Some scarf knitting patterns are very basic, like the ones made in simple garter stitch. However, if you add some decreases and increases to one side of your project, you will make a wonderful slanted edge that is both interesting and fun to make. If you choose to knit the piece using a self striping yarn, you'll get wonderful stripes effortlessly and completely. Using a solid yarn will give you the same beautiful result.
This scarf is short and simple but you can always make some modifications to it by adding another ball of yarn. If you don't make it as wide as I have outlined below, you will also get more length.
You'll need:
1. Approximately 200 yards of wool blend or wool self striping yarn
2. A pair of size 10 US needles
3. Yarn needle or crochet hook
4. Scissors
Gauge: 8 rows for every inch and 4 and a half stitches.
Size: end product is about 40 inches long and 7 inches wide.
Let's start!
1. Begin by casting on 3 stitches.
2. Knit row 1
3. For the next row, k1, inc1 by scarf knitting patterns in the front and back of the next stitch, then k1.
4. For the next row: knit
5. Increase on the next row in the 2nd stitch as before.
6. Keep on doing this - knitting one row and increasing the next row, until you reach 30 stitches or until such time you reach your desired width.
7. Until the piece is about 33 inches long or until you reach your desired length, knit using straight garter stitch.
8. Start dec on the same side of the work that you inc by k2tog 1 stitch in from the edge on every other row until only 3 stitches are left.
9. Bind off and cut the yarn.
10. Don't forget to weave in ends.
