About Reddit: The Official App

Funny cat photos, trending news stories, and the best discussions on the internet—these are just a few of the awesome things the official Reddit app does best.

On Reddit, there’s a community for every subject imaginable: your favorite sports team, relationship advice, memes, the latest in news and politics—all in real time.

And if you like gifs (or jifs, jiffys, glyphs, ifs, however you choose to mispronounce it), we’re positive you'll love it.

What’s that you say, girl? “What about a community dedicated solely to images of cats standing on their hind legs?”

We got that, too.

Whether you’re into movies or space travel, baking or weight training, cheesy dad jokes or more NSFW humor, world news or Hollywood gossip—or all of the above—you can instantly share your content and ideas with an audience of millions.

We’re not saying Reddit is like all your favorite apps put together. But if we were saying that, we’d tell you it has:

• the trendy headlines of Twitter
• the educational content of Quora
• the viral pics of Memebase and Imgur
• the jokesters of Tumblr
• the lols of 9GAG and theCHIVE
• the cringeworthy personal stories of FML and Fail Blog
• the rage comics of fourchan
• and the powerful, human stories found only on Reddit.

(Oops, we went full circle.)

So the next time you’re bored and need a break—wait, you’re bored right now? Why are you still reading this? Download the app already!

Those cats won’t stand on their hind legs forever...

What are users saying about Reddit: The Official App

The app is good but sometimes it'll just refresh forever and won't have any content until you clear the app's data and/or cache. EDIT: This has been fixed! EDIT: Update 2.1.9 makes it harder to collapse threads. (EDIT2: Realised you have to long-press to collapse but this is still harder than just tapping). Personally, I do like the new navigation buttons though, it makes it much easier to access my inbox.

I've noticed that sometimes when I try to find a new community on reddit, but I don't know what it's called, I try to search for it but to no avail. It usually shows up blank and I have to try another word or something. It'd be a great improvement if you could add a "related searches" feature so people can type in a few keywords and find a multitude of communities to choose from. Nevertheless, great app! Very fun to use and I learn new things everyday!

As being a part of the PC Master Race, I love the r/pcmasterrace subreddit. Reddit allows like-minded people to connect. This app is one of the best ways to use Reddit. The only critique I can think of is that unsubscribed subreddits don't automatically update.

Z70%
by Z####:

The last update removed r/all and replaced it with popular which sucks. Why would you block mobile users from viewing r/all? Too many T_D post there for your liking there u/spez? Or maybe r/libertarian and other non liberal subreddits were gaining too much steam there too. Just give mobile users r/all back and make popular a separate thing. If you don't T_D and other subs just let people remove them themselves.

Z70%
by Z####:

The new UI is disgusting. The fact that you have to hold to collapse a comment now is terrible. The fact that I had to figure it out on my own is worse. If you accidentally click a user's name then hit the x, it takes you out of the post and then a bug will probably cause the post you wanted to scroll randomly elsewhere. This update was a big mistake.

G70%
by G####:

The new update has made this app worse. The change to collapse the thread is confusing. When trying to share a post without opening the post it prompts me to create a new post. So I have to open the post then share. When backing out of a post you lose you position in the list of posts, which is so frustrating. This update changed a good app into a bad app.

Z70%
by Z####:

The newest update is horrible. The design is less intuitive and the inability to search for subreddits only is annoying as hell. The worst thing about the app is its network calls. No retry logic, no detailed info of why your search failed, probably a short timeout or some other BS. Basically, whenever you're not on a great connection, the whole app starts breaking down. I guess that reddit requires a better connection than YouTube, since it won't work under the same conditions.

Z70%
by Z####:

The new UI is clunky and a pain in the butt. When I click to view my comments, it doesn't take me directly to the comment I select. When I navigate out of the comment , "My comments" is empty and I have to refresh it. When it's loading more stories as I'm scrolling, the screen jumps around and I can't see the current post I'm trying to look at. The new collapse feature is more time consuming if I want to collapse posts and not read all the junk. Please fix this.

Z70%
by Z####:

I really loved the reddit app until this last update. Now it is difficult to collapse the comments, and if your screen times out it reloads the entire post. You either have to long press every comment or scroll down until you find your place again. They need to go back to the previous version.

