Another strn1050 owner unhappy with this news, small credit for Sony warning people in advance, but the advice to simply stop updating the app is terrible for a number of reasons. This is the only easy way to control zone 2 on the receiver, as trying todo it on the remote is fiddly and requires turning on the TV. And while we're on zone 2 not even the manual mentioned the limitations of that feature, which was another disappointment when I purchased it.
With each new version Sony is abandoning their older products. They could easily leave them in or leave an app that does not update but they chose to take away the primary reason for buying their products forcing me to buy a new amp. Time to abandon Sony on my next purchases.
So in the last 6 months Sony have dropped the support to the STR DN1050 in this app, stopped the tv guide and recording option in their app that supported their Tv's (sideview) and applied a buggy Android N update to there TV that have caused more problems than its resolved. After investing just short of £2,500 in the Sony brand on these products I was expecting more, much more. In my view once a respected brand, Sony will never be a brand I invest in again.
Stopping support for award winning products so soon is insane. And the solution, turn off all phone automatic updates is even more so. I like the app when I do use it but now it will be removed. Maybe Yamaha support their equipment for longer... Something I will check in future.
CMT-X5CDB and Pixel, functions well but lack of ability to scrub through tracks from USB stick is a fatal flaw. Long tracks, audio books, podcasts ALWAYS start from the beginning, making that function essentially unusable. Forced landscape is poor design too, no need. Cannot switch to BT Audio from app. Lots wrong, needs improvement.
lol this is a great update for some people.... It let's you know they are stopping support for some models... Doesn't affect me, but for those that it does... Kind of lame.
Another unhappy user who's spent hundreds of £'s on a remote system and is now being told it's not supported. If I'd known this would happen 2 years ago, I'd have bought the Denon. Won't be buying Sony again.
2 year old cutting edge amp no longer supported. Screw you Sony. It's not like you even tried to fix the software issues it already has. Won't be buying Sony again.
I have a STR-DN1050 and a STR-DN850 which will loose support from this app. They are only 2-3 years old. I will never buy a piece of Sony equipment again if they don't remedy this. Most of my AV equipment is currently Sony so I'm pretty annoyed.
Rubbish support from Sony. Hugely expensive purchase and they can't be bothered to support it... Different brand next time for sure.
I own a str dn 1050 and now have to stop the update. If I get a new phone I'm stuffed. Not happy Sony this is fantastic receiver your meant to make this better not worse.
Needs a darker theme to avoid bright white light in middle of your vision while trying to drive at night. Safety issue.
Thank you Sony for this brilliant example of planned obsolescence. Removing support for 2 years old models shows complete disregard for customers.
I can't understand the thinking behind Sony's decision for their STR-DN850/STR-DN1050 AV receivers to no longer be compatible with this app. This has essentially changed my 'smart' receiver into a 'dumb' receiver. Like a lot of other reviewers i paid a substantial amount of money for my receiver with the understanding that i could operate various features from my phone. I have a reasonably large music library on my NAS and my wife and i use this app to stream the music from the NAS through our stereo. This is the main reason why i purchased the amp over other brands. I figured Sony would look after their customers and would maintain the app. The difference in using the app vs the remote to access your home network is worlds apart. Instead of opening an app and seamlessly browsing my music, i will now have to physically walk into my lounge, turn on the TV, change the HDMI input on my TV, turn on the amp, navigate to network and then painstakingly use the remote to slowly browse through my music library... A ridiculous step backwards!! Sony, please develop a separate app for your WIFI/Bluetooth speakers and leave this for the AV receivers, or vice versa!! /End rant
Not supporting STR-DN850/STR-DN1050/ICF-CS20BT/XDR-DS21BT from version 5.2 is not very cool, without any replacement app. Sony is not caring for its customers...
Very dissapointed with the news that it wont work after august 2017 update. Version 5.2 above etc. My amp is For Sale cheap. Never again i will purchase a Sony.
No support for 1050 after August update?! Unacceptable and disgraceful behaviour. If not remedied Sony will never be considered in any future purchases.
I'll never buy Sony Again!!! Do not use any Sony Apps. They won't support hardware that is more than 2 years old with their app to force you to buy new hardware , DO NOT INSTALL, DO NOT BUY SONY.
I liked that the app gave control to settings on the radio that I was unable to find. What I didnt like was the inconsistency that the app would connect to my radio and then all the buttons that I was accustomed to would not work.
Previous version was far of better. The newer version has taken away many accessory support from my Xperia XA dual.

Connecting problem It'll take time for connecting the app. Even mobile and audio system contacted with Bluetooth, in app it takes time to enable speakers/audio device. Ones audio system registered or added in to app no point of taking time for enabling or connecting. I'm using this app for car Audio Sony MEX-N4150BT. User interface also need to change. It is black and white images with very large images. My mobile screen size is with 4.7 every time I need to scroll up and down.
