После чудесного спасения из плена Григорий находит остатки своей дивизии и после скоротечного боя на берегу Дона выходит из окружения. Однако сразу попадает в штрафную роту и первым встречает подошедшего к Сталинграду врага. Его младший сын Пётр тоже воюет с гитлеровцами на Кавказе. После ранения он попадает в госпиталь, где работает Юля Коновалова и она узнаёт в нём сына Григория. Александра Шелехова провинилась на принудительных работах в Германии и отправлена в концлагерь. Она чудом выживает этот аду. После подвига в штрафной роте Григорий возвращается в 33-ю гвардейскую дивизию, но после кровопролитных боёв её отводят из пылающего города.
