Finally - a worthy Japanese dictionary, and a solid contender to similar apps available only on the iPhone. This app should definitely get more exposure! I could think of only two things that should be added: 1. Transitive and intransitive verbs should be linked to one another. For example, the intransitive verb 乗る should be linked to its transitive mate - 乗せる. 2. Kana table should have animations, to show how each kana should be written.

I've been a student of the Japanese language and culture for several years, lived in Japan for over 5 years. This is by far the best working dictionary available and I have used or looked at many dozens. The examples used lead to new vocabulary, new ways of use and gives pronunciation tips. The ONLY thing I'd like to see changed is the "History" program. When that file reaches a limit, it erases without warning. I'd like to be able to move that history to the SD card storage, or I could do a better job myself in protecting the Vocabulary I want to retain. THIS IS A GREAT LANGUAGE APP, AND GETS MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

It's a great dictionary for Kanji, but it'd be infinitely better if I could write out Hiragana and Katakana in the handwriting area. Only some Hiragana show up, and some absolutely will not pop up. At least I can easily get results typing Romanji but it doesn't make for good immersion practice.

Has almost literally zero capability to recognise handwritten kanji. Multiple attempts to write and re-write simple kanji produced 20 or so repeatedly different resultant suggestions, none of which were ever right. Two stars for other functions.

It is a great app to some extent - I enjoy that it allows me to hear a word/phrase as I am a new student learning the language. My only complaint would be that it doesn't show the romanization of the hiragana, as it would help in the pronouciation of the character/phrase.

I like the dictionary, but it crashes when I exit the app and re-enter. It's also really hard to find kanji with the handwriting function. I do enjoy the kanji stroke animation, detailed and various definitions, and ample sample sentences, however.

Compared to other dictionary, its word database is a little bloated. Entry is not so many (compared to JED's 334,227). But the UI is not so bad and complex.

this dictionary had been my friend in learning kanji... there are lots of phrases from polite to vulgar... looking up in this dictionary was fun and helpful when i tried playing any game with japanese language (by that, i mean the writing)... i tried to see 'em as romaji to understand, somewhat, a bit better... lol ヾ(*`∀´*)ノヘヘヘッ

Its an exellent dictionary... it has many functions which u cant find in single app. Things like verb inflictions, native pronunciation, stroke order diagram animation, handwriting recognition, example sentences(a lot of), skip search, list of kanji by jlpt, grade, jinmeiyo etc. are rarely found in single packages of other apps. It wud b better if sound files r provided offline and handwriting recognition is improved a little bit.

Sony Xperia Z3C - One of the best dictionaries I ever seen. The categories and builtin tags helps a lot in search and learning. The search is amazing, with a powerful recognition, helpful animated stroke order and tons of compounds. Best free app in years. The handwriting have some flaws sometimes, but is still ok, just using my keyboard handwriting.

This used to be the best Japanese-English dictionary available for Android, but it's rarely updated (last update 2 YEARS AGO!). So while it has a nice layout, it hasn't kept up as competing apps quickly & continuously improve. AEDICT3, for example, offers everything this app has, plus multiple dictionaries, a flexible attractive GUI, multiple input options, a myriad of import/export methods, add-on functions, and consistent updates from a responsive developer. This app seems ultra-generic by comparison!

Been using this app a ton as I go through my Japanese class. It's fantastic as a reference for almost anything I need: stroke orders, sentence usage, alternate kanji, etc. The only issue I have is that some words are missing every once in a while - typically certain onomatopeaia words are missing that I hear in songs I like. No big deal, as I can just Google them separately. Anyway, I certainly recommend this to anyone learning!

This is by far the best Japanese dictionary app I've used in android. It's fast, the information are all in the right place, there's also all those other searching options. But, recently I've been encountering a problem. The app stops working whenever I click on something I've searched. It was fine a few days ago. I would really appreciate it if you could fix this as I use it at a daily basis.

Did I just buy an app from one of my all-time favorite YouTube stars or is this just a coincidence? Regardless, love the app. It has a rather large library of words, though some rather long and extensive I particularly enjoy aren't here. Since I study Japanese (plus Chinese and Korean), I'm always traversing the internet for good dictionaries, study tools, etc... glad to see this app is among my other programs.

Edit: just realized the entire app is case sensitive. Throw a cap in & it doesn't work for searches. Keyboard auto caps the beginning of each sentence. Sighs. First I thought it didn't have a good dict (tried looking up umai) then I thought it didn't support romanji. Then I realized the not so quite obvious when I clicked around and saw in help it allows romanji. My main apps will stay as Akebi and Jsho. App is otherwise great. Font could be bigger in sentences & search results. Excellent example sentences.

Been looking for an Android jisho that is as good as one I used from the Apple app store a few years back (the ONLY thing I miss from iPhone). This one is pretty dang close. WAY better than the other crappy ones I've come across before this.

