Of course materials are used on the such things as chairs and couches, (and there you get an enormous choice of colours / textures), but you must make sure your woods match up. You don't want a room with 5 different types of wood scattered around, unless you are going for that 'picked it up as I went along / not planned' style! One of the keys to furnishing a living room in style is the comfort of your furniture. Uncomfortable furniture may look great, but it does not invite family and friends to relax and enjoy the setting.

While this may be the third consideration on the list when buying your living room furniture, it is no less important. People like to relax on furniture nowadays and not sit straight backed as if in a Victorian sitting room. The harder it is to get out of the chair, the more comfy it is (of course not physically harder, that would imply a very deep seat!)
