About SkySafari 4 Pro Astronomy

***SkySafari has been upgraded! For more information on the NEW SkySafari 5 Pro for Android, visit SkySafariAstronomy.com or search for SkySafari 5 Pro on Google Play!***

SkySafari 4 Pro has the largest database of any astronomy app, period. It adds over 1.2 GB of data to SkySafari 4 Plus, including 25 million stars from both Hubble Guide Star catalogs, over 740,000 galaxies down to 18th magnitude, and over 630,000 solar system objects - including every comet and asteroid ever discovered. It simulates the view from anywhere in the solar system - or beyond - up to a million years in the past or future.

SkySafari 4 Pro includes NASA's latest Moon and Mars maps, with 8x the resolution of any other SkySafari version. It's an astronomical encyclopedia, with over 1500 encyclopedic descriptions of the constellations, stars, and planets written by professionals. It includes 800 images from NASA space missions, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the world's foremost astro-photographers - now in breathtaking high definition on your Android tablet!

All this is built into SkySafari 4 Pro - no need for internet connection. SkySafari 4 Pro will revolutionize your astronomical viewing experience, and replace desktop astronomy software costing ten times more. If you're serious about astronomy, it's a deal you can't afford to miss.

Pro makes the most powerful planetarium that fits in your pocket. It puts millions of stars and all the planets at your fingertips. It lets you find objects in the sky using your Android device's built-in compass and accelerometer. It contains encyclopedic descriptions of the constellations, stars and planets. Use the interactive star chart from anywhere on the globe! No need to walk away from the city lights - the star chart shows you all of the stars and planets at their exact spots.

Here's what's new in version 4:

* Complete rewrite of compass code for smoother and more accurate motion tracking.
* Google Maps integration: choose your location from a built-in Maps view.
* Animated meteor showers, with complete viewing information and spectacular graphics.
* New horizon panoramas: Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San Francisco, Uluru (Ayers Rock) Australia, and the top of Mauna Kea on Hawaii's Big Island. Or add your own!
* New and updated descriptions for hundreds of objects.
* Completely reinvented scope control panel. Up/Down/Left/Right controls only appear when the scope is connected, and big enough to be useable.
* Objects lists under Search are now sortable by name, number, magnitude, RA, Dec, and many other properties.
* New Advanced Search options let you find objects using properties other than their name. For example, you can find all objects of a certain type, within a certain constellation, brighter than a certain magnitude, etc.
* New Advanced Time settings let you enter a date & time thousands of years in the past or future, to the nearest second, or using Julian dates
* New Telescope Equipment settings let you enter a list of all your telescope equipment. Select different combinations of eyepieces and telescopes to display field-of-view automatically. Set up a separate camera and auto-guider FOV. All FOV indicators can be labelled in the sky chart.
* Now log observations of objects directly from the Object Info view, or show all your observations of any object at once.
* New Variable Stars list, containing the brightest and best-known variables in the sky.
* Added descriptions for hundreds of small moons, asteroids, comets, satellites; and many images.
* All full screen images in Object Info now include hi-res versions for the iPad.
* Database now contains Guide Star Catalog 2.x stars to magnitude 15 - total 25 million (up from 15 million in SkySafari 3 Pro).
* Database now includes the complete General Catalog of Variable Stars and Washington Double Star catalogs.
* Dozens more tweaks, bug fixes, and additions we don't have room to list here!

I have the apple app on my iPad and it works great but when I bought it for my Galaxy S7 edge it is useless. If I click in settings the app shuts down, also it is too glitchy to use in compass mode. It's stuck at the observatory landscape and the Nebulas I need to see are behind the landscape art but I can't change it.

Z70%
by Z####:

Latest version being charged again for upgrade. For some additional features and bug fixes, I would ask the developers to reconsider their decision to charge users for upgrade from V4 to V5 of the app. The app is expensive and a paid user should not be paying again for an upgrade. The least the developers could do is to charge a nominal upgrade fee

Y70%
by Y####:

Upgraded to new Samsung S8+ and now app doesn't want to run properly. Every time I select SETTINGS the app closes. Reinstalled but no change. I can't adjust appearance how I want. Used to Love this but now it doesn't work right and I can't afford upgrade to vers. 5 on disability income

Celestron evolution control not supported by Samsung galaxy tab4. It will cause wild slews and freezing. Letting you guys know since the support staff was no help at all even after I paid $40. Works well with ASUS S 8... Two stars for bad service.

