거제대학교는 교육부가 선정한 조선해양플랜트분야 특성화 대학이며, 세계 제일의 조선해양산업 메카인 거제도에서 산업체와 긴밀한 협조체계를 유지하면서 조선 및 해양플랜트 분야의 공학계열 전문가들을 주로 양성하고 있습니다. 신입생 충원율 100%, 재학생 충원율 130.1%, 공인취업률 85.9%(2013년 공시자료)의 알찬 대학입니다.

또한 우리 거제대학교는 거제지역 유일한 대학으로서 국가 및 지역사회에서 필요로 하는 우수 인력 공급을 위하여 간호, 사회복지, 유아교육, 비즈니스 외국어, 세무회계 등의 학과도 설치 운영하고 있습니다.

특히 간호학과는 4년제 학사과정으로 운영됨으로써 간호학과를 졸업하는 우리대학 학생들이 전국의 우수한 병원에 더 많이 취업할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있습니다.

2011년 거제대학교는 교육부에서 전국 146개 대학 중 모든 면에서 최고 수준의 7개 대학을 선정하여 세계적 수준의 최우수 대학(WCC, World Class College)으로 발표하는 WCC사업에 선정됨으로써 우리대학의 명성을 전국에 널리 알렸습니다.