Used to be good. But now almost unusable because of the adds right were you want to write. Let Amazon go to hell. Also, compelitely disordered in its answer. Main meanings should come first!

This is the BEST japanese learning app I've ever come across. All of the other apps I've been downloading don't have any further explanations and examples. Good job! Please keep it up!

Recently moved to Japan and this really comes in handy in everyday situations. The built-in Kanji stroke demo feature is really helpful and the best part is that I can use it even offline. Crashes occur more frequently than I would like and the Kanji handwriting search needs a bit more work but other than that, this app is amazing.

The app has not been updated for more than a year. Its JLPT word list, which is very important for me, is not working. I sent a mail to the developer about the problem, but there was no reply.

This app is perfect. It explains in detail the different kanjis. You can write in Japanese or English and the closest definitions are displayed as you are typing. You can even draw the kanji if you know how to write it. If you don't know the word or don't know how to draw it, you can put the kanji together by the different components. All the kanjis with that particular component are only displayed. Today, I just found the section that shows you step-by-step how to write the kanji symbol. SCORE!!!

This dictionary has kanji drawing recognition built in, and has the basic features you'd expect making it the best overall for Android in my opinion. However, I encountered a glitch where touching the "components" button makes my phone return to the home screen. The second or third time it works properly but it is an annoyance. Also, if a kanji recognition via camera was a feature like on a couple other apps, this would really put it a step above all others.

Switching from iOS to Android, I had hoped that this would be a solution to my missing Japanese offline dictionary app. Boy was I wrong. This app took up space, crashed often, was very poor at finding words I had typed, and bad at recognizing handwriting. I often found myself relying on the Google Translate App and searching online for stroke orders (which were glitchy in this app as well). Thank goodness the app "Japanese for Android" has been released. I will be switching to that and not looking back!

It's hands down the best jisho I ever tried on Android, works like a charm on my tablet, but now keeps crashing on my phone (xiaomi mi note), can you please fix this? And I will give back 5 stars as it deserves!

So far this has been the best and easiest to use dictionary. It lets me save custom lists of kanji to study later. I removed one star because the handwriting recognition is terrible. it would also be great if I could create a quiz based on my lists.

Some mistakes in the Katakana tables - some of the romaji for the -ya/-yu etc lines are mixed up. Not very helpful for a learner!

This is the best dictionary for Android! The handwriting recognition works better in Kanji Recognizer, but that may be my handwriting which is bad ;-)

D70%
by D####:

Handwriting recognition isn't very good. It couldn't even recognize a simple kanji like 相 and kept suggesting to me things like 理 and 朋 which look nothing like it. And it would also be better to put the ad at the bottom of the page, it's less distracting that way. Also, the "copy reading/meaning" function doesn't work; no matter which I pick, it always just copies the kanji and not even the hiragana it might be attached to.

This app is very good to study japnese advance levels like n2 and n1....i am using it for n1 and the best thing is u dont have to find in categories....it will automatically show you the verbs noun proverbs etc.with the perfect example sentences and sentences have the hiragana too so useful.....best but not that good for dictinory and kanjis....thank u

Really love this app. It has a great ui and a lot of ease of use. However, the app will crash periodically on me. Not sure if it's an app problem, android L problem, or a phone problem (tmobile note 4), but it can get pretty annoying.

D70%
by D####:

Great dictionary app, no question about that. However, the handwritten character recognition is beyond crap. It's a complete crap shoot if it recognizes the character properly or not. This is inexcusable at this point. My Chinese dictionary app, Hanping Pro, recognizes handwritten characters correctly pretty much 100% of the time. Just copy whatever software they use!

My personql feature requests. 1. Something similar to imiwa's "Analyze" feature. Yes, it's not perfect, but it works sufficiently well to be useful. 2. The search function of the "Kanji" screen should accept kanji/kana input. 3. Ability to clear the search history.

Handwriting recognition is horrible, I'd never use it again. I could still using another app though, so it's okay. The UI is nice and clean! But It'd be lovely if you could improve the UI to be more colorful and pretty, but nah, do i ask too much? Overall it's a great job and this app is better than any dictionaries out there on Play Store. And oh, please add another word besides 'Japanese' to the title, to specify the app more lol

D70%
by D####:

The kanji recognition is very bad and needs improvement. Other than that the app is fantastic. It is user friendly, easy on the eyes (unlike many apps), and has a very large dictionary. I like how it has the categories so I can search for specific kind of words. Please fix the kanji recognition and I will rate a 5

O70%
by O####:

It has everything it needs to make an excellent dictionary. Example phrases for words, compound words for kanji, easy and efficient navigation and lists by JLPT levels. Everything I was looking for. Handwriting recognition is indeed poor, but searching by radical is better for learning anyway. My only complaint is it can't be moved to SD, for an app this large it would be useful. Great work, thank you!
