الطيب صالح -أو عبقري الرواية العربية كما جرى بعض النقاد على تسميته- أديب عربي من السودان، اسمه الكامل الطيب محمد صالح أحمد. ولد عام (1348 هـ - 1929م) في إقليم مروي شمالي السودان بقرية كَرْمَكوْل بالقرب من قرية دبة الفقراء وهي إحدى قرى قبيلة الركابية التي ينتسب إليها، وتوفي في أحدي مستشفيات العاصمة البريطانية لندن التي أقام فيها في ليلة الأربعاء 18 فبراير 2009. عاش مطلع حياته وطفولته في ذلك الإقليم، وفي شبابه انتقل إلى الخرطوم لإكمال دراسته فحصل من جامعتها على درجة ا البكالوريوس في العلوم. سافر إلى إنجلترا حيث واصل دراسته، وغيّر تخصصه إلى دراسة الشؤون الدولية السياسية.