V70%
by V####:

Landscape mode is still not implemented, which makes the app almost useless on large tablets. Also, the notification bar at the top is black, which makes the app look old and antiquated. The color of the bar should change to match the subreddit you're in. See the Sync for Reddit app as an example.

Z70%
by Z####:

The new UI update is terrible. All of the icons always show, so when you're browsing, you will probably accidentally touch one that redirects you. And then when you touch back to go back to where you were, it exits the entire app. There was nothing wrong with the old UI whatsoever. They just decided to make it crap.

X70%
by X####:

New update has the posts randomly swap places, update, and so forth too often, end up selecting the wrong post way too much. Stop this. Will not load anything even when there is a reliable internet connection sometimes. Also the ability to edit your flair would be nice.

V70%
by V####:

Interstitial nag webpage promoting this app on reddit is annoying as hell. I installed the app purely to leave a review protesting the very annoying interstitial page. I do not want or need the app, I have a very capable tablet for which the original and proper site is best suited. Please read up the multiple surveys which show users hate interstitial pages promoting mobile apps. Now uninstalling app

Z70%
by Z####:

Ughhhh. Whyyyyy? The hold down to collapse? Hate it. Can't acess r/all? Hate it. Only can access r/popular? Seems like a money grab so I'm forced to look at promoted posts. In a linked thread and try to collapse comments? Rockets you back to the top. Frustrated. Loved it before the update, feeling like long meetings with too many non-developers took place for this app. Bosses, if you have no development experience stop forcing crap choices onto your team. Yuck.

Z70%
by Z####:

Your recent update doesn't allow me to view my comments and to responds to the responses to my comments. It takes me to the top comment and with 2,000 comments good luck finding the person who responded. It used to take me directly to my comment in order to read a thread sensibly and engage in a dialogue with someone. This really is a step backwards and shuts down communication. And searching for a subreddit has become mystifying. It spins and spins and half the time I get a result. Please fix these glitches. Thanks.

Z70%
by Z####:

The design is much better--cleaner, more intuitive/easier to use, more aesthetically pleasing--on the app compared to the desktop website. I wish the app had the ability to flair posts and post photos in the comments section. The latest update has an issue where you're not always about to click on Community Info.

B70%
by B####:

The newest update is bad. People have their opinions of the UI changes but I don't really care. Taking out the ability to view r/all is stupid. And most of the time any searches come back with errors. Full signal and still empty results.

Z70%
by Z####:

EDIT: Rated back up to five stars after devs replied to my comment and let me know that collapsing threads is done by long press. Original: Why did you get rid of the tap collapse option? I can see placing it in line with the upvote buttons so as to not confuse collapse vs click on link or user name. But seriously I will probably quit using the app comment section as it is much to frustrating now.

C70%
by C####:

Collapsing comments can now only be done through the comment's menu, and sometimes that doesn't even work. There's no easy way to jump to the top of my front page?? Completely unnecessary changes.

Z70%
by Z####:

The new update is pretty fantastic as far as UI and usability are concerned. They didnt remove comment collapsing; you just have to long tap the comment now. However, as far as I can tell, the ability to manually enter a subreddits name has disappeared. You'll have to subscribe to a subreddit through the desktop site in order to access it in app. This is either a poor or overlooked decision, and I will likely be uninstalling because of this. Devs, if you're reading: add a text field with auto subreddit complete to the communities tab.

Z70%
by Z####:

The new UI is appalling. Loaded with bugs too, everytime i check my comments and back out it fails to load the previous page. The menu is dreadful. Please put it back to how it was and I will rectify my 5 star review. Terrible terrible update choice.

L70%
by L####:

Downgraded to one star. The new UI came out of nowhere (the app was great as it was). Long tap to collapse is definitely a step backward. Also the subreeddit search feature is useless now. Hoping you can revert back some of these changes.

Z70%
by Z####:

I cannot find r/all only "popular" which is just an even more heavily censored version of reddit... it basically removes any political speech that the reddit executives disagree with. What does it tell you about reddit that they refuse to show you unfiltered content? You cannot be for freedom of speech and actively silence all dissenting opinions.

