Starting Strength Official for Android
Gets the job done. Crashes sometimes and has some random occasional bugs. Perfect for those trying to follow Mark's training program.
Overall this app is good. It simplifies things so you can just focus on getting the lifts right. Timers are a little glitchy.
Very useful for keeping track of your workouts and progress. The warmup sets are already figured out for each workout as well. Also has great reference videos for the exercises and even tells you what plates to load on the bar. This app couldn't make working out any easier, everything you need to be your own coach.
Great app for a great program. I began seriously training using another popular, similar, program but found myself stalling and on a few occasions injuring myself, causing me to stop for weeks to recover. Once I switched to Starting Strength I noticed a difference almost immediately. I quickly surpassed my previous maxes in a matter of a couple weeks. The only downside to this is that I now have to buy more plates because I just pulled everything I have. The app is simple and easy to use. Well worth the few bucks for the log book and progression charts along with quick access to the book and plenty of other little goodies. My only qualm is that you can't specify the number of each weight plate that you have for the plate calculator. (IE 1 set of 45s, 35s, etc, etc) I find myself just not using the plate calculator and adding it up myself even though it usually takes me a few rounds of adding to double check my math. No one wants to have to take their focus away from the set they are setting up for to do math. Overall it is a fantastic app that is simple and to the point and that's what makes it great. What really sold me on it was the plate calculator, so I was a bit disappointed when I realized it just didn't work like I had hoped for. I would gladly give the app 5 stars if this was updated.
All in all a great way to track your progress when doing the starting strength program. It seems that the key things from the book are also covered
This is a great, clean app. The only thing I would love is to be able to add assistance exercises and substitute lifts (like powerclean for rows)
The books are awesome, the app is not. Clunky. Only Novice exercises available. No ability to program. Would have used it just to track workouts if it could have done that. Almost unuseable.
This app gives you excerpts from the book, although it kind of gives the impression that it gives you the whole book. The workout history doesn't load and the app is slow. I wish I'd spent the money on the full book rather than an app that doesn't work for £8.
This has been a great app from the start to track starting strength progress, but with the updates that have been coming it has been amazing. Ive noticed improved auto timers for rest times as well as improved settings and ability to have data stored with an account and recover it in case of loss. I recommend this app to anybody doing this program. 1 edit i would like is the ability to rename exercises and their 3x5 or 5x3 format. I cant train power clean anymore since a wrist injury so now do pendlay row
Easy to use! I really wish it had lat pulls and bb row for swapping in and out with DL for us bigger boys and old farts. I keep a log book as well and I am able to record these other exercises in it. I have watched several videos on the SS website. Lots of the trainers even recognize that most of their clients are "Master" athletes. Or what about creating an entirely separate app for Masters all together.
This got me under the bar in a method that has kept me on track and helped avoid injury. I'm a 47 YO novice and I'll be doing a bodyweight DL (205#) on my next session which will be the 12th since starting. I hurt my back almost 3 yrs ago DL'ing less weight but the SS Program has gotten me strong fast. Just Follow The Program and keep loading plates.
The app is pretty good for actually doing the workouts. I don't like how the timer resets when you go to different tabs. Also I don't find the excerpts from the book helpful and they certainly don't negate the need to have and read the book. The last thing I don't like are the videos. For one, there aren't enough frames to really analyze the movements. Secondly, the super-flexible college-kid lifters don't have enough weight on the bar, especially in the power clean clip. Dude's literally jumping 10 inches off the floor. Show me someone cleaning at least 175 lbs instead of a couple yellow bumper plates.
I'm about to start my 4th week with this and I love it. The app sometimes crashes, especially after I try to open another app. Other than that it's great. I am wondering though if the app tells you when to do power cleans or if it's something you have to figure out yourself?
Lifetime chubby beginner starting in his late 20s here. Following the the programming I've only gained 10 pounds over a month (likely sarcoplasmic weight) and my waist size has dropped two inches. I eat much more and do no cardio. Deadlift has jumped 100lbs! I love this app and wish I knew about it before buying the book, because it has everything you need. It makes determining warmup weights a breeze which is very helpful since I use a home gym. My only critque is that you can't set the number of plates you have for a specific weight, so it constantly asks me to add 2x 10lb weights each side, but I only own 2.
Great program, even for an older guy(47) who never relly did squats or deadlifts. Rip is extremely thorough in explaining the lifts. Started with stronglifts 5x5 app a few years ago which was ok, but after reading starting strength and finding this app, Rippetoe's instruction and rationale blows that program away.
Does exactly what any beginner/intermediate lifter needs. The inclusion of frame by frame summary videos for giving yourself a quick form refresher between sets is genius, and the book alone makes the full price app worth it. Only issue I have had: often submitting a workout is unsuccessful, but pressing the tick multiple times leads to the workout appearing multiple times in history when the app unfreezes.
Great app. I would make it so you can scale the squats (I.e., add 5 every other workout or one a week) when you start stalling but it ain't hard to work around it. Just gone start micro plates earlier
Had to adjust so it didn't keep going up 5 lbs each workout, but really easy to use. Only wish the notes section wouldn't exit out so easily when I make a spelling correction. Feeling good about my progress and glad to have an app specifically for my workout program. Thanks
Great for training, if a little buggy Often crashes on startup and needs a force close. If you're part way through a warm up, checking a video etc resets the warm up, and it would also be nice to see the warm up weights in advance so I can get the plates ready. However, I'm getting a lot stronger so I can forgive all this for more
Fantastic app. Packed full of useful information on the main barbell exercises used within the program. Each exercise is backed up with written chapters from the book to guide you along. I found the in-app form videos great as a reference before I started an exercise. Really looking forward to the scheduled update. This is well worth the money.
