About SkySafari 4: Astronomy & Space

***SkySafari has been upgraded! For more information on the NEW SkySafari 5 for Android, visit SkySafariAstronomy.com or search for SkySafari 5 on Google Play!***

SkySafari 4 is the most comprehensive astronomy app available for Android. It's a powerful planetarium that fits in your pocket. It puts thousands of stars and planets at your fingertips. It lets you find objects in the sky using your Android device's built-in compass and accelerometer. It includes hundreds of astronomical images, and contains encyclopedic descriptions of the constellations, stars and planets. Use the interactive star chart from anywhere on the globe! You don't even need to walk away from the city lights - the star chart shows you all of the stars and planets at their exact spots even if they are difficult for you to see.

If you're new to SkySafari, this is the basic version. It includes everything you need to get started learning the night sky: 120,000 stars; over 200 star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies; all major planets and moons, and dozens of asteroids, comets, and satellites - including the ISS.

Here's what you can do with SkySafari 4:

Simulate the night sky from anywhere on planet Earth, up to 100 years in the past or future. Search for celestial objects, and locate them in the sky using your device's built-in motion hardware. Animate transits, conjunctions, eclipses, and other events with SkySafari's Time controls. Explore the sky with Night Vision turned on, and preserve your eyesight after dark.

Learn the history, mythology, and science of the heavens from SkySafari's hundreds of object descriptions. Browse hundreds of astronomical photographs and NASA spacecraft images. Stay up-to-date with SkyWeek, Sky & Telescope's mobile portal to all major sky events for every day of the week. Miss nothing!

All this is built into SkySafari 4 - you don't need an internet connection to use it. SkySafari's streamlined interface turns your Android device into a celestial travel guide! SkySafari 4 Plus and Pro add even more - but the basic version is everything the casual stargazer will ever want. (Please note: there is no discount upgrade path to SkySafari 4 Plus or Pro.)

If you've used SkySafari before, here's what's new in version 4:

* Reinvented look-and-feel with new app icons and artwork.
* Complete rewrite of compass code for much smoother and more accurate motion tracking. With compass on, search for any object, and an animated arrow now leads the way to help you locate it in the sky.
* Google Maps integration: choose your location from a built-in Maps view.
* Animated meteor showers, with complete viewing information and spectacular graphics.
* New horizon panoramas: Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San Francisco, Uluru (Ayers Rock) Australia, and the top of Mauna Kea on Hawaii's Big Island. Or add your own!
* New and updated descriptions for hundreds of objects.
* Dozens more tweaks, bug fixes, and additions we don't have room to list here!

What are users saying about SkySafari 4: Astronomy & Space

by Z####:

I do enjoy SkySafari it is a good act and I enjoyed its informative and easy-to-use nature. However there are a few other astronomy apps that you can download for free which work just as good if not better. With that said, I only have noticed that this app seems to crash when I'm using the Google text to speech app with it on my Samsung S7 Note

Z70%
by Z####:

A very useful app for amateur astronomers. The sky week function is also need. Sometimes it will crash if you switch between applications.

Z70%
by Z####:

Had high hopes for this app to do some astrophography, but the compass jumps all over the place & live sky locations are not accurate. Calibrating the compass helps only slightly & then the behavior gets erratic again. Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

by Z####:

a step above the others. showing the mmon and planets makes this really useful. can't see the point of the ones without these features.

E70%
by E####:

It is a blast! You can track the whole mission and see the amazing pictures.

R70%
by R####:

Keeps crashing trying to access settings and thinks every object I'm trying to read info on is the Sun. Better apps out there.

Z70%
by Z####:

Very detailed data base. Better than most sky map apps that's for shur. The graphics are too computer generated though.

Z70%
by Z####:

App keeps closing when trying to get into settings so I can't change my settings to what I want

Y70%
by Y####:

Crashes every time I press settings.

E70%
by E####:

My favorite feature of Sky Safari was the live planetarium pointing. I could hold it to the sky and it would identify the stars , turn around, and it would identify that portion of the sky. That's not true in version 4. A shame, because it's perfect otherwise.

Q70%
by Q####:

A basic (no telescope control), easy to use astronomy app. Much better than apps that cost more. Layout is user friendly and settings easy to find.

R70%
by R####:

I'm no Astronomer, but this app is just fun. I start it, look up at the planets and stars and there they are, just like the app suggests. Way more info than I need but a great app to learn with. Very much enjoy it

K70%
by K####:

Though when you zoom in really far on an object there is a bit of wobble but is overall far more accurate than any free star chart. I can see any objects I want to see (stars, planets, sattelites) and take out what I don't want to see. There are lots of settings to customize it the way you want to see the sky.

Q70%
by Q####:

Does everything I hoped it would. Compass can be a bit wonky but I'm sure the electromagnetic interference not any fault of the app. Much better away from buildings and so on.

Q70%
by Q####:

Takes some time to get the hang of, but then is very useful. We are beginners so it helped to turn off many of the objects in settings so that the display was simpler. It's a great app for knowing where the planets are at any time.

L70%
by L####:

Its compass comes to work by itself. It is sometimes frustrating.

Z70%
by Z####:

Wobbles and shakes all the while ,and out of sync with the night sky.

Q70%
by Q####:

I've been using this for some time now and find that no other app comes close. Great for stargazing or just for exploring the night sky. I will certainly be upgrading to the plus version!

Q70%
by Q####:

I chose this app based on previous reviews and so far I have been very pleased. As a casual observer it has everything I wanted and more. All I need now is a cloudless sky!

P70%
by P####:

Great planetarium application. Works perfectly with note 5. Take it out with a pair of 15x70 celestron sky master binoculars for casual observing.

F70%
by F####:

It is a blast! You can track the whole mission and see the amazing pictures.

Covers everything from our solar system to deep space!

I just don't like it as much as Stellarium. It doesn't open at the current time, which is really frustrating. Limited options/settings.
