About FCC Speed Test

What does it do?
The FCC Speed Test app accurately measures your mobile broadband performance and displays an in-depth view of its factors (e.g. download and upload speed, latency, and packet loss).

Why download it?
Learn about your mobile broadband performance in one click. Track it over time.

What about privacy?
No personally-identifiable information is collected whatsoever. Testing is totally anonymous.

Still curious? Read below for more detail.

Mobile broadband has become part of our everyday infrastructure. We hope the app helps provide greater clarity about your mobile broadband performance.

Once installed, the app will run periodically in the background. It will automatically perform tests on the mobile network you are connected to (cellular or Wi-Fi) when you aren’t using your smartphone. Aggregated, anonymous data will also help us build a map of mobile broadband performance across the country.

Privacy is paramount. The FCC has taken significant measures to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of volunteers for this program. Using privacy measures developed and reviewed by a diverse team of privacy experts, any data that could potentially identify specific smartphones is analyzed and processed to ensure privacy protection.

How does this help you?

• Tests run automatically, you don’t even have to think about it.
• Run manual tests on Download Speed, Upload Speed, Latency and Packet Loss. (Make sure to disable Wi-Fi before testing cellular broadband speeds.)
• Additional passive metrics collected such as Cell ID, Signal Strength and GPS location.
• Access real-time performance data on your device.
• Historical results available at the touch of a screen.
• Be a volunteer! You can help the FCC’s Measuring Broadband America program in developing the first open and transparent information on mobile broadband performance in the United States.
• By default, testing is limited to 100 MB per month--always consider your broadband usage carefully on limited data allowance plans.
• Raise your data cap to see more performance data.
• Lower your data cap and set a date to reset data caps so you don’t go over the limit on your plan.
• The app is ad-free.

I have done 12 speed tests back to back on various sites. This app shows download speeds 100 times greater than everyone else. My average speed via some of the top speed test sites is 4kb download. This app claimed 304kb. I do like some of the info it gives like tower info etc. But it definitely needs accurateness worked on. And yes, for those wondering, my brand New ZTE on unlimited data plan with T-Mobile/MetroPCS absolutely sucks speed wise. I've been complaining about paying for what they definitely are not delivering for a couple months now.

I have to say this is the go to test I use. SpeedTest is great don't get me wrong but this is the absolute best in terms of testing packet loss and latency included with no ads. Man!! Wish all apps came like this. But I do get app makers need to get payed and ads help them do just that. So I get it. But this app spoils me. Lol.

Q70%
by Q####:

For something to tell me the speed there are alternatives. But to report crappy service areas from your carrier would be more beneficial. Like a snap shot, cause if you are in a bad area the test doesn't even work so you'd never get the data of a bad area if you can't get a connection to test and prove have bad an area is. Crowd sourcing this info is a good idea but if it's such a bad connection then you can't even help with that.

Okay, but why the hell does Facebook app need to be installed in my phone to share the results? I backdoor via my browser, Yandex, and other items that share also, such as Google's News give me the ability. Think a call to the FCC just might get sorted out the hard way. Bloody sods....

The FCC's comprehensive Broadband data-speed test. This is an "Ad-Free" App. Test your data-speed accurately, and optionally provide data the FCC will use to "transparently" assess why the U.S. ranks like *31st in internet connection speeds. (*Akamai "State of the Internet Study Q4 2015)

by Q####:

Results are probably the most accurate over a lot of other apps which I'v tested. The one thing developer understood is to do away with advertisements which hinder data speeds and in turn inaccurate readings when the results are posted at the end of test. Well done for the FCC;-)

I love the app when it works, the problem seems to be that the app does not activate over a mobile data, a simple update to allow activation while on mobile data, as opposed to Wi-Fi, would greatly increase this apps effectiveness. The update should include an user settable option to use Wi-Fi or mobile data connections. Knowing a bit about programming, the software has everything already implemented, the functions just need to be called differently. Sincerely japreja

Actually a good App! Being produced by the United States Government, I really thought it would be a piece of junk, however the exact opposite was true. This app is simple, yet also can display quite a bit of detail. I wish the IRS would release a tax app that was half as good as this app.

However, Speed test data is way off actual speeds. Which means it's not my phone it's boost mobile. I'm paying for 4g monthly unlimited which is reduced to 3g after 2gb of data usage but i barely get 1g at any given time. Please Help FCC.

I believed them and let it run for months and finally looked (after a "going over limit" for the third month in a row) and the app was by far the biggest mobile data user this month. Awful. Shame on you FCC.