Nice software for the professional and the amateur alike, if it only would work. It hangs frequently and does not work at all with Android 6.0 and higher. Count yourself lucky if you have an old tablet with maximum Android 5.0 or below operation system. The software is a pain, the graphic design is very good, if it only would be stabil.

Crashes often on the Samsung 7 don,t bother sent countless reports no replies, left wondering why i paid for the pro version.... sad as it looks great and when it does work it's a nice app, support is a real issue when something goes wrong.

Paid $40 for this app now it crashes on edge 7 everytime i go to settings so i uninstalled it definitely wont pay another $40 for sky safari 5 $40 for a upgrade on the same app ridiculous

I can't afford to upgrade to SS5Pro, I hope this app isn't going to die for lack of support and object updates? This is my main astronomy app and I use it all the time!

Z70%
by Z####:

Short lifespan. Minimalist support. 0/10 would not buy again.

Actually I was wondering a software like this to help me in the field. I had a great difficulty in identifying the objects in the field and did lot of mental gymnastics to get a proper orientation. This is the ultimate solution for that and now I have efficient observing time behind the eyepiece. Previously I had to read the every target from a book but now at the same time of observations I am fully aware of the targets. It has a dead accurate pointing accuracy and you will never missed the target. There are many more functions with it to charm you. In short this is the ideal field companion that every observer should accompany with them. I highly recommend. ....!

There is this annoying thing: you cannot view sky week events without gps enabled. It shows that stupid message about no gps and resets to some default location which hides the selected sky week event. Also very rare updates for its price.

E70%
by E####:

I've had this app for a while and had no issues, but recently since the update, my compass switches on automatically. It's really annoying cause I can't look at anything randomly without the compass trying to find my position and change my map. Please fix.

Incredibly comprehensive yet easy to use. Wether you're hunting faint galaxies in the field or doing armchair astronomy, there is no better app. Can I give it 6 stars?

U70%

Amazing database of information. Don't bother messing around with other wannabe apps of this sort, absolutely nothing else will come close. This is THE one and only Astronomy app you'll ever need. Many thanx to the devs from a very happy star gazer.

No longer working on my Acer Iconia 10 tablet with Android 5.1. Very disappointed. Stellarium Mobile however works fine so that'll now be my best option.

Z70%
by Z####:

I highly recommend this app. I use it quite alot during observing sessions at my scope, as well as for running interesting simulations. This app blows away all other planetarium apps, especially ones like Google Sky map, which is good enough for a beginner, but totally sucks for experienced observers like myself. To anyone who. complains about the app, snap out of it, and take the time to learn it before shooting off your mouth, and making snap judgements about it. I would give it ten stars if I could.

Z70%
by Z####:

The app is beautiful with a humongous database of objects, but occasionally, the app lags when controlling my Celestron Evo scope and buttons stay in pressed state, after I've released the button, leading to a run away scope! Scary situation if I'm nearing zenith and don't have scope mounted far enough forward on the dovetail, risking damaging my diagonal/eyepiece/scope if the eyepiece doesn't clear the base at zenith. This usually ends up in having to quickly power off the scope before impact. EDIT: 7 months later, App STILL lags as no updates yet to FIX this problem!

This app is a game changer. After 30 yrs of observing this now allows you to star hop to 15 mag. galaxies without using huge charts in the dark. The advanced search is really handy for fine tuning target object lists for your location & sky conditions. Don't leave Earth without it!

I know this is an expensive scope , but this has and does everything you would want and hope for from a scope . you will not be disappointed in any way and this is well worth the money . I did get the less expensive one which is great for the beginner and you won't go wrong even with that one and once you learn how to use it then go for this one . The entire universe in your pocket . The functions all work perfect , and no problems with any thing . once you learn how to use the settings you will love this .

Q70%
by Q####:

5 stars!! And a very important feature is the INFO button which gives an object's complete DNA and the DESCRIPTION button within INFO which gives a Wikipedia-like article written by a qualified astronomer. A good example are the Gallelian moons whose individual multiple pages present a great example of comparison/contrast for those 4 moons.

Worked fine on my Samsung note 2 phone but now have the new Samsung Galaxy s7 edge. It now crashes when I go into settings. Any idea? Really need to get this working as I use it in star parties thx

Wish mag settings would stay the same in both zoom and widefield. Otherwise it's great, glad I spent the extra for Pro version.

