The app overall works as expected, with current features. The TV guide is great. However it lacks with its GUI, and development frameworks. The first is current button size for touch interfaces creates high button press failure rates. This could be resolved by creating larger buttons suited for finger presses creating a more natural button layout. The second is the lack of casting framework, to allow the ability to cast to a chrome cast device. This also can be resolved by adding the framework to its code.
Operates well on the Nexus Player running Android M. Picture is consistently high quality, even in HD. Built in UI (Program Guide) is user friendly and easy on the eyes. Biggest deficiency is motion stutter caused by high rate of frame drops. This is most noticeable during live action sports and when reading scrolling text "tickers", frequently used by news and sports channels. Hopefully this will be addressed in the next update.
I have tried the HDhomerun twice now; once back in 2012 and then I gave it another shot a few weeks ago thinking that the updates to the app would make work properly but I was wrong. I wanted to replace my Cable boxes with this and a cable card but the channels freeze all the time. I replaced this with a TiVo Bolt and three TiVo mini boxes and they work just like cables boxes but with a lot better features. So now I only pay about $12.50 for all the boxes in the house including DVR functions.
So far so good, i have my nvidia shield in an upstairs bedroom on a 5ghz network while the router and hdhomerun prime and i installed the app and it immediately opened and allows me to use the remote to flip through channels. Its working well so far. I'll update if anything changes.
I have this working on my Nvidia shield, and while the image isn't as good as when you use Windows Media Center for watching your shows. I think this is still pretty good. The biggest thing I'm happy with is that it lets you watch drm channels. I like the idea of having the Nvidia shield running instead of having my power hungry HTPC at all times.
Not very usable on a Nexus Player. As mentioned before, it has stutter issues so tickers on ESPN and NFL Network are hard on the eyes. I thought it was the Nexus Player, but I installed the HDHomeRun add-on into Kodi on the Nexus Player, and it's silky smooth even on HD. Only issue is the add-on won't play DRM channels while the VIEW app does. Please update the app, obviously something isn't calibrated correctly since new firmwares have been released.
This app is primitive and worse doesn't function properly. Where to begn. The picture is blocky and choppy on Android tablets and phones. The channel guide is primate with no ability to make a favorites list. Ability to changes settings s all but hidden. No support for Amazon Fire Tv either. Their codecs need overhauled. All this when using Kodi to access the same content has a beautiful picture. The sad thing is Silicondust could sell a million of these things if they just fixed thier app.
Visual part is OK so far, but no audio. Installed it on multiple devices, but apart from some hardware decoder errors (continuing in software mode) the only thing that works is the video display, including channel info. When this is fixed it will be the easiest playback tool in house. Now I have to use more complicated dlna apps.
this could be a cord cutters dream if it worked consistently. silicon dust, get better developers. itsputters and sometimes fails with hardware playback errors. tsk tsk. Edit: The app is just bad. It crashes constantly on my android phone and set top boxes.
Only getting PCM when it should be DD. i knew i shouldn't have to pay for software to get new hardware to work. Why does someone need to buy hardware and then pay for the software to get it to work? Crazy days we live in. Then bonus... PCM. :|
Use the latest version on Nexus 5. SD channels are fine, while HD channels are spotty. Thought that two years old Nexus 5 is not fast enough. Today, I received Nexus 6P,playing of HD channels still spotty. What a surprise! However, both VLC and MX player play HD channels quite smoothly on Nexus 6P.
This app is currently not able to output audio via my HDMI or S/PDIF device! (*Note: Other apps on this system are able to output sound via HDMI and S/PDIF.) Rockchip RK3368, Android 5.1.1
Works but needs lots of improving it for the end user. I've seen stuttering where the original TV hookup keeps playing. 1 stop while the show played none stop on the straight hook up.
Nice app I use on multiple devices. But the stream is always stuttering every 5 seconds. I also have Plex and get a smooth stream. However, Plex image is noticeably compressed, while HDHR image is crystal clear so I assume Plex's compression allows 4 smoother streaming. How can I have both? I have Wireless AC with 866Mbps device connection. Unfortunately, I find myself going back to Plex as the stuttering is too distracting.
I cut the cord with the cable companies some time ago.I upgraded my Media Center and added an android box for the bedroom. I was using the old dual tuner. It would not work with the new software, so I opened a support ticket. Silicondust quickly responded telling me that the old tuner would not work in my configuration. But.... they offered me an incredible price on an RMA trade-in for a new Extend. New tuner came, plugged it in...life is good..... A cautionary tale for those who are new to Over-the-Air broadcasting.... Your experience is only as good as the broadcast signal you get from the network. HDHomerun has some great tools to help you determine how strong the signal is. It will also help point the antenna in the right direction. Remember if you use an amplifier, you can overpower the signal. The answer might be to amp it down a little. Before you come to the conclusion that the software doesn't work or the tuner doesn't work make sure you have a strong signal. Silicondust saves me over a thousand dollars a year and the uncompressed HD image is better than cable.... that's not a bad thing...