Z70%
by Z####:

The new update is awful. I can't even find the replies I get, as it gets lost in the hundreds of other comments in a thread. Also not being able to collapse top level posts by tapping is incredibly inconvenient.

L70%
by L####:

I do not like the recent update. I'm happy that I'm finally getting notifications from replies to my posts and comments, but clicking on the notification only takes me to the thread. This isn't helpful if the the thread is huge, as I may have to sort through 100s of comments. Also, I don't like that it's now harder to collapse comments in a thread.

Z70%
by Z####:

The new update doesn't allow for collapsing parent comments like the old one and has taken away r/all. Bring these 2 features back and I'll rate higher. Kudos for the addition of notifications, that's nice.

S70%
by S####:

Obviously the Reddit community is great as always. The only problem is when I'm reading down a deep thread, and happen to switch apps, it jumps back to the top when I switch back to Reddit. And all that scrolling is more than a little inconvenient.

Z70%
by Z####:

New update messed this app up. The UI is horrible. There is no reply to a PM anymore. I need to make a new message now? Why? Why would you change something that people liked?

Z70%
by Z####:

Unable to collapse thread with one touch. Updates to the UI are poorly thought out. Add article (+)button is invisible on some screens, yet still clickable. Lazy dev. Do not download.

S70%
by S####:

How is it that the official app is the absolute worst for general functionality? I have an S7 and can't even load half of the gifs when on good wifi. Overall UI feels clunky even after a few months of use. It's hard to believe a website as big as this would feel happy with the performance of this app.

Z70%
by Z####:

Helps me solve my day to day problems with technological ideas and issues that pop up. Community is great! The app just let's me do it faster and better than if I were to use a browser.

Z70%
by Z####:

before the update, I could go to another app really quickly and go back to reddit and have it keep my place. If I do that now, it refreshes the entire thread I'm on, therefore reopening all the comment threads I'd collapsed. This is super annoying.

Z70%
by Z####:

Really nice and intuitive. Only bugaboo I have is trying to click links in comments--if I don't have the accuracy of a brain surgeon, the comment collapses. Pretty frustrating. Also, when I press the button to "Load more comments" it doesn't do anything but make the button disappear. No new comments, no more button.

Z70%
by Z####:

This has gone from being a great way to browse Reddit to becoming borderline unusable. When I return to my list after reading a post I will be in a completely different part of the list. While viewing the list posts will load and unload randomly meaning I am unable to read anything for more than a brief moment. It was great prior to this update, while I dislike the fact that r/all has been removed in favour of r/popular, I can live with it. But the disruption of the basic functions of the app is ridiculous. *Update* Now when I return to the list from a post I get pushed back to the top of the list. Meaning I either scroll back or just delete the ruddy app. Guess which one I'm choosing. Please fix.

Z70%
by Z####:

Lots of stoppage issues , now its telling me I can't view the WTF subreddit for some reason , when I'm subscribed to it. WTF guys ? If it continues I will simply Uninstall it and go through a Web browser.

X70%
by X####:

"App doesn't support split screen" Why the hell not? You actively had to disable split screen for it to tell me that, what is the reason? Also, there is no way in the app to read comments below a certain depth. It makes /r/askouija unenjoyable.

L70%
by L####:

New update is awful. Can't easily find replies to comments, took forever to figure out how to collapse comments, and failing to load or getting stuck refreshing has increased to a point where it's seriously annoying to even use the app most of the time.

Z70%
by Z####:

Used to love this but the new update is el stinko. It won't let me view communities I am subscribed to, and it won't collapse threads for some reason now. Do you guys not have a UX team?

Z70%
by Z####:

Too bad it quits articles as soon as you press the home button. Also, an option to permanently sort the feed in a way other than 'Hot' would be very appreciated. Saved posts button could be easier to reach as well.

Z70%
by Z####:

It was pretty great. Just what I expected. Occasionally I get locked out of communities randomly sometimes it's because of my internet but other time there doesn't seem to be a reason. But great otherwise and that doesn't happen often.
