About Cantonese Basic Phrases - Works offline

Military-related basic phrases for foreign language learners of Cantonese (粵語 / 廣東話), with audio, Romanization, and Chinese script. Use this app to select an English phrase and view its translation and how to pronounce it in Cantonese.

This app uses Yale Romanization with diacritics to indicate the six tones as in sī (詩) sí (史) si (試) sı̏ (時) sı̋ (市) sị (事). Note that in colloquial Hong Kong Cantonese pronunciation, the consonants 'n' and 'l' are often mixed, as well as the consonant 'ng' with the null initial. Regardless of the pronunciations you may encounter, the Romanization reflects the original initial consonant. Also note that the initials 'j' and 'ch' are widely pronounced as 'dz' and 'ts' in many localities across the Cantonese-speaking region, including Hong Kong. Texts are given in Traditional Chinese script.

This app was originally developed as an entry to the 2010 CIO/G6 "Apps for the Army" competition, and it is based on the modules publicly available online from the U.S. Defense Language Institute. Content edited and arranged by Percy Wong; app development by Robert Theis.

Too many military and police phrases why?!?!?! Needs more colloquial and everyday. I dont need to know how to rob a bank if I was in Southern China

I'm unlikely to be threatening to shoot people during my short stay in Canton. Still I'm surprised there are no directions to Starbucks and Burger King, given the apparent audience.

It's so hilarious that the app makers used this category of phrases as the first things to learn!!! For cops and #blacklivesmatter supporters, you'll definitely be able to relate.

Great app, I have refreshed my basic Cantonese skills. I am now also prepared to interrogate new people I meet and navigate a mine field.

There are not many words and phrases but it does have a good range of basics. The words have super clear sound reproduction and makes it easy to hear how the Cantonese words should be pronounced, which is of utmost importance for a tonal language. The interface is simple and for each word / phrase has the English, Chinese and some sort of bespoke romanization that I've not seen before but is straight forward enough to understand. When words are played it is repeated twice, once at a normal native talking speed and once at a slowed down speed. This is an excellent feature and I commend the app creator for their creativity in adding this. Overall excellent.

This app has warnings that look way too suited for armed robbery, it's very useful and handy. I wish it had an auto play or repeat button though

I highly recommend it! This app makes learning Cantonese alot easier, I also love that the audio contains normal speed and slowed down pronunciation. That makes it alot easier to check whether I pronounce it correctly. I also have a suggestion,I know this app is mainly aimed towards military personnel but could you perhaps add some phrases for when someone wants to buy some food? Like "I would like to purchase....." or "I would like it to take" That would be really awesome :) many thanks for this great app!

"SAB" should be pronunciated as "SUB". Many other poor examples exit.

Very helpful app. Thanks! Been looking for cantonese app and this is better than what i tried so far...

Y70%

but it has way too many phrases I will never need such as evacuate the area, or stop or I'll shoot. lol? needs more phrases one can use! I like that it pronounces utility twice, but that should be optional as I use it to read it out loud to people and it's bothersome then!

But I tried to use it to learn a bit so I could speak Cantonese with my boyfriend but he doesn't seem to understand a bunch since he speaks in slang... would be nice if the app had slang...

I downloaded this so I could communicate with patient's that speak Cantonese. This app has so much more. There are the basic phrases like hello and my name is....but also Stop or I'll shoot. SERIOUSLY there are interrogation phrases too. Not that I'll ever need to use them.
