About Birding with Gene
This app will give you the opportunity to go bird watching with Gene Stratton-Porter! The Bird List includes most of Gene's beloved birds that still reside in or migrate through the Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva. Along with the times and locations you're most likely to spot each bird, an observation made by Gene about each of these species, or about their habitat or behavior, is included on each species page. Her lyrical descriptions of each bird will help you see the birds through her eyes - their beauty, talents, beneficial nature, and even their funny quirks! So grab your binoculars and your camera, head to Geneva, and walk the trails of Limberlost, Loblolly, and Rainbow Bottom as Gene tells you more about her feathered friends!
This app is not intended to be a field guide; it is designed to instill a love and appreciation for the birds that inspired Gene, and allow you to walk alongside her as she tells you more about the personalities of the birds than a field guide can share. Outstanding field guides, along with many of Gene's books, are available in the Visitor's Center. Limberlost also offers a unique "Rent a Naturalist" program. Whether you have a particular species you hope to find, or you want to learn more about the Swamp and its restoration as you search for birds, a naturalist can lead you on your own customized tour through the area. Be sure to take a tour of Gene's cabin before you leave! Limberlost State Historic Site also offers a variety of programs about birds, from Alexandra's Outreach programs that visit schools and other groups, to Chimney Swift programs that include watching a swirling cloud of birds as they drop straight down at full speed into a nearby roosting site.
