جرير بن عطية الكلبي اليربوعي التميمي (33 هـ - 110 هـ/ 653 - 728 م) شاعر من بني كليب بن يربوع من قبيلة بني تميم وهي قبيلة في نجد، ولد في بادية نجد و يؤكد ذلك قوله في إحدى مطلع قصائده انظر خليلي بأعلى ثرمداء ضحى ـ والعيس جائلة، أعراضها جُنُفُ. حيث أن ثرمداء مدينة في منطقة الوشم في قلب نجد و في باديتها وادي إسمه وادي الكليبية نسبةً إلى بني كليب قبيلة الشاعر
من أشهر شعراء العرب في فن الهجاء وكان بارعًا في المدح أيضًا. كان جرير أشعر أهل عصره، ولد ومات في نجد، وعاش عمره كله يناضل شعراء زمنه ويساجلهم فلم يثبت أمامه غير الفرزدق والأخطل. كان عفيفاً، وهو من أغزل الناس شعراً. بدأ حياتة الشعرية بنقائض ضد شعراء محليين ثم تحول إلى الفرزدق "ولج الهجاء بينهما نحوا من أربعين سنة" و إن شمل بهجائة أغلب شعراء زمانة مدح بني أمية ولازم الحجاج زهاء العشرين سنة
وصلت أخباره وأشعاره الآفاق وهو لا يزال حيا، واشتغلت مصنفات النقد والأدب به. اقترن ذكره بالفرزدق والأخطل.
