Even though a patch to remove the underlying vulnerability was released on March 14, 2017, delays in applying security updates have left users vulnerable. Microsoft has taken the unusual step of freeing upgrades for unsupported Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and fixes for Windows 8 operating systems.

The ransomware campaign WannaCry unprecedented scale according to Europol. The attack affected many hospitals of the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. On May 12, some NHS services had to divert non-critical emergencies, and some ambulances were diverted. By 2016, thousands of computers in 42 separate NHS trusts in England were reported to be still under Windows XP.
