About DashLight (Torch/Flashlight)

DashLight is a simple and lightweight widget, app, and DashClock extension, that acts as a toggle for your device's camera flash/led (or screen brightness), allowing you to use it as a torch / flashlight.

DashLight works great as an app, widget, DashClock extension, or Tasker plugin – the only app to combine all these options seamlessly.
Each component can also be used independently of the others, if you wish.
The widget can be placed on the homescreen or the lockscreen (or both), and its appearance is fully customisable (with the upgrade), allowing it to blend in with any theme you may have on your device.
The app allows users without a camera flash on their device to use the screen as a bright light source.
While the extension is the first dedicated torch/flashlight DashClock extension.
A small Tasker plugin is also included (upgrade only), allowing you to do crazy things such as flashing the LED upon receiving notifications, or shaking your device to activate the light. Get creative!
Feel free to email me if you come up with any good DashLight-related Tasker profiles that can be shared with other users.

Please Note:
• Due to the way DashClock works, I am currently unable to toggle the flash directly from the lock screen using the extension – i.e. Without unlocking the device.
Unfortunately, this is a limitation of DashClock, not this app.
• The widget however, can toggle the flash directly from the lock screen, without unlocking.
• The app was added due to a bug in Android 4.0/ICS that prevented me from having a properly functioning widget-only "app" (Issue 24208). It is also useful for users without a camera flash.
• DashLight will not work properly from the lockscreen if you have Face Unlock enabled, as the camera cannot be accessed by two apps at the same time. i.e. DashLight and Face Unlock.

DashLight is the most complete, well designed, and intuitive app torch app available. Best of all, it is (90%) free, with no ads in sight!

Features:

You can now integrate DashLight control in to your own apps!
Simply broadcast an Intent with one of the following actions:
• com.spectrl.dashlight.FLASHLIGHT_OFF
• com.spectrl.dashlight.FLASHLIGHT_ON
• com.spectrl.dashlight.FLASHLIGHT_TOGGLE

Drop me an email at contact+dashlight@spectrl.com if you have any other requests.

Disclaimer:
Prolonged use of the LED as a flashlight/torch may cause overheating, and damage to your device.

I have only been able to test on a Nexus 4/5/7, so please let me know if you have any problems with your particular device, preferably via email (don't forget to include which device you have!).

Permissions:
• CAMERA – required in order to control and toggle the camera flash (categorised as part of the camera hardware)
• WAKE_LOCK – used to prevent issues with the flash potentially turning off when the device sleeps (e.g. If the screen goes for an extended amount of time, but you want to keep the flash on)
• BILLING – allows the in-app upgrade to work

What are users saying about DashLight (Torch/Flashlight)

Lock screen widget only turns on the flashlight. And once it's on you'll have to unlock the device to turn it off. Witch is very annoying. So be careful of children that might play with the phone while you are not aware. They might turn it on and leave it on for you to find a dead battery.

X70%
by X####:

Opening the app is fast, but then when I hit the switch it can take more than seconds or minutes for the light to come on. I tap the screen multiple times and commands queue up, so light will start flashing. Is this app bitcoin mining in the background or something, how can a simple app like this possibly be so delayed? Happens on both Samsung S4 and S5.

Q70%
by Q####:

Exactly what I was looking for, no ads, simple clean interface, and it works even after locking my phone! Thank you for being one of the few flashlight apps that work while the screen is off. Using an HTC One m8

R70%

Can't get the flash icon to appear in my note 4 in the notification panel or in the lock screen. Please help got the upgrade as well still nothing.

M70%
by M####:

Great app extension. Well worth such a small upgrade $. I've found it to be not only fun, but actually quite nice when you need a bit of light or a lot of light during the night. Doesn't wake anyone up either! Excellent idea. Thanks.

X70%
by X####:

The icon for it sucks though and the color of it makes it clash with many themes. They should allow you to choose the color of the icon or have a toggle for a square behind it to cut down on visibility errors.

H70%
by H####:

I could not see any icon on my lock screen. Due to lollipop? Without that features there is nothing in this app compared ro others. For kitkat its great.

R70%
by R####:

I upgraded foe nothing. Feeling cheated

H70%
by H####:

No BS permissions and a one touch widget. Plus extra features like auto off timers. Worth the upgrade just to support a dev who isn't pushing ads or stealing personal data like so many other flashlight apps. Working great on my RAZR MAXX HD.

X70%
by X####:

The first paragraph of the app description sums it up perfectly. I mainly use it through the locksreen widget, where it fits very nicely (using stock Android on a Nexus device here).

