About Pluto Safari: New Horizons

Pluto Safari is your interactive guide to the first mission to Pluto, the last unexplored planet. It's a free app from the developers of SkySafari 4, the next-generation award-winning astronomy app designed for Android and a 2014 Sky & Telescope Hot Product!

Follow the NASA New Horizons spacecraft on its historic mission to explore the mysterious icy worlds at the edge of our solar system. New Horizons flew by Pluto and Charon on July 14, 2015. It is now venturing even further out and will attempt to visit one or more objects in the Kuiper Belt region beyond Neptune.

Here is what you can do with Pluto Safari:

Mission Timer: Track when New Horizons will reach Pluto - down to the second - with the Closest Approach to Pluto countdown clock. The distance to Pluto in miles is also displayed.

Location: Provides interactive views on the latest position of New Horizons and Pluto. Get a bird’s-eye view of our Solar System as New Horizons approaches Pluto and then goes beyond. Rotate around a detailed 3D model of the New Horizons spacecraft, explore the Pluto system and its moons. Find Pluto in the sky from your home location, or even fly through some of the objects in the Kuiper Belt.

Timeline: Explore detailed New Horizons mission event dates and view select milestones in the interactive solar system simulator.

Guide: A multimedia guide to Pluto, its discovery, the first mission to explore it, and the controversy generated by its demotion to dwarf planet status.

News: Updated information on the latest mission news, data, and discoveries.

Poll: Do you agree with the IAU’s decision in 2006 to reclassify Pluto as a "dwarf planet"? Read both sides of the argument, and then have your say in this ongoing debate!

Pluto Safari is developed by the makers of SkySafari 4, an award-winning astronomy app that simulates the night sky from anywhere on planet Earth. Follow eclipses, occultations, and transits in Earth's sky - and beyond! Move up to SkySafari 4 Plus or Pro and view the planets and their moons as only NASA space probes have - even label every crater on them. SkySafari 4 Plus or Pro even adds wired or wireless control for Celestron, Meade, Orion, SkyWatcher, and many other computerized telescopes.

Change up the stuff like probe position"NOW"in relation to the mission for example, what is the next object to be viewed? That is a good bit of something to tell us commoners.Give us real people something to raise us from miry ignorance, pique curiosity and watch the masses popular opinion sway congress to fund more stuff......

Update: Now freezes and won't go to the posts at all. Please lose the blinding white flash of blank screen when transitioning between pages. It is very jarring and hurts my eyes after a dark app. Otherwise this is fantastic on my S4 Mini.

I love this app, but it does not take into account that the entire Pluto system (including Pluto) orbits a gravitational barycenter outside of Pluto's body. I hope this is updated since that is one of the most interesting features of the system and users unaware of this fact would be missing out.

Awesome to have notification of all the latest from a great space mission! One of the few apps I let Spawn notifications. Doesn't spam either.

Great interactive feature of orbits of all planets in its "location" feature. However, this feature has a broken function: its keypad to control the number of months, days, or years elapsing does not work. Otherwise awesome!

I70%

I just like listening to the music while playing with the app! I like the various viewpoints, daily updates with the notification. It's got the simulation to play with, the updated information and news you need, and it's nice to have the vote for Pluto's status.

Now we have some actual pictures of Pluto it would be nice to see them on the Pluto model, even if missing areas are filled in with false textures.

Wonderful app! Great simulations and also history leading up to the event. Considering NASA said they'd be receiving Pluto system pictures for the next 18 months from the New Horizons space, there is plenty to look forward too. You can tell the love that has gone into making this project.

Looks like an historic event. Thanks for the opportunity to get this as I was doing 3 degrees from BSC, astrophysics, then astronomy, but have 3 new degrees (kids). Lol

In the new horizons view the spacecraft is pointing the wrong way. The high gain antenna should be pointing towards the earth.

The images and news are wonderful. The app itself is now-intuitive though and is also sending me a ton of push notifications, some when there is nothing new. This wouldn't be too bad, but there is apparently no way to turn them off as there is no settings page. Must uninstall to get them to stop.

Thank you app of the day. I would never have known of this app or the people who made it. I'll look forward to more apps from S.C.C. as they become available...big hugs

Fantastic app! Looking forward to 16 more months of images appearing here. With that said, could you please add a feature where we can tap and hold on an image and download it to our device? That way, we can view them offline, zoom in, explore, and dream. Thanks.

I still love this app even though the mission is "over". I love getting news feeds with newest pictures & descriptions. But, I really wish you could zoom in on the pictures for greater detail. I wind up having to go elsewhere for this function.

Thanks Simulation Curriculum, as with all your other great apps that I've downloaded it is excellent! :-)
