About Rocklogger

Rocklogger is a geological tool for measuring the orientation of rock outcrops. It uses the phone's compass and orientation sensors to measure dip & dip direction, or dip & strike, in a single click.
GPS and magnetic field information can also be saved, along with details on the rock plane & type.

Key features:
-Log dip & strike or dip & dip direction by placing the phone on the rock/plane in any orientation (using the rotating symbol and quick help features as guides).
-Android Wear companion app to view and save (paid only) live sensor readings from your phone remotely on your watch, and vice-versa. Alternatively, log remotely using a wired headset (paid only) as a remote control. Great for logging hard-to-reach surfaces
-Plot logs on a map, with correct dip/strike symbols
-Plot logs on alternate basemaps from various sources including MapBox, zip files and the web (paid only)
-Plot poles or planes from logs on a stereonet, and interpret by touching the plot to find trends and intersections (paid only)
-Define your own extra text and dropdown fields, to fit your logging scheme (paid only)
-Log the ambient magnetic field
-Launch the camera to take photos while logging. Notes and GPS data are saved to the log file. Photos are stored with the log file, and are automatically attached when you send a log via email from the browser screen

The log is saved to a .csv file, which can be sent to Excel / Mapinfo / etc for interpreting. Paid versions can also export KML files for use in Google Earth (Android or desktop version).

Taking the strike and dip of outcrops with a compass / declinometer usually takes a few minutes per rock. With Rocklogger, many measurements of an outcrop can be taken in seconds (in any orientation). It also works upside-down, eg for logging overhang in a mine.

The evaluation version is limited to saving 3 records per 3 minutes, and has the stereonet plotter, KML export and custom basemap features disabled. Rocklogger Unlocker is available for purchase to disable the evaluation version restrictions.

Could really use an overturned bedding symbol. Otherwise, super useful for doing casual geology, or to quickly produce stereonets from measurements.

Among the giants on the market. Very useful and easy to use. Cheers!!

Please add waypoint averaging in future updates. Even if it is in the paid version and add ability to save to google account or dropbox. Would make app perfect.

Indispensable app for any geologist. Makes fieldwork 100× easier for me since it's an all in one app. Purchased version is totally worth it.

I've really enjoyed this app. I've tested it multiple times with my Brunton and been within a few degrees in strike and tenths in dip as long as you wave the phone around for a bit to calibrate it. Extremely happy. Now just need to be able to export coordinates as UTM nad83.

L70%
by L####:

I've used it on a field trip, taking pictures with coordinates, plotting them on a map... It helped me a lot. Open the map with a good internet connection and then go to your trip, no chance at all to get lost.

If you're a geologist, don't even hesitate to add this invaluable tool to your kit. PS ability to record magsus data will make iphone geos jealous.

Great app, installed it the morning of our geomechanics field trip, by the end of the day wed given up on the normal compass as too slow and laborious

R70%
by R####:

Great app but not yet good enough to replace compass clino. All the app needs is a better averaging of compass direction.

A logical development would be for stereonets to be included in the Rocklogger software bundle enabling quick determinations of planar and linear trends of the collected data. When stereonets, rose diagrams, maps and image capabilities are added it will achieve a 5 star rating!

This app should be on every geo's phone! I hate taking pen and paper notes in the field, but Rocklogger has changed everything... I've taken hundreds of records by this point, and it's brilliant if you are aware of the limitations of your device. Just watch out if you have a flip case with a magnetic fastener in it, and calibrate often. The only downside (not the apps fault!) is that you're more likely to put your nice phone near rocky outcrops, I trashed my old phone by dropping it face-down on a nice sandstone outcrop. Totally worth it though. Also, this app makes stereonets fun.

Ability to give code or ID to each reading within a traverse will be great rather than having date and time as heading. Also multiple photos attached to the same ID will be added plus.

To all recording modes. I personally will use dip and strike for a traverse, would be nice to have a button to take a quick camera shot (without to much previewing) with its filename saved as current gps coordinates. *Edit* field move seems to be able to provide the in line picture function already and just seems to be a lot more intuitive than rock logger, I'm guessing it will just be a matter of time before it surpasses in other manors too y the look off its development.

great app but on my Atrix the tick marks for dip direction are facing the wrong way? Update... fixed thank you!

Very good application for geologists but projection datum should be changeable like ED50, WGS84 etc.

As a geologist, I was thrilled to find this app, turning my Droid2 into a quick electronic strike & dip measurement tool. I wouldn't recommend using any phone compass for professional measurements yet, but this app is great for making quick measurements that so far seem pretty good. The updates have been significant improvements that reflect good quality. Keep up the great work!!

For measuring axial planes one should have the option to record the information at trend/plunge. Other than that this is an amazing app! Well Done!

This is a great tool for use in the field, and saves heaps of time on data processing back in the office. Especially like the feature to export to google maps and see stereonets in the field without all the old school time consuming plotting!

I wish I had this last week, when the client was spending too long under an unstable wall taking dodgy readings with a plastic Suunto. Oh, just a note to developers on the Quick Help. Help should tell us how to use the app. I think anyone who downloads this app would already know what dip and dip direction mean. Thanks.

Dip measurements are very precise, but azimuth or strike values differ a lot, hence cannot be used. The way you hold the phone (landscape vs portrait) seems to make a big difference. Tested on a Nexus S.