App is good but occasionally has bugs. Exercises will sometimes change out on their own. Also app refuses to start roughly 10% of the time. That being said I would still recommend it.
This app very good for the lifting of the weights. The lifting of the weights is made much more convenience of the counting of the tracking. The app helped me lift the dead thing from no dead thing to a 305 pound dead thing. Now moving my uncle from the basement to the trunk of my car is made much easiness.
Hi been loving the app. However the version using takes forever to load. Seems to be stuck at the initial loading screen and freezes my phone. I'm using a Google Pixel XL. Fix please! Thanks
love this app and this program!!! Mark Rippetoe really knows what he is talking about. In one month my squat went up from 185 to 265 with big gains everywhere else. This app also suggest to you when to progress to cleans and chinups. very little guesswork. track your progress, does the math for you for warmup sets... Couldnt be happier with this app. I really how the come out with one for the texas method!!!
The app is great for tracking workouts. I only found out a couple weeks ago that it has warm-up sets built into the app. Hit the arrow next to your work weight to see bar loadouts and warm-up sets.
Nice app. Great for tracking starting strength workouts. It could use some enhancements like adding the "switch exercise" feature for editing past workouts. I seem to forget to click the "complete workout" check mark after a workout. I also do assisted the pull up machine, adding ability to handle negative numbers would be a plus. I recommend the app to friends doing SS. Thanks!
Great app. One thing it could use is an explanation of how to step up weight in warm up sets, can't find that info. That's the only think it's lacking for me, though!
UPDATE: after giving a moderate review of the app I was contacted by a member of the dev team (that same night!) to discuss issues I was having. I tested updates and everything looks great! New features, a more handsome UI and everything running smooth! This is what you want from a paid app! A company that isn't resting on its laurels and is attentive to its user-base to make a useful and functional product! Old review: Let me start by saying I LOVE the starting strength program. Seeing weight increase on the bar every workout when you're starting out is so exciting and an extreme motivating factor to make sure I'm getting into the gym 3 times a week. This app has some great features but it is VERY buggy. Editing workout notes? Cool. Wanna hop back to a different spot of the note? Nope. It minimizes your keyboard. Wanna start it up fresh? Cool. Wanna open it after you had it up yesterday? Nope. It freezes so you gotta force stop it so it can start fresh again. I don't begrudge the $9 since there's a ton of information in the app and an enormous amount of learning resources online. I'm glad to give starting strength the money for how much I've learned but the app has a lot of room for improvement
This is a good app that I would like better with a couple of additions. The warm up portion is great, it flows smoothly from one set to the next with an automatic timer that counts down rest period between each set. Then you get into the work sets which doesn't have the same flow. It would be nice if the work sets functioned just like the warm ups or even better, the app would continue right I to the working set after the last warm up set. Between work sets you have to remember to start the timer and then you have to click ok to stop the alarm. I would prefer a notification similar to a new text.. Besides these few things it's a nice app. I like the simplicity of the warm up sets.
Lots of good info from the book. The program itself is great, Rip is a genius of training for strength. This app is completely sub-par. Timer isn't automatic, it is tiny too. Loses its place on warmup sets. Timer resets if go to different screens during a set. I would really like this program with the Stronglifts5x5 app. That app is the shitza! This one is just lame and frustrating. Regarding developer response on Aug 8. The latest update on the app was on Aug 4, so, no update was made on the claimed date. It is now Aug 10 and still no update. I just checked the app and literally none of my complaints have been fixed.
The best strength training app around. If it's worth having it's worth paying for. Leave the gimmicky nonsense apps and guides behind and embrace the barbell!
Excellent entraînement. La seul chose dommage dans l'application c'est de ne pas avoir d'automatique backup malgré tout EDIT : Thanks a lot, with an automatic cloud save, I will give it 5 star, It was one major problem for me.
Would rate 5, but locks up sometimes after timer when running beyond pod at the same time. Great program though.. Love the simplicity.
It freezes a lot. Other than that it's great. It tells me what/when to lift, I just gotta move the weight.
This is the only app I need at the gym. It gets a little finicky if you open other apps while it's open, but it's great otherwise. I'd like to see the ability to track assistance exercises in a future version, too!
Great app! There are some minor performance issues, bit it is otherwise a really well done app. I look forward to future developments such as the ability to substitute rows for power cleans.
My only issue with the app is sometimes it freezes for me on opening. Great tracker for Starting Strength program, very intuitional and has great background info
Great app that makes starting on this program easy. However the app has some stability issues and regularly fails to start or freezes. That's too bad as it is great otherwise.
Looks pricey, but you get the full book, exercise videos and warm-up and work sets plate setup, automatic progression, and a great progress reporting tool, along with exporting of data and cloud backup. If you are doing the starting strength program you want this app

I love it. The csv export could be easier and chin ups should allow you to enter negative value if you want to start working on your back, but have to use a machine. Other than that, good job. Simple easy app
