Instructions
1. Wax serrated knife with candle stub or paraffin. Measure
and cut 13" x 8" rectangle from foam sheet; set aside for
base. Pin pattern outline only onto remaining foam sheet,
trace pattern, and cut out.
2. Cut paper pattern along dashed lines (-----) to create
separate head and wing patterns. Pin patterns to foam sheet,
trace around pattern outlines, and cut out.
3. Glue wing and head to body as indicated for dimensional
look. Glue rooster to front of foam base. Let dry completely,
about 45 minutes.
4. Use scrap foam to round edges. Sand layered foam edges
flush with one another; i.e. rooster's head.
5. Using spoon or clay tool, refer to pattern to compress
foam around eye feathers to 1/4" thickness. Press or sand
feather edges until rounded. Repeat on wing feathers.
6. Use spoon to indent lines between feathers. Use paintbrush
handle to indent eye.
7. Use stiff-bristled paintbrush to scoop small amount of
joint compound from container. Brush compound back and forth
over front and sides of foam, working it into surface. Add
more compound as needed. Let dry. Repeat on back of base; let dry.
8. Sand compound surface just enough to smooth roughness and
expose any air pockets. Do not over-sand. Remove dust with
damp paper towel.
9. Paint entire rooster beige and base dark green; let dry.
10. Apply thin coat of dark brown to wattle, center eye
feather (leaving eye beige), upper wing feathers, and top and
bottom trios of tail feathers. Let dry.
11. Apply thin coat of light brown to remaining tail, wing,
eye, and head feathers. Paint beak golden yellow. Let dry.
12. Dry brush entire rooster with beige. To dry brush, blot
wet paintbrush on paper towel until just damp. Pick up small
amount of paint on bristles and work back and forth over
palette to distribute paint. Wipe excess paint on paper towel.
Using bristle tips only, lightly brush color randomly across
surface to highlight raised areas.
13. Apply thin coat of dusty orange over dark brown areas.
Apply second thin coat of light brown over light brown areas. Let
dry.
14. Dry brush light brown areas with golden yellow.
15. Thin small amount of brown with equal amount of water.
Dry brush mixture over beige and dark green areas for aged appearance.
16. To hang, center and glue saw-tooth hanger to top back
edge of base. Apply glue to nails before inserting into foam. Let dry.
