Coastline - Text Editor for Android
I use this editor because of its simplicity. It has everything I actually need, and the interface is clear too. I'd like to report a bug, though. When you create a new file, save it, type some more and then try to *add a word to a dictionary*, the editor resets itself to the state when the file wasn't saved yet ("Untitled"). The actual file, however, seems to be saved properly. At least *with the autosave feature enabled*, didn't test with that disabled. I hope I put it clear. Thank you and have a nice day!
Clean. Very simple. Dark mode option. Problems: Not integrated well with Android (when clicking on text files, no option to open or any other supported file types with Coastline).
The save button is grayed out for no apparent reason. EDIT: Autosave is enabled. The "no apparent reason" part of my review is still valid. The user should know that his work is being saved. I will edit my rating if this is fixed.
This is excellent. I think the only thing that would make it better is to allow the app to deleat txt files and/or include a light file manager. But over all, this is absolutely wonderful and serves the purpose i need it for. Thank you!
By FAR the best minimalist notepad app I have ever used, very quick, intuitive, no ads, the font is easy to read, saves to folders, remembers your working folder, saves in txt no hidden storage bs. I'm in love :)
I think the autosave is causing me to loose some work, I never noticed any problems until I enabled autosave, otherwise this app is my goto for offline, non prose, non code editor. I am not crazy I know I lost some changes because I went to the office asked for a job number, ... You know what my batteries died, isn't there a way to save when the phone is dead?
Simple, ad free, light.. my needs are met :) Thank you. PS. Is there an undo option? That might be convenient. Maybe I'm missing something.
Only thing I would add is the option to to have the app start with the last txt file you edited, but this is just my opinion and the way it is now is perfect I wouldn't want to ruin it adding many features. Edit: Nice the option was already there, the app is perfect in my opinion.
Autosave makes some operations too slow. For example press and hold backspace. Why don't you increment the autosave interval a bit?
Beautifully done. My only complaint? I wish there was a way to see JUST .txt files upon file opening. Otherwise, perfect.
Its great app with very nice minimal design. However when opening txt files from nextcloud app, its not in the list that could handle txt files.. weird bcuz from default file browser i can open txt file and shows 'open with coastline'. Otherwise would be 5 star
2017-0625-0146(1:46am)EDT mixed feelings, I've been using this for months, it is very easy to access and save etc, except that there's no way to delete files or see their properties. Also, somehow it accesses other directories from time to time and leaves my files there. When it's happened to first I thought my files are disappearing mysteriously. And I can't move them from one director to another, I have to copy the text inside, and leave the old file behind, or else go into it and delete it leaving you a note that says this file should be deleted. And this is strange, my files are parallel come into directories called zero and Legacy. I don't see how this is a backup strategy because it's impossible to delete a file. I found out about the so-called missing files, because I was looking for something else using the Android my files system, and saw the missing files listed alongside the other ones in a directory called documents. Also, I learned how to use this particular text system by accident, the tiny little two dots underneath the evaluation Stars allows you to move between the Stars and the text. So anyway, I would give Coastline a 5 but for the confusion with the subdirectories and weak Help. Forget about finding anything out using Google "Coastline app". I happened to get in here by somehow getting into Play Store. Also it would help if Coastline had a Help file. What would it cost? A few kilobytes. For goodness sake. bill34543-at-yahoodotcom
hoorah!! finally found an excellent app for opening & creating text files. ... now just need an option to allow Coastline to open files as the default app.
Didn't save to external storage. But more importantly didn't tell me it failed. Just returned as if successful. Luckily I tested 1st.
Exactly what I needed: lightweight, dark theme, no ads, and simple to use. With search, it's a five-starrer.
Unable to discover how to delete anything!
crashed first time. crapware
Works with WhatsApp text file. No full screen. No copy button. Share option only after sliding.
Very useful app
Please start supporting Marshmallow security model. I can not save modified files.
Best text editor ever. Simple and beautiful, without ads. Great work!
One word Perfect :) The most comfortable simple text editor.
Doesn't show up when opening txt files intent chooser
Good, but needs the ability to toggle word wrap.
awsome that there still are good and free apps
Very fast, very good
Simply perfect :)
Perfect
I like the look of the app very much and the way it works. A very great app. If I could I would give you 10 stars or even more.
Does edit txt files, just what I need, but it doesn't show up in "Open With" menu, which is a huge bummer since I can't open files from other places. I see that this issue has been reported once by you couldn't replicate. Don't know what info I could provide to help. Tried reinstalling, also restarting the device, didn't help. The "Apps -> Coastline -> Open by default -> Open supported links" option is also grayed out. Looks like the app isn't registering itself as a text file handler.
This is an editor with great potential. But lacks stability (opens slow and scrolling gets locked) with moderately large files (XML) with 480KB which works fine on Jota. I am rating 4 for its interface, navigation and it's potential to beat others. Better stability and more free fonts like Lato and PT Sans will get my 5 stars. Thanks and keep it up.
Opens the file (on my ext sd card) okay, but when I select save (or even 'save as'), while it gives no error msg saying it HASN'T saved, it hasn't actually saved. There should be some type of error msg in program if the save attempt fails! And darn TPTB for screwing up the extsd card access. Open from extsd, save to int, then open file explorer to manually move. Sigh. Guess I will keep using Jota, as I like being able to use my preferred outside font (that has easily visible differences between 0O and Il1).
Wow, with all the ad-ridden multi-permission bloatware in the app store, this developer deserved huge credit. Open/edit/save plain text file, incl cut-and-paste, with sensible clean menu. A genuine free app. Thanks.
Simple, easy to use but very effective. Predictive text is very smart. Saves a lot of time. One quibble. 'Save' ought to tell you it has saved and close the side panel.
The only thing I'm missing is the option of setting the line break type to Windows compatible. Other than than, it's pretty much perfect as far as I'm concerned.
Great app for editing .txt files straight off the device storage, without all that import export hassle. Developers: could you add an option to make web links in the text active, to save me copypasting into my browser? Because then it would be perfect ☺
First impressions: clean, simple and intuitive. Just what I wanted, as a "Notepad"-type editor, with simple navigation. This editor deserves many more users than it's attracting! Thanks and congratulations to the developer for a nice bit of kit.
Can you add option to allow font size to go below 14! That's the minimum at the moment, down to 10 or 8 would be good. Thanks
I tried to open a 1MB log file (200k lines) and it displayed only a small portion of the beginning. Otherwise nice.

This editor keeps itself out of the way, and it is a great relief not to have to fight my tools. It would be nice if there were a quick way to jump to the end of a file, and a search function would be welcome. But everything I've wanted to do with it (with those exceptions) is available in the most obvious way. Congrats. I'm glad you'll be adding search, bc I just now wanted to search a list for a name. Is there an ETA?