U70%
by U####:

Very pretty and contains a LOT of data, which is fantastic however it's also an expensive piece of software for android and I feel that there are a number of things which need improving THIS VERSION especially if the developers hope to charge the same price again for the next version: The search functionality is poor in terms of returning all items containing the search string; selection of objects within nebula perimeters is very irksome; some descriptions I'd expect aren't present and many contain errors.

Q70%
by Q####:

Shame on you developers for charging another £30 for this, I already had the previous skysafari pro, and to state these minimal upgrades in development terms required a new version/£30 is an absolute joke.

Q70%
by Q####:

Their are several other planetarium apps I use and enjoy but overall SS4 Pro is the best in breed. That doesn't mean you don't want more especially if you're an advanced amateur but if you need just one this it.

Q70%
by Q####:

As a keen amateur astronomer of +30 years, all I can say is: THIS IS IT! No other app's offering is as comprehensive as SkySafari Pro's (or the Plus version, for that matter), as said competitors' apps either have inadequate interfaces or paltry star catalogues. This alone deems the money invested on SSP, quite possibly the only one you'll have to spend on this kind of app for years to come! If there's only one nag, is that Skyportal, a free app created by the same developers in conjunction with Celestron, offers nice voice-over reads of loads of objects' descriptions - SkySafari unfortunately does not. But that's no biggy, really! Other than that, I think the developers should carry on on encouraging/facilitating the owners of versions previous to 5 (specially us Android users who, for the time being, don't have the choice of this latest version) to create communities built around sharing observing lists - where they could easily e-mail/download lists created by other users, as these are a pain in the neck to create manually. With that in mind, why did you phase out your excellent Yahoo! group?

Waited for the pro version to go half price before I decided to get it. I like it but am having a hard time understanding the price as this version doesn't seem to have much more then the plus version. Still awesome but don't know what I'm missing.

I been looking for an app like this for a while. Does simulations, controls my telescope. Works on my tablet and phone. Well done. I would recommend this to any hobbyist astronomer. The consolidated database with exceptional visuals is a winner.

Awesome best planetarium software use it all the time on open nights for our astronomy club. Where is sky safari 5? See it online but no upgrade.

Q70%
by Q####:

This is a must have app. It has a huge database and is an absolute encyclopedia of information on objects found in the sky. I find it invaluable in outreach events when I am scrambling on where to find answers to questions asked. The app controls my scopes and will run on my Samsung S5 phone and my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. The cost is very reasonable and the app is often on sale. The developers are very responsive to their user base. Again, this is a must have app!

INCREDIBLE! Full of information on all manner of things within the cosmos, and plenty of user settings you can tweak to your own preference. Best astronomy app I've used ●•

S70%

... tively the best application out there for the task I'm trying to accomplish (IE. Astronomy, and looking for / tracking satellites) You do not need to use your data plan with this software at all. Everything is already bundled with the application. I may have paid a bit more (okay, I mean a LOT more), but again, it's all bundled into this awesome application I just bought and download.

Excellent astronomy app for people with computers or computerized telescopes and just everyday applications. Pro is number one for me, after using Plus for 3 years I'm very happy and glad to have purchase Sky Safari Pro.

Would probably not be possible to also take over the imaging equipment currently run by old-style Win-PC apps!

I've been using this for a few years now, and it has made my observing time so much more organized. The Bluetooth connection is great as well! Looking forward to version 5!

Sky Safari is, hands down, the most comprehensive astronomy application currently available for a mobile device. I own the Android and Kindle versions and I'm considering the Mac version, as well. It's that good!

Q70%
by Q####:

On my Samsung Galaxy S7 it crashes when going to settings. Was OK on my old S5. Auto-reported, so waiting for update.

S70%
by S####:

Why? Paid $40 for the pro version a while ago. Got a new phone. Could not find it in the store, only the new "V4" for another $40. Finally found the original after digging through "my apps" list. No upgrade option that I could find. Weak. Hiding the previous version is the height of sleaze.

Q70%
by Q####:

I've been using SkySafari for a few years. Can't believe I've not reviewed it already. I've had all versions and settled on Pro not just for the features but also because it's worth the money and I wanted to reward the developers. SkySafari beats a lot of the planetarium packages I've used on pc's and paid serious money for over the years. I use the scope control feature over Wi-Fi on my android devices using a Rasberry Pi as a wifi hotspot to control my Skywatcher NEQ6 mount. Works like magic.
