A canary (Serinus canaria), also known as royal walnut or, popularly, walnut is a small singing bird, a member of the Fringillidae family. This bird comes from the Azores, the island of Madeira and the Canary Islands. Its name comes from the latter, because the name of the island comes from the Latin word Canaria which means "dog", because the Romans found many stray dogs. The name of the walnut was given contrary to the canaries of the land, because the canary was taken by pirates and the navigator as a gift to the kings of Europe.