There is no understanding as to why you'd cut of compatibiliy with your older devices. Your decision is very short sighted. It is only in recent versions of your software that it stopped crashing for me and now a stable, working product is being discontinued for no reason. Your decison here will affect further purchases of Sony products as we will have to factor in how long it will fuction as originally intended. Extremely disappointed with Sony :(
So I just got a notification that in August Songpal will no longer support my two year old receiver? Seriously? The whole reason I bought my $800 receiver is so I could control it through my phone. Their solution? Don't update the app, so if accidentally do so I'm screwed? This is garbage. I've been a Sony fan boy as long as I can remember which is the reason I bought this receiver but I'm starting to reconsider.
It's such a lame decision to stop support for strdn1050 that was advertised as a network device. Controlling the amp from mobile is much easier.Why not rollout another app for the new lineup and leave this as is.Or atleast make the apk available on your support site. It's disappointing that you retreat to support just less than a two year old amp !
getting rid of the stdrn1050 support has absolutely screwed me up. spent thousands ££ on a multi room audio set up 18 months ago and now it's useless. the previous update(s) made controlling zone 2 audio separately unavailable. nothing but issues with this app, wish I just got Sonos. would love a reply from the developer - alsi where do I get the previous version of this app?
1 million downloads. How many customers are Sony cutting off by their stupid decision to cut off older hardware. This is not the first time Sony has done this to me but unless there are options provided for last year's kit, it will be the last. Do Sony not care about holding onto and respecting customers
Can't you make a v2 for the new stuff and just leave this alone! Now I've got to fart around looking for the install file, store it somewhere for when I get s new phone in a few months. Thanks Sony. Anyone here who wants to stop this auto update, press on the three dots, top right of this page, uncheck auto-update. U don't have to disable global updates.
No support for 2 year old receiver (not budget version) when was marketed as having great connectivity? This was one of the main reasons I bought this one, to control with my cell phone and being future proof!! 2 years support for high end receiver is ridiculous, support should be counted in decades not years!! That's how long my parents had their stereo... I've been Sony customer for years (tv, high end camera, receiver, phone...) but this will be the last item I buy if they don't come up with a better solution...
Very disappointed that support is being dropped for STR-DN850. My receiver only 2 years old. Plus it was marketed as having great connectivity and being able to control the device from an app was an advertised feature. Come on Sony, figure this out.
Why is support being dropped for the STR-DN1050? Use this app all the time! That's a lousy decision Sony and I'll be sure to bear your 'excellent' after market support in mind next time I'm shopping for anything electronic...like a new TV!
Why Sony, why would you stop supporting the str-dn1050? I bought this receiver for connectivity and now you are disabling it? Why not have multiple versions of the software? Version for old models and a version for new models. This is just blunt.
How can Sony drop a major feature of the STR-DN1050 so early in its product life by not ensuring continued compatibility with this app. A serious miscalculation by Sony, and not the first time for me this year. I now fear for my Sony Android TV.
Was a good and useful app but as Sony will no longer be supporting my receiver it will be redundant and seriously compromise my equipment. This sort of action should be illegal. We buy in good faith, but not anymore, Denon and Yamaha seem increasingly attractive! There should be a legal requirement to support fully any product for a minimum period, perhaps 10 years or better still 20 years. Throwaway society is an expensive and wasteful thing.
So my £500 two year old amp is no longer supported and as you can't be bothered to put a toggle switch in to turn updates off I have no way to stop the app updating other than to turn off global automatic app updates. Thanks. I'd been thinking of changing my amp and this gives me some push to try another make that doesn't stop support after 2 years. Nice one Sony.
As with a few other I am also disappointed that my STR-DN1050 is going to be unsupported from the next release. I understand that they need to keep the app updated with new features to why not leave this app for the older receivers and branch off a new version for supporting new features. Customers with new phones/devices will now not be able to get the app to use with the receiver or even if the receiver is re-sold. Poor degenerating long term support from Sony again, seems to be happening all round as features are taken away from the TVs as well.
Really? I just bought the STR-DN1050 just over 18 months ago because it came highly rated for this level on functionality. In fact its still buggy and needs help, and should live in the continuing improvement category. Other apps/manufacturers don't drop older devices, they are simply able to limit new features. Surely Sony has smarter people then that? I could simply go in and stop updates as you've recommended but I don't plan on having this device for years, I will update to a newer device, and I won't be able to down load the version prior to 5.2? What is the fix for that?
Thanks very much Sony I have a DN 1050 which is less than 2 yrs old and now no support from the app what's your game Sony. Also the latest updates mean I can't control my zone 2 independently I used to be able to control the volume or even turn off the main zone neither of these options are now available. I bought this system so I could use a mobile app. This is rubbish service from a multimillion pound international company. I definitely won't be buying Sony again if this is the sort of treatment you get.

Going to hate the next update. Most likely will delete it only because I own a STR-DN850. Must be Sony way to get people to buy new stuff.
