About MuniMobile

The official mobile ticketing app from San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency! The MuniMobile app lets you purchase and use fares and passes instantly on your phone—anywhere, anytime. Just download the free app, register your debit/credit card in our secure system, and you're ready to go.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS APP:

• No paper fares to keep track of.

• No need to carry cash, count exact change or find a ticket machine.

• Buy and use fares instantly using a debit/credit card.

• Store multiple tickets on your phone for future use.

• Pay a single fare or multiple fares for a group of riders.

• Register your debit/credit card(s) in our secure system.

• Purchase tickets on your phone or on any computer via our website.

HOW IT WORKS:

1. CHOOSE RIDER TYPE: Adult, Youth, or Senior/Disabled/Medicare

2. CHOOSE FARE: Single Trip Fare for Muni Bus & Rail, Single Ride Fare for Cable Car, or Passport

3. CHOOSE QUANTITY: You can buy multiple tickets to use later

4. CHECK OUT: Pay with Visa, MasterCard, or PayPal

COMMON QUESTIONS:

Q: Do I need to be connected to the Internet?

An Internet connection is required to purchase tickets, but you can use/activate your tickets offline.

Q: What if my battery dies?

Just like with paper tickets, you're responsible for making sure you have a valid fare at all times, so be sure to plan ahead!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

• Don't uninstall the Muni Mobile app or erase your phone without transferring your unused tickets first. Your tickets are stored on your phone (which makes it possible to use them without an Internet connection), so uninstalling the app can permanently erase your tickets!

• Activate your ticket before boarding. If you're at a Train station where fares are required, make sure you activate your ticket (by tapping the "Use" button) before entering the station area. Otherwise, activate your ticket when you see your bus or train approaching. Your ticket must be activated before boarding a vehicle.

• Watch your battery level! Just like with paper tickets, you're responsible for making sure you have a valid fare at all times.

• Create an account before purchasing tickets, as this is the only way you can transfer your unused tickets if you get a new phone. (Note: Only unused tickets can be transferred. Use up any activated tickets before switching phones.)

Terrible app. No map. You can plan a trip but you have to know name of stops.

Purchased a ticket. Clicked on it. Bus driver said it didn't work. Ticket disappeared! Broken app!

Love this app! Great for when you are running late or short on change. Even better when you forgot to pay and the unexpected fare inspector appear...

J70%

1st time i used it to plan a trip, all i got was blank screen.

Q70%
by Q####:

It's not designed to hold information pertinent to high frequency MUNI travelers (i.e. monthly passes).

Keeps crashing and a memory hog. S8

Unless you're buying tickets through this app, all it does is show an ugly, ancient mobile site. Not worth it.

Q70%

Not sure why this app is rated so poorly. It work completely fine and does exactly what I need it to do.

Much simpler than cash or clipper

two incedents already where muni, the slow, unresponsive dinosaur that it is, doesn't know what to do about this app. First I almost got a ticket when the fare inspector thought not enough time had gone by since my purchase, but I only went from Montgomery to Powell, it takes like 45 seconds. I would have got cited but talked my way out. Then when I got a new phone, had downloaded the app, but didn't know I had to create a new account to use the app. Got kicked off on my way to work. Muni sucks

Q70%
by Q####:

In order to create an account you need to provide your phone number which I don't understand why that's needed. The Interfaces is really bad and the bus schedule looks like it was never designed or finished. This app needs to be finished being built. Looks like someone worked on it as a weekend project and then just stopped working on it.

Don't use this app on muni because of any reason. Get down and take others!!! I use to use clippercard, but today the card just out of money. So I active my app on bus immediately because the door was closed. Next stop the police got on the bus and said the time showed it active less then one mins so I got the ticket (there is only 30 sec betwee 2 stop). They want me to request for review. Muni should design a better app to stop this situation. The thing happened on me today could happen on anyone else as well.(or make sure you active it before get on the bus) I won't use this app anymore.

Be cautious with this app. I had an issue with this app dropping my payments and asking me to try again later. I did, and the next thing I knew, I had 8 adult tickets instead of 2. It took 2 weeks to correct the $160 mistake.

Q70%
by Q####:

Haven't had any issues. I do wish there were more directions on how exactly to use it; I was very confused the first time and not sure if I had to do anything extra to validate the ticket.

