If you are finally decisive about going ahead with that home bar, you need to be aware of the options available to you on its selection. There are specifically three options from which you can choose. Option one would be to design the bar, build and install it yourself. This would work for you if you are handy with carpenter skills or know someone who is and have a difficult location in mind for your home bar that requires custom touches. If that is not the case, you can buy a used bar, install it as is or make any required modifications to bring it up to your standards and fit the designated area of your home in which you want it located. Lastly, you can buy a spanking new bar with all the bells and whistles of your dreams, ready for installation.

Therefore, whatever choice is decided upon, it is critical to reflect on a number of processes and considerations that will reduce frustration and yield a wonderful entertaining unit and value added dimension to the home.

First of all, as with any important undertaking, it is important to have a plan. Consequently, the home of bar builder should identify that area within the home in which the bar will be placed. It is paramount that drawings to scale be made and conducive to the style of home bar that is desired. Those typical styles of bars that can be considered include a standard straight sided bar, a home bar in the shape of an L, a horseshoe shaped bar or a home bar that is rectangular in dimension. It is also important to determine whether this bar will be a permanent fixture or can be moved.

The planning stage also needs to cover where in the room the home bar will be situated. If the bar is to be in the middle of a room, it must look presentable from all angles; a rectangular shaped bar would fill that need. On the other hand, if your home bar is going to be in a corner or against a wall, you don?t care if the side against the wall or sides in the corner are finished and presentable. Here a simple straight sided structure would do nicely.

Plan also for whether you want your home bar to have fine cabinetry above it or not-so-fine cabinetry below the bar, as no one will see them but the bartender.

You need to plan for electricity if the bar is to contain a refrigerator, light fixtures, etc and whether you want a wet or dry bar. For a wet bar, of course, you will need to plan for plumbing.

There are numerous design styles for the home bar. Some of them would include a rail for guests to rest their feet below their stools, padding for the counter top where guests can rest their arms and perhaps a beer tap for a tall foamy cold one. A very important aspect of the design will be the type of bar seating desired. Options are standard home bar stools of either wood or metal or shoot for the moon and go with leather covered seats with backs and perhaps a swivel mechanism.

Basically, you need an idea for what you want the finished cabinet bar or home bar to look like. This is the end goal you will have in mind as you plan, design, and build your bar. Do you have an idea? If so, grab some paper and a pencil right now and make a quick sketch to capture your idea and start the process. Maybe you only know what you want the general shape to be, or maybe you have particular shelving or bar top design in mind. Whatever your ideas may be, get them down on paper ASAP. What if you have no clear or structured ideas? In this case, I encourage you to look at various examples, such as on-line pictures the home bars you find appealing. Consider what you like or don't like about the various designs. By the time you have looked at a dozen or so examples you will start to have at least one idea of what you want incorporated into the design of your own custom cabinet bar, home bar, or home liquor cabinet.
