind or find your place with the scroll bar is cumbersome and inaccurate.
I had some troubles not sub vocalizing at first but after I got past that I was smooth sailing! Keep up the great work! My only comment would be that a simple ui change could go a long ways. Material design seems to be trending
Functionality is ok, but could do with onscreen controls - for instance: * Pause/start * 'Rewind' - ie: a mechanism to go back X words (the slider is clunky and horrible to use, considering 1% increments on a 89,000 word document will be 900 words at a time) It really feels like the core is good, but it lacks the last 10% of UI design & polish to make it a great work. I'd also like to see things like 'here's a list of documents you've read, their wordcount and your total reading time' so you can mark progress, etc. Addendum: seems like it might have issues - it declared 'end of file' on an Alice in Wonderland epub that came with Moon Reader a chapter early...
I'd pay for an app that supported android intents (select text or file and share directly to the app) so I could read online text with a much simpler workflow. Should also allow pasting from the clipboard.
Not sure where the menu button is on a s4 because the usual one doesn't seem to bring up the menu to go back to bookmark
Simple app, effective concept. Works on a pretty rubbish phone (Samsung Galaxy Y Pro B5510) so I rate it highly for all of those reasons above. You do have to blink sometimes, adjust the speed, change the background colour and move the phone back and forth sometimes so as not to strain your eyes, but it is very good. I read at 350 words per minute for half an hour while on the bus. Highly recommend! :)
it would be great if i can jump 5 or 10 words back or forward by touch or swipe left or right :)
using it to read pdf files is useless. Usually it will fail or just not read it correctly. I transferred docs to text files and that's when it will work great. I wish it would would with my eTextbooks from my Kindle account but I make due. If you can create text files for the reading you want to do that it will be great way to learn speed reading and getting work done.
Helps me get through books quick and allows me to maintain speed. I use EyeQ and this works awesome when I'm away from my PC. Thanks for the free app. Pushing 1200wpm and climbing
Great app. Many software like this one , but not many can read pdf (even if some advertise that they can). The only thing's missing is the red "target".
Just had my reading interrupted by a phone call and when you return to the reader you can only pick up from your last bookmark. Would be great if a bookmark were automatically generated in this case!
It'd be incredibly useful if this app would allow short pauses on punctuation like periods and commas.
Great creative and practical app. This app keeps me on task getting through material for study and learning and somehow makes learning easier. God job dev!
The only thing that could make this better is the ability to rewind by a few words. Trying to rewind or find your place with the scroll bar is cumbersome and inaccurate.
Do the developers who make these apps not use them? It's just not physically possible to read 7+ letter words or proper-nouns I haven't seen before at these speed, and the solution is so incredibly simple why has no one implemented it? Just double (or triple) the wait time for words with more than 7 letters (or a var set by users) and do the same for any words that contain a capital letter (but is not the first word in the sentence). Also hyphenated words should be interpreted as two words, or also give the same double wait time. great free app, but until this issue is fixed or a better re-wind feature is added it's just not usable.
love the app, nice and easy. However I'd love to see more functionality, especially for what this technique was meant for: speed reading documents, emails,.. I'd love to see an email and i.e. android authority app plug-in! cheers
Great app, but what I find distracting is the way the font changes size depending on how many words are on screen. If this were constant, then five stars.
I don't have to wait for that Spritz thing and I read alot more.
Very easy to use. I never had readed anything this way, but no difficulties at all. The only downside is the "words per minute" control, which gives options in multiples of 50. Opens pdf files easily.
does not work well with pdf files every time i open a pdf file it force close i like the idea but need to improve
It would be really good if you could keep a constant font size and/or change the alignment. It's a bit hard to read when the size of word keeps changing and it's position.

Reading from the app works well. This was my first app of this type. I will say I know I missed large words from time to time. I feel the non-reading interface needs improvement. In landscape mode it is difficult to scroll which is required to start reading. The app also lost its place a few time and my bookmarks also have varnished a couple of times as well. This could be more android related though. I loaded Balto speed reading free a couple of days ago with much better experience