Though the app boasts trip planning tools, it's really only geared toward purchase of tickets. Since I don't use that feature, my review concentrates on the trip planning features... which range from poor to average. Under Trip Planning, there are two choices: "Plan a Trip" and "Arrivals". "Plan a Trip" plain old doesn't work. Try to fill in the unexplained "A" and "B" fields (I presume that means origin and destination of the proposed trip) - what doe I put there? Names of streets at an intersection? Bus stop's official code? Numbered street address? Doesn't matter any combo gives you an eternal white screen. That's a zero star. "Arrivals" works just like all the other Muni Bus tracking apps, so that's a 2.5 star. If ticket purchase is what you're looking for, maybe you have little choice, but I warn people to read about the expiring/disappearing tickets in other comments here.

I bought a visitor pass with my European phone number and debit card during registration, no problems, all works fine.

Q70%
by Q####:

What a horrific APP. Can't SIGN IN (forgot password). Ask for a REST of the password - it NEVER arrives in my email box. I guess this is typical for SF Muni though.

Q70%
by Q####:

Bus tickets can on be purchased through web site for a specific class of ticket even though the app supposedly lets you.

Q70%
by Q####:

All I wanted to do was track bus locations. Seems like that's the primary reason for a transit app, not to buy fares. Wish they'd focus more on that and integrating with Google Maps if they can't do it themselves.

Trip plan feature goes to blank screen (Android 7)

Q70%
by Q####:

Literally crashes everytime I open it

I70%
by I####:

Works for purchasing tickets just fine and appreciate the lower clipper rates rather than the higher cash rates. App does occasionally crash but it's not that big of the deal as the ticket is still there. Just make sure to validate before boarding the bus/light rail or entering the muni station. Instructions for first time users could be a little clearer (the FAQ on Muni's website is good but afaik the app doesn't direct users there so they have to google it on their own).

Q70%
by Q####:

Good idea, poor implementation. So many things wrong with user experience (UX) that it's hard to know where to start. It's not even beta, it's alpha. For example, tickets are NOT automatically saved online, so they are LOST if anything happens to the app or device. HELLO?! Muni should start over with qualified Android developers.

Q70%
by Q####:

Useful for buying passports but you can't get through ticket gates with it and there are several serious usability bugs. Clicking the passport doesn't always do something, after signing up, it stayed on the signup page and didn't look like it did anything. Same for payment page. I think these were due to poor data connection.

Q70%
by Q####:

Took my money and didn't work. It generated a code, the bus scanned it, and and read as invalid forcing me to pay cash and holding the bus up for a good minute or two. Don't use, or have cash ready for when it fails

W70%
by W####:

The worst! Cannot use it to plan trip just a blank screen. Guys need to talk the developers of DB Navigator and Munich Navigator Apps in Germany, best public transportation apps so far.

Q70%
by Q####:

They recently started demanding location when activating a ticket. No explanation is given other than "to improve service." I don't want to help you improve service, I barely trust you with payment info, let alone location data. Please make that opt in or I will have to opt out of this app as soon as my clipper card is replaced. I'll just use cash for my friends and family instead.

Traveling to San Francisco. Thought the AP would help getting around. Nope absolutely worthless.

I70%
by I####:

Buying a ticket only took minutes to setup, in use tickets easy to show bus drivers and keep track of, built in bus tracker to see next bus coming. Also clear UI and fast.

I always have to launch this app twice: once to dismiss the crash dialog, and once to use my tickets. Baffling errors when used with Visa or AMEX, but it works great with PayPal. Still better than carrying cash.

I70%
by I####:

Convenient app, but im,not sure what to do after the ticket is validated. Do i scan it? If muni police come by do they just scan the qr code? That half of the equation is a little unclear.

T70%

no stars, no stars,' this app fkn bows. I lose my tix everytime i have a system update, despite trying to follow the how to to transfer tix from the device to their server MANUALLY?! and having to transfer back from the server. It seems a company ilke muni can afford a decent app writer, like why not auto sync and backup to the server?? too fkn much, if you must use it, load 1 ticket when you need it and don;t have cash for the bus look into alternatives...

J70%

The app is giving an error saying well-formed when you try to buy tickets and says it is false. Can't buy any ticket.

A70%

I have never, in a decade of living in the SF bay area, known anything associated with SFMTA/MUNI to work at all, let alone properly. I shouldn't be surprised that this is as similarly worthless.

C70%

App requires use of Twitter account which was just Cyber hacked and reported on by National news agencies. Poor choice and an unreasonable request demand by SFMTA.

X70%

Can' t Purchase tickets anymore! Have updated to latest version and purchasing is not working

Blank screen EVERY time I try to plan a trip!
