PlayMemories Mobile is a free application that makes your Wi-Fi compatible Sony camera use more convenient. You can enjoy the following features by connecting your camera with a smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi.
■Send photos and videos to your smartphone
-You can easily send photos or videos taken with the camera to your smartphone. You also have the choice to transfer all of your photos in either its original size or 2MP files in one batch.
-High quality images shot with the camera can be shared on your favorite SNS or web service.
■Remote shooting from your smartphone
-You can remotely control the camera in any of the P/A/S/M exposure modes from your smartphone, while watching the live view of the camera on the smartphone. (* It is necessary to install "Smart Remote Control" which is one of the PlayMemories Camera Apps beforehand.)
-You can also intuitively control the camera, making it useful when taking a photo or video in situations where you don’t want to be holding the camera directly: such as night scenes, long exposure water scenes, or macro photography. (*Availble only for selected models)
■Location Information recording
-You can add the smartphone's location information to the saved photo in your camera if the Location Information is compatible with your camera.

Instructions are awful on this in my opinion. But once I figured out how to update the app on the camera, everything works just fine. Pretty impressive to have a live view and touch focus on the phone. Which may or may not be standard today but I've used a 10 year old DSLR up until recently...

Its worthy of 5 stars but giving only 3 cause its been ages since oreo android 8.0 launched and many xperias has been updated but you are not making this amazing app compatible yet... It was very easy n great when using in my xperia xz premium with android 7 nougat but now it won't work n i was patiently waiting but now its high time.... Make it compatible soon guys

TLDR version: It doesn't work. After a lot of jumping through hoops (you need a Sony Entertainment account to download the app on the camera - absolutely crazy requirement) it refuses to connect to either of my phones. No such issues with the Olympus software. Sony produce great hardware, but the software is shocking.

The app works fine but... come on Sony, update it to support Oreo. We go though this every year and it doesn't have to be this way. Google puts out pre-releases of the new version of Android WAY ahead of the official release.

8.0 Oreo has been out since september, and still it hasn't been updated to support it, and it's getting annoying, as i'm close to returning my AS50, and the application needs updating so it doesn't disconnect when the phone screen turns off or you switch applications.

Horribly designed app, does what it says but really really poorly. Has very limited capabilities with just a shutter button, it should include ability to change settings, record video. A transfer of Raw files would be amazing. The app cannot be be opened through multitasking. It needs rework. Please Sony, you make great cameras, just make a great app to work it with. Thank you.
