The Oregonian for Android
My biggest complaint is that pictures and the comics frequently disappear when you zoom in. Shading on TV and weather pages also prone to disappearance. Poof, just gone and they won't come back. Font clarity is frequently poor. I use android smart phone and find that navigation can be difficult as the page jumps around too much. Not an impressive experience.
Very difficult to navigate & control, especially compared to previous version. Hard to read on a small screen device and much longer to load than previous version. This may be the last straw as I consider canceling my subscription. Please bring back the old version. UPDATE: After using the app for several days, I am further frustrated and have lowered my rating to one star. The app occasionally locks up & is very difficult to navigate through articles.
I was hopeful when they announced a specific app for the Oregonian, but the current version is worse than the web based version. When you close a story, it flashes a two page view which is annoying. It crashes frequently. But, the worst is that the pages don't always load, leaving you in 'fuzzy mode'. I have yet to see the comics pages load reliably in any issue. Since the news now in this paper is primarily day-old recycled news from other sources, the comics are one of the reasons I keep subscribing.
This app absolutely sucks. Nothing works, everything is confusing, I can't even pull up box scores without the entire app freaking out. Please go back to the old format. I don't care about oregon live, I just want to read the damn paper.
Open the app on my Samsung phone. Everything out of focus. Touch article and open. Close article. Page is now in focus and pictures disappear. Good thing these people don't build rocket ships. One week later... worked for one day now junk again. These people really don't care. All about saving money and playing the game of claiming it makes the customer experience better. NY Times here I come. Changed to 1 star. Zero isn't an option but is my choice. Worse than hate it.
I've never taken time to review an app. Good, bad or indifferent. But this one deserves zero stars. It crashes on my Samsung tablet, refuses to load content, and is extremely user unfriendly to read. The Big O got hosed on this software. Flush this app and bring back the original or it's time to cancel my subscription.
Disappointing, in general. If it weren't for the comics and puzzles, we would probably cancel our subscription. We get better news coverage from other sources.
It's not a bad news app but minor issues add up to an unpleasant experience. Here's a sample off the top of my mind: Inconsistent usage of blue text for non links and black text for links; Search results cannot be clicked on to click through to the resulting stories; unclear navigation icons, especially in the list view. Some improvements over the previous mobile experience include easy navigation to the next section and only needing to single click a story to read it.
This app needs significant bug fixes an reformatting. As is, it is nearly unusable: links don't work, pictures are missing or blurred to unviewable, some pages are weirdly colored and highlighted, the font is too light to read without opening the article, sometimes the pages don't even show up. It just pretty much sucks at this point.
Half the time the pictures are missing. Just a void where the picture belongs. I can never see the cartoons unless I tap on the spaces where they belong, one at a time.
Why give us a new app when you haven't worked all the kinks out of it? Very unpleasant experience. Would prefer to go back to the old app.
I don't know where to start because I can't even get logged in to the app. I have a subscription and it won't let me even verify that so that I can use the app. Very frustrating and disappointing since the only reason I got the subscription in the first place was to be able to read the paper online.
Icons superimposed on top of the articles. Images don't load. Did you test this before you replaced the older app? You claim you listened to the readers with an updated, modern look & feel? This is a fail...
On my Galaxy Tab A it works okay, but at some point every day it can't keep up with the data. Usually on an ad page, or the weather, or comics, or some other dense pic or text page, and it all goes illegibly fuzzy. The only way to continue reading is to close the app and then restart it, and then on page view go back to where I was. It helped to read the help file to learn the options and commands. But overall it really does take work to read the paper using this app as it currently is.
The newspaper image is always blurry and pictures are often missing. It's too bad The Oregonian can't pull it together to bring us a good newspaper or a good app! Big fail on both!
Very difficult to use and hard to navigate. Unfortunately, the "new" version of the browser-based app is not much better. I have subscribed for almost 37 years, but it is starting to look like it isn't really worth it anymore.
This does not work well on my tablet. How about inviting Users(!) to demo it for you?
I read the paper at 3:30am. Old app has today's paper. New app did not have todays yet. KEEP THE OLD APP, IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PUT UP THE NEW PAPER EARLY. I WILL CANCEL MY PAPER. I HAVE HAD OREGONIAN FOR OVER 30 years. Still not better. Please fix these issues.
Trying to go to a different section and either get kicked out or the screen just freezes up. Each time I get kicked out I need to re log in. Why can't the app remember my log in like most android spps do?
Android tablet hostile app. Not even up to beta release level. Slow & crash prone. Sometimes no images, sometimes very low res text, sometimes all text has very dark grey background, etc. Apparently can't reconnect to network after losing connection. A complete p.o.s.
Navigation is almost impossible, you can't manage to keep the content you want on your screen long enough to read any of it. The old version WORKED, at least. At "Free," this version is drastically overpriced.
Not User Friendly, very blurry, and often doesn't fully load articles and photos. If it doesn't get fixed soon, I'll have to look for a different news source for the PNW.
Everything worked before when I received a daily email. WHY DO I have to be a webmaster to read the paper I am paying for ? Sic sic sick
I thought the old app was bad and have been waiting for an update. This version is even worse!! Time to cancel subscrition.
Can't easily navigate newspaper making this app useless. Will be canceling my Oregonian subscription
Horrible. Mom cant read the paper now! What was wrong with the way it was? This is on a ipad pro 12.9 !
This new app was forced on us and it is not an improvement over the prior one. In particular how it displays the comics on my tablet is awful. Unfortunately there is no alternative.
Hard to navigate. Pictures are blurred . Will discontinue reading if not fixed
Hard to navigate. Can't get same view. Hard to change font size.
If this does not improve I will cancel my subscription.
Sunday oregonian not working.
No longer works on my android tablet, bring back the old app or fix this please!!!
This app didn't bring up the newspaper. I Un-installed it still no go.
I love reading the digital Edition this way. Super easy and good user experience
If this is the future I don't care.for it.
Awful....
Galaxy S2 tablet android- very buggy app-tried reinstall both Apps the regular and plus- same app. Better just with an internet browser. Whole Oregonian web arrangement confusing. OREGON LIVE is free web site. OREGONIAN digital edition is subscriber but browser and app mix the the names freely? Which is which? Waste of time!
Can't expand the print. difficult to navigate. In an effort to incorporate advertising The Oregonian is ignoring readers wishes. National news is plagiarized and Other sources can fill local info, time to change.
I could never have imagined they could make an app as bad as the old Oregonian app even worse. Incredibly awkward to navigate, pictures just disappear from the screen, you can't get an entire comic on a tablet screen... I could go on, but why bother...

App and browser are not easy to navigate. Awful, really. Tapping one article to read takes you to a different article several pages away. You can't quickly scan a page to see which articles are of interest. The comics are one.at.a.time if you're lucky. Trying to go back or forward sends you elsewhere. When they recently changed the digital print style, I thought about canceling my subscription. Now I'm sure. The Oregonian used to be an interesting read. Now it's just McNews.
