About Talking GPS Speedometer

Using your GPS device and Text-to-Speech engine, "Talking GPS Speedometer" dynamically announces the current "speed", "direction" and/or "bearing" of any sustained motion event including walking, running, biking, skiing, boating, motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, automobile, airplane, and more. "Talking GPS Speedometer" includes setup options for enabling and disabling the speed, direction and bearing announcements; selecting the speed, direction & bearing announcement frequency, setting the speed and bearing announcement digital precision; selecting the speed conversion units, and a TTS Test Mode for evaluation/testing.

**Please read “TTS Test Mode” info below regarding random number versus GPS device generated data before Rating app**

"Talking GPS Speedometer" is an example of a multi-threaded Android application demonstrating simultaneous processing of GPS data and Text-to-Speech announcements implemented as a remote service with a user interface activity for setup, monitoring operation and service start/stop control. Speed, Direction and Bearing are exclusively derived from the GPS device. The application is specifically designed to run on all GPS-enabled Android phone and tablet devices beginning with Android 1.6 (API Level 4).

Before starting "Talking GPS Speedometer" your GPS device must be enabled and a Text-to-speech (TTS) engine installed. The main activity allows the user to "start" and "stop" the Talking GPS Speedometer service directly via Start and Stop buttons. This screen includes a large text view for displaying the current speed and another for displaying the current direction and bearing. The screen also includes details relating to Provider, Last Satellite Fix, Has Accuracy, Satellite Accuracy, Has Altitude, Altitude, Has Bearing, Bearing, Direction, Has Speed, Speed, Latitude and Longitude.

Starting the Service: To start the "Talking GPS Speedometer" service click on the Start button. A gear box icon appears in the status bar indicating the service is running. The default settings are now applied and any significant motion events will trigger the announcements. Last Satellite Fix, Satellite Accuracy, Altitude, Latitude and Longitude fields show active data even though you are not in motion. When in motion the Bearing, Direction & Speed fields will show active data. Announcements don't occur when the user disables them in the Settings menu, or when the user is not in significant motion, or when the GPS device is not enabled.

Stopping the Service: To stop the "Talking GPS Speedometer" service click on the Stop button. The gear box icon is removed from the status bar indicating the service is no longer running. You can restart the service by clicking the Start button. Press the Home or Back button on your device to exit the Talking GPS Speedometer Activity.

Shutting Down: To shutdown the Talking GPS Speedometer application and service click on the Shutdown button. Select Yes to shutdown or No to skip shutting down the application and service. Selecting Yes removes the gear box icon from the status bar indicating the service is no longer running. Selecting Yes will also exit the Talking GPS Speedometer application.

Settings Menu: On the Settings page you can dynamically change text-to-speech and unit conversion options that affect the announcement characteristics for Speed, Direction and Bearing. This includes if the feature is enabled, announcement frequency, announcement decimal precision and speed conversion unit selection.

Note: Since the Direction is derived directly from the Bearing, the Direction and Bearing announcement frequency are both set using the Bearing announce frequency.

TTS Test Mode: From the Settings menu this option when enabled enters TTS Test Mode and announces random number generated variations of Speed, Direction and Bearing based upon your announce frequency and announce precision settings. Disabling test mode will enable run mode and take data directly from the GPS device.

I works great with Garmin GLO with Bluetooth GPS app activated. But I agree with Albert Santoso - turn off the word "Speed", please. It's so annoying. I'm timing boat speed with this app and need speech frequency at 5 sec. Would be great to turn off speech "km per hour" too. We set the app - we all know the unit we are using... no need to be reminded in every 5 sec.

2nd update: after a nice troubleshoot from the developer, the app works as it should be. It's a nice and simple app, no more no less. It gives some data readings, but most importantly it speaks up the speed and bearing. For giving the users as said, simple and straight forward, it's a 5 stars. Now if you can do a brief mode, where it'll only 'say' the speed digits without the word speed... that would be 6 out of 5 stars. :) Original review 1 star - Not accurate at all. Erratic reading, giving me different numbers when when I'm at full stop. Xperia Z1.

Why can't I terminate this application without either force killing in setup, disabling it, or rebooting my phone? Enough said. Uninstall. I really don't need to know how fast I'm walking into the house after getting out of my car and thinking it's been stopped AND shutdown... Twice...

This app is exactly what I needed. Old motorcycle has a metric speedo and an inaccurate one at that. This app is perfect from keeping my perception of speed in line.

Hmmm when i first used it, i heard the text to speech and im just wondering why it changed the voice. The first voice i heard on it sounds better, but after that it had changed.

Keep announcing wrong speed. The word 'speed' is annoying which should optionally be omitted

How fast does your ATV go - or your riding mower for that matter? Now you can know. Also great because you don't have to find a speedometer read out somewhere on a screen when you should be looking where you are going.

Reporting speeds of anything between 16 to over 150 Mph over a shopping trip in the London suburbs. At one point I was reversing into a parking space at 159mph... pants !

Im driving a vehicle locked at 90km/h and the voice says "Six point one kilometers" then moments later voice says "two hundred twenty three point five kilometers" like WTF ??????! Poor quality.

I use this when spreading fertilizer on my hay fields. Does a great job of letting me know tractor speed for even application.

Update..if it helps debug I have bearing announce disabled. This app is exactly what I want but it seems to have a bug. The bug is speed will get stuck on a value. Stopping and starting the app will make it work again for a while. Fix the bug and id pay for this app. Nothing else like it..simple..clean.. using it for current speed while running or walking.

Works well. I needed this while riding my motorcycle to work after my speedo cable broke. I didn't have any issues with it at all and found it to be accurate almost everywhere I went. The UI is a little unpolished but you shouldn't judge a functionality app on looks alone.

T70%
by T####:

Rubbish. Said I was doing everything from 4mph to 160mph while doing a steady speed. Maybe doesn't like bendy roads so great for I75 but not Europe

O70%

My cycle computer was pinched - so this fits the bill nicely. It works perfectly. Do remember that accuracy can depend on your phone's hardware and surroundings - not the app. A time announcement , plus a low speed mute I.e. when walking (with bike) would be cool.

The most incredible free talking speedometer application on Google Play I use Talking GPS Speedometer to double check my speed in my car and my boat. This is by far the best free speedometer, direction and bearing rendering application on Google Play. The setup options cover everything I needed including announcement frequency and precision. You can also set the speed conversion unit between Kilometers Per Hour, Knots and Miles Per Hour. The application is very functional and behaves correctly when receiving a telephone call or alarm event where the audio is automatically muted. In run mode you also see the latitude, longitude, altitude, speed, direction, bearing, and satellite accuracy.

Would be nice if it could say the time as well at a certain interval

Would of gave this app 5 stars if it worked while playing music simultaneously.