I figured I'd try this app on my LG smartphone after I recently bought my HDHomeRun EXTEND device. I just ordered a Zidoo X6 Pro Android streaming box and I'm going to use it on that, too. For those who are interested, I side-loaded this Android app to my first generation Amazon Fire Stick and it works perfectly which I would consider a bonus. Amazon's app store doesn't recognize the Fire Stick as a downloadable device for HDHomeRun View. I only wanted to see if it worked natively on the Fire Stick. I had already installed HDHomeRun View plug-in for free in side-loaded Kodi 15.2 on my Fire Stick and that also worked perfectly, so I figured a side-loaded Android HDHomeRun would work and it did. The standard Fire Stick remote works fine using any of the 3 bottom buttons to bring up the channel change menu and then scrolling and clicking with the up/down/click circular ring. The Amazon Fire Stick can do so much with side-loaded Android apps so don't leave it lying around unused if you have one.
Silicon Dust has been making great hardware for some time. However, in all this time they have never been able to develop a reliable app or user interface. If you have other software that can interface with their devices or have coding skills, their hardware is good. If you're looking to use this app (or their other apps) to seamlessly watch TV, it probably won't happen.
So I downloaded this app on my nexus player and when I try to open it. It tells me to check my connections. Am not sure what's going on but I paid for this app and I don't know how to get it working. But all reviews are really bad, I wish I looked at them before purchasing this app.
I bought a new HDHomeRun Extend, and this app works for watching live TV on my phone. I would give the app 5 stars, but the app crashes on my Nexus Player. I have it connected to a TV, so using the app for live TV on my TV is silly, but I would like to get a projector, and I hope the app works with Android TV by then.
This application worked well until the last update. Opens fine but crashes when trying to view some content with the app or through live channels. Still able to view contain with the Kodi HDHomeRun plugin. Using the Developers Preview M image. Edit: The latest update fixed the issues.
I recently purchased a samsung galaxy tab 2 S 32GB. Prior to this I have had a HDHomeRun EXTEND, a two tuner one antenna box with a glowing HD on the front of it. I use HDHomeRun view and setup. Setup is really nice. Real time SS/quality signal's let you point that antenna exactly where you want it for your weakest channel(s), you can monitor this on your tablet on the roof over your wireless lan as you fine adjust your antenna. HDHomeRun View is ok. I have it installed on all my lan computers and now as well on my android device. I use it sometimes on my computers but next to windows media center, and it's tv guide, HDHomeRun View is pretty much the last choice. The main drawback to HDHomeRun is it has no tv guide. You can see what is NEXT to air on any channel by tapping the screen (brings up a scroll listing of ever channel you receive with a picture of what is playing and text of what is next. Media center gives you two weeks of listings. Sometimes i open media center.. find what to watch .. then watch it on HDHomeRun. Not an option if your on an android without a media center pc lying around. I stream uncompressed video to anywhere/device in the house.
--- FOR ANYONE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THEIR ANDROID DEVICE NOT DETECTING THEIR TUNER --- Turn off Data Saver feature in Chome. That instantly fixed it for me. Great app now that its working.
runs great on my phone but not so great on my tablet... which just makes me think the problem is with the tablet and not the app. unfortunate but not your fault obviously... edit: no update since June 2015.. gotta be some things that could be improved
No EPG for New Zealand. Buggy. UI is awful. No response whatsoever on the forums, no response here and no updates. Aurora TV provides a better experience and the developer actually listens to his customers.
Much easier to navigate channels then using the TV upnp interface. But the playback is choppy. I'm using OTA and the playback on the Shield is choppy compared to when I watch channels on the TV. This should be fixed. For the record, I'm on a 5GHz wifi so bandwidth shouldn't be an issue; especially when the TV has smooth playback.
Mostly no sound when watching TV with this app. Awful interface. No ability to record TV. Avoid at all costs if you want to retain your sanity. I have already begun the return process on this HDHomeRun piece of "hardware".
As it stands now, the app is mostly just for show: hd channels don't work and it's user interface is almost nonexistant. But the update coming soon will hopefully fix this.
I've had the hdr prime for a few years. Without wmc, it was useless for dry channels. This app allows dry channel viewing. The navigation isn't great
Why can't I listen to the Dolby digital 5.1 stream? Why does this app suffer from jittery playback on nexus player while kodi add-on has smooth playback? This app doesn't even work most of the time. I hate you
This application worked well until the last update. Opens fine but crashes when trying to view some contain with the app or through live channels. Still able to view contain with the Kodi HDHomeRun plugin. Using the Developers Preview M image. Edit: The latest update fixed the issues.
Waste if .99 lol pos
I've got 3 android devices but it only works on 2...?
docent work, really please test
Love it, can't wait for DVR functionality in this app
Great
Needs Chromecast support
Rarely plays
With updated firmware and apps the experience keeps getting more reliable.
Initially it crashed on my two Nexus 7's. I decided to upgrade one of them to android 5.1.1 and now it works just fine. Was initially disappointed when it stopped working after I did the firmware upgrade but so far it is fully functional. Edit: Just updated my second Nexus 7 to 5.1.1 and installed this app and it works without any issues.

I have a Nexus Player and ADT-1, connected to a HDHR4-2DT using both the HDHomeRun View and Live Channels apps, and I'm based in the UK. I can receive channels on both apps, but I only get video and not audio. I can only get audio if I turn off MPEG-2 HW Decoding in the settings of the View app (something I can't do in the Live Channels app) - but if I do this, I can't receive any HD channels. Can you please update the apps/firmware to sort this issue out.