I join the rest complain that the button does not turn on or off the torch on the Home screen when the screen is locked. I've paid money for the full version and still there is no difference between the free version and the one with money.

W70%
by W####:

This app is a bit buggy, which wouldn't be a big deal if there were only a few other flashlight apps. But there are tons of others, and most of them are better than this one. All you expect from a flashlight app is for it to turn the flashlight on and off. This app barely even does that.

X70%
by X####:

All I wanted was a lock screen flash light. It doesn't work with a pin lock screen. On the other hand, i wouldn't have gotten tasker if it weren't for this junk ap.

P70%
by P####:

I have upgraded to have full access but their isn't any difference with the free version. Furthermore, it has been less than ten minutes ago since I have downloaded this app and its already crashing back to back. I would like a full refund. I'm also unable to set the tasker, widget on my screen. My purpose for upgrading was to use this as a flasher for notification calls or texts.

F70%
by F####:

I used to love this app. Had it on my lock screen using Framework. But now that I'm on Lollipop that's no longer possible. And the app becomes unresponsive after turtling on the flashlight. Sometimes I even have to Force close it. Too bad .....

D70%
by D####:

Most other flashlight apps don't have persistence and take 2-4 seconds to launch. This app launches in less than a second. If you want a fast and functional flashlight get this app!

X70%
by X####:

no ads no useless internet acess and permission, the least ram usage - 7mb! whereas the super bright led torch uses 120mb..

X70%
by X####:

The app used to be amazing, but now I get an error message saying it can't access the flash. 5 stars once it's working again.

X70%
by X####:

Stays on when you want it turned off. Uninstalled after months of difficulties.

T70%
by T####:

All I want is a lock screen flash light. Lolipop should still have this as a setting, but whatever.. I'll pay the small fee, I thought , as long as I can get the stinkin flashlight widget. Didn't work, and I gave up after 45 minutes of trying to figure it out. Waste of time and money

T70%
by T####:

Its very nice, navigating away from main scree & turning off screen can keep torch on+Have main screen widget.

T70%

Finally! I've been waiting for a flashlight that works with the screen locked or while using your phone for other stuff!

T70%

We can keep flash light on even we lock screen....every one should use it....

If you have the app open and touch anywhere on the screen then it responds to your touch. It gets really annoying (REALY ANNOYING) when using your phone for a light. Especially if you don't want to have to lock your phone to use it as a flashlight. It would be better if the app had a switch in the middle of the screen instead of being so sensitive. Also, there were many times the app would lag and take FOREVER to turn on the light. When it's dark I need a faster response time.

T70%
by T####:

Works but needs a critical improvement. It doesn't allow turning off the flashlight from the lock screen. You need to unlock the phone to do so. Dunno if the limitation is just for the free version. Tested on Moto X, G and E. Would gladly give it a 5 if this is introduced in the free app.

I purchased this app today and am using it on android 5.0 and I have no appearance options (my settings are different) or a way to put this on my home screen or lock screen...is the problem with android 5.0 or?

This tool works well on Galaxy S5. Turns on at nearly the same speed as the system light and has much better looking widget icon.

Sluggish under lollipop. Worked like a champ under KitKat. I'll raise my review once fixed. Otherwise just what I need.

I knew there had to be a way for my maxx to use the flash light like the iPhone can without unlocking. Of course I just had to look a bit and now it works even better than the iPhone.

Samsung decided to limit lockscreen access, so until I root the phone, I'll probably uninstall this app. Samsung's fault not the app's.

P70%
by P####:

It's just a light, but the best part is that it doesn't require a plethora of permissions and won't sell your data. The app itself is nice to, great addition to the lock screen.

Q70%
by Q####:

A nice flashlight with home and lock screen widgets. The auto shut off timer is a simple but clever feature. It also has Dashclock integration, but this forces you to unlock which makes this feature kind of pointless. (This is apparently a fault of Dashclock, however.) I use the lock screen widget instead. My only real complaint is that occasionally DashLight will become completely unresponsive. When this happens, a few minutes later it'll suddenly wake up and process all of the commands issued earlier.

N70%
by N####:

Tried every lockscreen type. No options to add this. Does not do as claimed. Do like the timed off feature.

N70%
by N####:

Simple, no nonsense flashlight app that only has the permissions you want it to have. It's better than the other half dozen flashlight apps I tried before this one, and now I have no interest in trying anymore. Good app. Thank you, developer.
