Portal Smart WiFi Router for Android
Used to work on old phone. Now on a pixel XL it can connect with the management app but then says it is offline. Wash rinse repeat, same result. The ability to only manage from one phone and the method of depairing to switch is a bad design choice. The router itself is generally pretty good, why there can't be configuration feature parity between the app and website I don't understand. It would be nice if one had at least all the features of the other.
The router itself works fine, but the app is severely lacking in features. I haven't had problems accessing the router through my phone as others have (using a note 4) but I wish there were more features. I would especially like to be able to choose which channels it uses.
BEWARE - do not rely on this buggy Bluetooth-only access to your connection to the world. After only two months the app just gives me an error "you're offline" with no troubleshooting, no support, nothing, the devices just died and Portal could care less about helping me understand why.
The app has a lot of bug issues. I contacted their support team. Tried everything they asked and the app still won't connect. Be very aware, I've also have a friend who has the same issue.
Same as so many others. The app (new Pixel 2 phone) connects to the router but won't let me login. However, I'm not sure why so many are posting that this app and Bluetooth are the ONLY ways to set-up and manage the router. That isn't true.
Hard to tell what the app does as it will not connect. Replaced my broken S7 Edge with a new one and the app has never worked since. The portal itself is much faster than my previous Wi-Fi but it usually isn't the first to connect, (I'm running both).
Doesn't work with some Android phones per customer support. Won't work with my Moto X Pure (Andriod 6.0). Support said this, "I have done some digging, and as it turns out, the Moto X line won't work well with Portal unless it's running the latest Android build available for that device. If it doesn't have the latest version, or is rooted, it will have significant issues pairing to Portal. This is not an issue with Portal, but more with the Android device in question, as the latest firmware on the Moto X brings the Bluetooth stack back to compliance."
I've used a lot of Wifi router control apps and this is truly the worst one. I'm not sure why Portal opted to go with Bluetooth as the only way to setup and maintain the devices. All other routers use a username and password login. This app is very annoying to deal with as you can only use it on the device you set the Portal up on and if you want to manage Portal from another device you have to completely reset Portal and set it up on the new device... extremely inconvenient. There are also no ways to block devices from connecting, pause connections to devices, or prioritize speeds to a device. The Portal itself is an absolutely great device, but man is the app lacking features.
Works great so far. I turned on Beamforming and it is apparently on. Bluetooth pairing was difficult for a short time, but then it just worked. I just installed a new cable modem and this continued to work well.
The app basically forgot all of my configurations after I powered the phone off and on. Now, I can't connect to the portal because it doesn't recognize the phone as admin, and can't enable webgui because an Android phone is set as the admin.
So frustrating. Management of this device is a constant headache. Customer support is awful. The app is the worst. Do not buy. This app is just useless. Look at the rating. Waste of money
The router is great, but this app is not. Previously worked, but now refuses to connect to the router, even after reinstall. Going through support now.
Bluetooth wouldn't pair, no help desk support avaiable, no Web page interface available. Might as well be a rock. But it looks super nice.
Much like a lot people, I could not connect to the portal on my Google pixel phone. My wife's iPhone had zero trouble.
The initial setup was very simple. Unlike some other reviewers, my experience was that all my devices were located and connected quickly.
The Portal App doesn't work. I message the tech support about the problem. They just delete my message. Please fix the problem.
App won't detect the router. Ever. Completely useless.
Perfect. Runs very smoothly and gives adequate real time information.
Smart wifi router.Software not smart enough to find the router.Long time unresolved problem.
Really simple setup. And my WiFi is way better. I wish it had parental controls in the app.
Doesn't connect using a LG G5 running Android 7.0
Never works!
The app is better than the device it interacts with.
It suddenly wanted to go through setup again after it had been working. After app update maybe? Now it can't locate my Portal any longer. Uninstalled and reinstalled, no different. Useless.
Fails to connect doesn't give you a choice is to change Internet passwords basically it doesn't work
Terrible app, always fails to connect and once connected there is very little control. It is basically useless and there is no functionality. When will they get something as simple as parental controls??
App can't find portals. Good thing I had the network running. I have two setup in mesh but my app can't find them anymore. To be clear, WiFi works fine... Just the app won't connect. Frustrating!
Had some early teething issues, but has largely delivered on the promise of increased coverage, easy mesh networking, and increased speeds. Looking forward to better management of connected devices bandwidth usage/etc and other enhancements.
Slow, unintuitive and short on features!
No issues so far and have been using it since the campaign ended.
The Portal held up to its bidding. The app couldnt have made the setup any easier. For all people searching for a superior Router for their home network search no more. I have a 2-3000 sq ft 2 story home and after installation I was blown away with its coverage. Fastlane technology separates Portal from the rest .
Router and App work extremely well. Got it set up in about 15 minutes (including updates). Thanks Portal development team. Great job!
Really disappointing
More work
It's hard to complain to much because I don't often think about my router but this app is pretty bare bones. Is this a proxy review of the router? I guess the app will improve as they update the router's firmware?
Regret backing this. Lacks even the basic features. App fails to connect after setting up mesh leaving you with no control over your network. No where near ready for release
The router is great, I'm getting in excess of 100Mbps. But the app stinks. The initial setup worked fine. And even adding a second router as a mesh. Now the app will not connect to either router. I have followed all the help and FAQ suggestions and nothing works.
The router is great the app is junk. Very unresponsive and I switched to bridge mode and now the app won't connect
App won't connect the my phone. Tried everything...

Didn't have any problems with the app. The only unexpected thing that came up was the portal software needed to be updated so that took a few extra minutes. Other than that everything went smoothly and I'm excited to be able to use the portal.