Q70%
by Q####:

I love the data I get from running the speed check. However, I constantly have to go in and activate the connection. It the app loses its activation info then it stops running in the background.

Q70%
by Q####:

Just downloaded, and have tried to "Activate" it at least a dozen times now with no progress. Will uninstall now. Please, let me know if y'all get this bug fixed. It gets half way through "Setting Up" and doesn't even start "Downloading Configuration" or "Activating". If y'all (the developer) contact me, I would be willing to send screenshots of the "System Info" page of the app.

The FCC wants me to have a faster connection, not get ripped off by my ISP, and not let them block websites. I think I just fell in loves with the FCC.

L70%

For some reason on my new phone it will not activate I've tried 15 or 20 times and it just will not activate I downloaded and uninstalled and reinstalled 5 times and still refuse to activate on an Android LTE it worked great on my other phone which was another Android, an update on my new Android ZTE this application will not activate it downloads fine but it will not activate for some reason this phone will not allow it to activate

I don't trust this apo no more, and you shouldn't either. Ajit Pai is the new FCC chariman who wants to rip up net neutrality. So why have a speed test when you ISP can and will throttle you.

Q70%

Does what it is intended to do. This is one time I don't mind a government entity to collect certain information to keep the big corps honest... or at least attempt

App stopped working this evening. It said that it wanted me to reactivate scheduled configuration. Did not work.

Where have you been all my life? I love doing speed tests regularly to verify if I'm getting advertised speeds from my carriers. I'm glad the FCC is collecting objective data and hopefully they can use this to further improve our mobile experiences. I travel often and do speed tests wherever I have my mobile devices: work, school, on the road, libraries, theme parks, hotels, fishing piers, stores/malls, toilets, EVERYWHERE. Was a bit worried that this app would be continuously collecting tests in the background but found under settings that you can turn off this automatic feature. Also, love the fact that you can limit the mobile data cap AND view how much data the app has used. Great features that I think Ookla should incorporate in their ad-generated app (BTW even if you pay to hide the ads, nothing special unlocks!) This app will be used in conjunction with Ookla's Speedtest whenever I want to run a test. Best thing about this app: ad-free! Although I'd gladly pay to support FCC's efforts. Suggestion for improvement: somehow incorporate a login/username/account feature so we can run speed tests on multiple devices and have everything stored on one account? Thanks FCC!

I hope they use it against Verizon to prove to them that users are not getting anywhere near what the 4G spec is. Getting 5mb down and 0.15mb up on a new note 4 is pathetic. I hope all this info is utilized against them one day.

Thanks for the app FCC! Cant wait to see you crunch the data and spin our awful internet speeds in favor of big cable. We pay more money than any country for crappy service as is. Fixing that problem isn't an option...So...charging us more for 'fast lanes' is the answer!

Forcing the industry to provide a better product. I'm glad the FCC is trying to do something about the poor quality isp services in this country.

S70%

Hopefully these results help the FCC realize that our carriers are scamming us and force them to drop prices and improve their networks. Also TWC max speed I get is 300megs but the test says I'm only getting 3 megs. Twc is a huge scam

This app helps me with smaller sample sizes. Options are nice. It doesn't bug me with ads. Performance seems to have been variable during the past 2 years. Recently: Seems fine for both upload and download reporting. 5+ months ago: The download speed was correct and the upload test was capped at 5mbps for my server test. CONCLUSION: The app's performance is probably mostly dependent upon which server you are connected to.

Dispite being "activated" and having been run multiple times both manually and auto/background mode, it does not retain any data. [ Turns out im just not smart enough to switch data sources]

This app stopped working about 3 months ago, and when it did work it ran in the background giving inaccurate results. It pretend test every few days but ever time I open it there's no results. The problem is that the FCC is using the data from the app and makes public policy as a result. It would be better to have no data than the garbage from this app. Why did the app stop saving the test after I got 1gig Internet from a munibroadband provider? COMCAST!!!! Brian Roberts your empire is going down.

Open source, the best for testing wifi and mobile. Gives me latency, packet loss. Wish it'd give me a range of ping times, because it must ping it many times. Could use material design, and I need to share my crappy ISP results via social media. Doesn't let me for no good reason. Other than that, it's the best I've found so far.

This application is wonderful. It is far better than any other speed test application available. I love the fact that it not only gives you the upload and download speeds but also the latency and packet loss. In addition you can get the average reading by week, month, 3 months, or year. I think the only reason it is not rated much higher is due to people's paranoia with it being a government application.
