জীবনানন্দ দাশ এই কাব্যটি কবি প্রেমেন্দ্র মিত্র ও সঞ্জয় ভট্টাচার্যকে উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন। ‘রয়াল’ আকারের ৪৮ পৃষ্ঠার গ্রন্থটির জন্য জীবনানন্দ দাশ ৩৫টি কবিতা বাছাই করিয়াছিলেন। পরবর্তীকালে অন্যান্য প্রকাশক ও সম্পাদক এ কাব্যগ্রন্থে নতুন কবিতা সংযোজন করেছেন। কবির মৃত্যুর পর ১৯৭০ খ্রিস্টাব্দে কলকাতার সিগনেট প্রেস কর্তৃক প্রকাশিত মহাপৃথিবী’র সংস্করণে কবিতার সংখ্যা ৩৯। আরো উল্লেখ্য যে, এ সংস্করণ থেকে বনলতা সেন-এর ১২টি কবিতা বাদ দেয়া হয়েছে।

জীবনানন্দ দাশ এই কাব্যটি কবি কবি প্রেমেন্দ্র মিত্র ও সঞ্জয় ভট্টাচার্যকে উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন। ২৪ বৎসরের ব্যবধানে ১৯৭০-এ প্রকাশিত সিগনেট সংস্করণে দেখা যায় উৎসর্গ পত্রে পরিবর্তন সাধিত হয়েছে। সিগনেটের কর্তৃপক্ষ লিখেদিয়েছিলেন: “শ্রীমতী মঞ্জুশ্রীকে -- বাবার আশীর্বাদ”। মঞ্জুশ্রী জীবনানন্দ দাশের কন্যা। পিতা তাকে আশীর্বাদস্বরূপ একটি গ্রন্থ উৎসর্গ করতেই পারেন। তবে স্মরণযোগ্য ১৯৫৪-তেই বাবা’র প্রয়াণ হয়েছিল। কবির মৃত্যুর চৌদ্দো বৎসর পরে সিগনেট প্রেস ‘মহাপৃথিবী’র ২য় সংস্করণ প্রকাশ করে।
