Tras haber destacado como furibundo fustigador de la secta cristiana en su juventud, una milagrosa aparición de Jesús convirtió a San Pablo en el más ardiente propagandista del cristianismo, que extendió con sus predicaciones más allá del pueblo judío, entre los gentiles: viajó como misionero por Grecia, Asia Menor, Siria y Palestina y escribió misivas (las Epístolas) a diversos pueblos del entorno mediterráneo. Los esfuerzos de San Pablo para llevar a buen fin su visión de una iglesia mundial fueron decisivos en la rápida difusión del cristianismo y en su posterior consolidación como una religión universal. Ninguno de los seguidores de Jesucristo contribuyó tanto como él a establecer los fundamentos de la doctrina y la práctica cristianas.

Las fuentes fundamentales acerca de la vida de San Pablo pertenecen todas al Nuevo Testamento: los Hechos de los Apóstoles y las catorce Epístolas que se le atribuyen, dirigidas a diversas comunidades cristianas.
Saulo (tal era su nombre hebreo) nació en el seno de una familia acomodada de artesanos, judíos fariseos de cultura helenística que poseían el estatuto jurídico de ciudadanos romanos. Después de los estudios habituales en la comunidad hebraica del lugar, Saulo fue enviado a Jerusalén para continuarlos en la escuela de los mejores doctores de la Ley, en especial en la del famoso rabino Gamaliel. Adquirió así una sólida formación teológica, filosófica, jurídica, mercantil y lingüística (hablaba griego, latín, hebreo y arameo).


No debía, sin embargo, residir en Jerusalén el año 30, en el momento de la crucifixión de Jesús; pero habitaba en la ciudad santa seguramente cuando, en el año 36, fue lapidado el diácono Esteban, mártir de su fe. En concordancia con la educación que había recibido, presidida por la más rígida observancia de las tradiciones farisaicas, Saulo se significó por aquellos años como acérrimo perseguidor del cristianismo, considerado entonces una secta herética del judaísmo. Inflexiblemente ortodoxo, el joven Saulo de Tarso estuvo presente no sólo en la lapidación de Esteban, sino que se ofreció además a vigilar los vestidos de los asesinos.

Los jefes de los sacerdotes de Israel le confiaron la misión de buscar y hacer detener a los partidarios de Jesús en Damasco. Pero de camino a esta ciudad, Saulo fue objeto de un modo inesperado de una manifestación prodigiosa del poder divino:
26:12 Ocupado en esto, iba yo a Damasco con poderes y en comisión de los principales sacerdotes,
26:13 cuando a mediodía, oh rey, yendo por el camino, vi una luz del cielo que sobrepasaba el resplandor del sol, la cual me rodeó a mí y a los que iban conmigo.
26:14 Y habiendo caído todos nosotros en tierra, oí una voz que me hablaba, y decía en lengua hebrea: Saulo, Saulo, ¿por qué me persigues? Dura cosa te es dar coces contra el aguijón.
26:15 Yo entonces dije: ¿Quién eres, Señor? Y el Señor dijo: Yo soy Jesús, a quien tú persigues.
26:16 Pero levántate, y ponte sobre tus pies; porque para esto he aparecido a ti, para ponerte por ministro y testigo de las cosas que has visto, y de aquellas en que me apareceré a ti,
26:17 librándote de tu pueblo, y de los gentiles, a quienes ahora te envío,
26:18 para que abras sus ojos, para que se conviertan de las tinieblas a la luz, y de la potestad de Satanás a Dios; para que reciban, por la fe que es en mí, perdón de pecados y herencia entre los santificados.

 Having emerged as furious castigator of the Christian sect in his youth, a miraculous apparition of Jesus turned to St. Paul in the most ardent propagandist of Christianity, which spread with his preaching beyond the Jewish people, among the nations he traveled as a missionary by Greece, Asia Minor, Syria and Palestine and wrote letters (Epistles) to various peoples of the Mediterranean environment. St. Paul's efforts to bring to fruition his vision of a world church were instrumental in the rapid spread of Christianity and its subsequent consolidation as a universal religion. None of the followers of Jesus Christ as much as he helped establish the foundations of Christian doctrine and practice.

The basic sources about the life of St. Paul belong all to the New Testament: the Acts of the Apostles and the fourteen Epistles attributed to him, addressed to various Christian communities.
Saul (such was his Hebrew name) was born into a wealthy family of artisans, Jewish Pharisees Hellenistic culture that possessed the legal status of Roman citizens. After the usual studies in the Jewish community there, Saul was sent to Jerusalem to continue them in the school of the best doctors of the law, especially in the famous rabbi Gamaliel. He thus acquired a solid theological, philosophical, legal, commercial and language training (spoke Greek, Latin, Hebrew and Aramaic).


Should not, however, reside in Jerusalem in the year 30, at the time of the crucifixion of Jesus; but surely he lived in the holy city when, in the year 36, was stoned the deacon Stephen, a martyr to his faith. In accordance with the education he had received, he presided over by the most rigid observance of the Pharisaic traditions, Saul meant for those years as fierce persecutor of Christianity, then considered a heretical sect of Judaism. Inflexibly orthodox, young Saul of Tarsus was present not only in the stoning of Stephen, but also offered to monitor dresses murderers.

The chief priests of Israel entrusted the mission to seek and to detain supporters of Jesus in Damascus. But on the way to this city, Saul was the subject of an unexpected mode of a prodigious manifestation of divine power:
26:12 I Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,
26:13 At midday, O king, going down the road, I saw a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, which surrounded me and those who were with me.
26:14 We all fell to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
26:15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
26:16 But get up and stand on your feet; because for this purpose I have appeared to you to appoint you a minister and a witness of the things you have seen, and of those in which I appear to you,
26:17 delivering you from the people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending,
26:18 to open their eyes to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God; to receive, by faith that is in me, forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified.
