Праведные сестры Марфа и Мария уверовали во Христа еще до воскрешения Им их брата Лазаря. Иисус часто бывал в их доме: идя в Иерусалим, и возвращаясь из него в Галилею, Он заходил к ним по пути.
Именно с этим семейством связано одно из самых поразительных чудес, совершенных Господом во время Его земной жизни: воскрешение умершего Лазаря. Когда Иисус приближался к Вифании, то Ему сказали, что Лазарь умер и четыре дня уже во гробе. На глазах многолюдной толпы совершилось непостижимое человеческому уму чудо: встал из гроба не мнимо-умерший, а человек, труп которого уже разлагался и издавал смрад. Многие, видя это небывалое чудо, уверовали в Господа.
Святые сестры были в числе жен-мироносиц, которые в числе первых удостоились видеть воскресшего Христа.
Когда наступили гонения на Церковь Иерусалимскую, Праведный Лазарь был изгнан из Иерусалима. Святые сестры Марфа и Мария последовали за ним. Они помогали своему святому брату в благовествовании Евангелия в разных странах.
