সংস্কৃত শব্দ véda " জ্ঞান" মূল বে- থেকে উৎপত্তি নির্ণয় করা হল " জানতে "। এটি চার বিধিসম্মত বেদের সঙ্গে সহযোগী (ঋগ্বেদ, যজু বেদ, সাম বেদ ও অথর্ব বেদ) যদিও তথ্যসূত্র অনুযায়ী এটি যুক্ত ছিলো ব্রাহ্মন, আর্য এবং উপনিষদের সাথে। বেদের এক নাম শ্রুতি। এর কারণ, লিপিবদ্ধ হওয়ার আগে দীর্ঘকাল বেদ ছিল মানুষের স্মৃতিতে বিধৃত

গুরুশিষ্য পরম্পরায় শ্রুতি অর্থাৎ শ্রবণ প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে বেদ আয়ত্ত করা হতো। যেহেতু শোনা বা শ্রুতির মাধ্যমে প্রক্রিয়াটি ঘটত তাই এ থেকে বেদের এক নাম হয় শ্রুতি। বেদকে ত্রয়ীও বলা হয়।

এর কারণ, বেদের মন্ত্রগুলি আগে ছিল বিক্ষিপ্ত অবস্থায়। ব্যাসদেব যজ্ঞে ব্যবহারের সুবিধার্থে মন্ত্রগুলিকে ঋক্, যজুঃ, সাম এই তিন খণ্ডে বিন্যস্ত করেন। তাই বেদের অপর নাম হয় সংহিতা। বেদ চারখানা হলেও চতুর্থ অথর্ববেদ অনেক পরবর্তীকালের রচনা এবং এর কিছু কিছু মন্ত্র প্রথম তিনটি থেকেই নেওয়া হয়েছে। তাছাড়া যজ্ঞে এর ব্যবহার নেই।

অবশ্য বেদকে ত্রয়ী বলার অন্য একটি কারণও আছে এবং তা হলো: এর মন্ত্রগুলি মিতত্ব, অমিতত্ব ও স্বরত্ব এই তিনটি স্বরলক্ষণ দ্বারা বিশেষায়িত, যার ওপর ভিত্তি করে মন্ত্রগুলিকে উপর্যুক্ত তিনটি ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়েছে।বেদের রচনাকাল সম্পর্কে অনেক মতভেদ আছে।

এ নিয়ে প্রাচ্য ও পাশ্চাত্য পণ্ডিতদের মধ্যে বিস্তর মতপার্থক্যও দেখা যায়। উল্লেখ্য যে, বেদ রচনার শুরু থেকে তা সম্পূর্ণ হতে বহুকাল সময় লেগেছে। সেই কালসীমা মোটামুটিভাবে খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব ২৫০০-৯৫০ অব্দ পর্যন্ত ধরা হয়।
