المعلقات السبع
هي من أشهر ما كتب العرب في الشعر وسميت معلقات. وقد قيل لها معلقات لأنها مثل العقود النفيسة تعلق بالأذهان. ويقال أن هذه القصائد كانت تكتب بماء الذهب وتعلق على استار الكعبة قبل مجيء الإسلام، وتعتبر هذه القصائد أروع وأنفس ما قيل في الشعر العربي القديم لذلك اهتم الناس بها ودونوها وكتبوا شروحا لها، وهي عادة ما تبدأ بذكر الأطلال وتذكر ديار محبوبة الشاعر وتكون هذه المعلقات من محبته له شعاره الخاص.
وقيل إن حماد الراوية هو أول من جمع القصائد السبع الطوال وسماها بالمعلقات (السموط). وكان يقول أنها من أعذب ماقالت العرب وأن العرب كانو يسمونها بالسموط (المعلقات). ذهب الأدباء والكتاب من بعده لدراستها. مثل ابن الكلبي. وابن عبد ربه صاحب العقد الفريد وأضاف بكتابه أمر تعليقها بالكعبة. قد تجدهم سبع قصائد في كل كتاب قديم لكن منهم من أضاف قصيدة لشاعر وأهمل قصيدة الآخر. فاحتاروا من هم السبعة. فجعلوها عشر. وهم :
سبع معلقات تضاف إليها ثلاث لتصبح عشر معلقات والسبع هي:
قِفَا نَبْكِ مِنْ ذِكْرَى حَبِيبٍ ومَنْزِلِ (امرؤ القيس).
لخولة أطلال ببرقة ثهمد، لـ (طرفة بن العبد).
آذَنَتنَـا بِبَينهـا أَسـمَــاءُ (الحارث بن حلزة).
أَمِنْ أُمِّ أَوْفَى دِمْنَـةٌ لَمْ تَكَلَّـمِ (زهير بن ابي سلمى).
أَلاَ هُبِّي بِصَحْنِكِ فَاصْبَحِيْنَـا (عمرو بن كلثوم).
هَلْ غَادَرَ الشُّعَرَاءُ منْ مُتَـرَدَّمِ (عنترة بن شداد).
عَفَتِ الدِّيَارُ مَحَلُّهَا فَمُقَامُهَـا (لبيد بن ربيعة).
ودع هريرة إن الركب مرتحل، ل (الأعشى).
أقفر منا أهله ملحوب، لـ (عبيد بن الأبرص).
يا دارمية بالعلياء والسند لـ (النابغة الذبياني).

المعلقات هي قصائد طويلة مختارة من الشعر العربي في العصر الجاهلي. وتعتبر هذه المعلقات السبع - بدون نت القصائد أروع وأنفس ما قيل في الشعر العربي القديم لذلك اهتم الناس بها ودونوها وكتبوا شروحا لها، وهي عادة ما تبدأ بذكر الأطلال وتذكر ديار محبوبة الشاعر.

اختلف الدارسون لها في تسميتها وعددها.
فقد قيل: سميت معلقات لأنها مثل العقود النفيسة تعلق بالأذهان.
وقيل: إن هذه القصائد كانت تكتب بماء الذهب وتعلق على أستار الكعبة قبل مجيء الإسلام لذلك يطلق عليها أيضا (المذهّبات).
وقيل: إن حماد الراوية هو من جمع القصائد السبع الطوال وسماها بالمعلقات (السموط). وكان يقول إنها من أعذب ما قالت العرب وإن العرب كانوا يسمونها بالسموط (المعلقات).
وقد ذهب الأدباء والكتاب من بعده لدراستها، مثل ابن الكلبي. وابن عبد ربه صاحب العقد الفريد المعلقات السبع - بدون نت وأضاف بكتابه أمر تعليقها بالكعبة.

قد تجدهم سبع قصائد في كل كتاب قديم لكن منهم من أضاف قصيدة لشاعر وأهمل قصيدة لآخر، فاحتاروا من هم المعلقات السبع - بدون نت فجعلوها عشرا.
فهي " 7 " عند ابن عبد ربه والزوزني وابن رشيق وابن خلدون. و " 9 " عند ابن النحاس. و " 10 " عند التبريزي.
