스마트폰만 들여다본다고 핀잔 듣는 시대는 지났다. 이제는 시와 소설들, 한 번쯤 읽어야지 생각은 했지만 막상 읽기는 어려웠던 문학 작품들을 앱북(App Book)으로 만날 수 있기 때문이다. 아름다운 음악과 영상, 그리고 화면에 흐르는 감성적인 글들은 더 이상 교과서와 시집에서 접했던, 때론 지루하기까지 했던 작품들이 아니다. 글과글사이 문학 앱 시리즈는 문학 작품의 감성에 디지털의 다양한 표현력을 더해 독자들에게 또 다른 감동을 선사한다.




■ 제24회 이상문학상 대상 수상작 [시인의 별]

[시인의 별]은 고려 충렬왕 때의 사람인 안현에 대한 이야기이다. 작가는 1997년 8월 앙카라대학의 라시드 교수가 발견한 17세기 필사본에 실린 ‘고려인 비칙치(서기) 안의 이야기’에 주목하여 이 소설을 썼다. 이 이야기는 안현에 대한 역사적인 기록을 바탕으로 안현과 동일 인물로 상정한 비칙치 안이라는 인물이 옥중에서 지었다는 [채련기]의 내용을 더해 작가가 상상력을 발휘하여 한 편의 소설로 재구성한 것이다. 고려에서 몽골의 드넓은 초원까지 이어지는 안현의 경로를 따라 사랑을 찾아 헤메는 한 남자의 이야기가 전통적인 방식인 ‘주석’ 즉 말 끼워넣기라는 특이한 기법으로 전개된다.
주석1에서 주석7까지 모두 일곱 개의 주석으로 구성된 이 소설은 이 책을 읽는 독자로 하여금 소설가의 시공을 초월한 상상력에 힘입어, 체험의 복원과 삶의 원형 탐구라는 새로운 경험을 하게 한다. 평론가 권영민은 역사 속에 한 줄의 기록으로 남아 있는 이야기의 흔적을 찾아서 시간과 공간을 뛰어넘는 치밀한 상상력으로 거기에 주석을 붙여 하나의 이야기를 만들어 가는 수법은 이 작가만이 가진 역량이라고 하였다. 작가 자신도 이 작품이 사마천의 열전 문체, 사전체(史傳體)를 모방하여 씌어졌다고 밝힌 바 있다. 부제로 붙은 ‘채련기 주석 일곱 개’는 가장 복고적이고 보수적인 작업을 통하여 역사적 사실과 기록 속에서 시공을 초월한 삶의 원형을 발견하려는 작가의 의도를 드러낸다.


■ 이인화 작가의 ‘수상 소감’ 중에서

지금 우리는 사람들의 일상생활이 지역과 국가를 넘어선 전 지구적인 차원에서 재조직되는 과도기를 살고 있습니다. 변해야 하고 변하지 않을 수 없다는 말들이 메아리치는 현재의 정보혁명은 우리 모두에게 곤혹스럽습니다. 지금 우리가 겪고 있는 변화는 과거 산업혁명과 달리 정보통신기술과 생명공학, 신(新)인공물질 등 각각 다른 발전 사이클을 가진 여러 개의 지식산업이 동시에 진행되기 때문에 언제, 어떤 형식으로 사회가 안정될 것인지 예측하기 어렵습니다.
저는 어쩌면 무한히 정신없이 계속될 수도 있는 이 같은 변화 때문에 문학의 역할이 중요하고 유의미하다고 생각합니다. 모든 지식인들의 논의가 글로벌 판타지와 글로벌 포비아 사이에서 갑론을박의 과정성을 헤메고 있는 지금도 사람들은 살아야 하고 자신의 자존심을 지켜야 하기 때문입니다. 문학은 그것이 안고 있는 꿈 때문에 우리를 살게 하고 인간으로서의 기품을 지키게 만듭니다.
모든 인간적인 욕망들의 사랑스러움, 착한 감정들의 진실함, 인간 정신의 자유, 덕(德)의 고귀함. 시대에 적응하기 위해 많은 것을 버릴 수 있지만 우리가 마지막까지 버릴 수 없는 이 최후의 것들이 《시경》으로부터 이어지는 문학의 꿈속에 담겨 있습니다. 저는 이 같은 꿈의 무거움 때문에 문학은 세계화의 기로에 선 사람들에게 흔들리지 않는 하나의 지점을 보여 줄 수 있다고 생각합니다.

《날개》로 대표되는 이상의 문학이 ‘골방’의 상상력에 근거하여 그 비상을 꿈꾸었다면, 이인화 씨의 경우 드넓은 ‘초원’의 상상력을 발동하여 시공을 초월하는 하나의 완결된 작품을 만들고 있다. 언뜻 보기에는 이 두가지의 상상력이 서로 다른 것 같지만 사실은 동질성을 지닌다는 것을 알 수 있다. - 이어령(문학평론가, 이화여대 석좌교수)

• 지은이: 이인화

서울대 국문과를 졸업하고 같은 대학원에서 석사, 박사학위를 받았다. 1988년 계간 《문학과 사회》로 등단하여 89편의 문학평론을 발표했다. 1992년 제1회 작가세계문학상 수상작인 《내가 누구인지 말할 수 있는 자는 누구인가》를 시작으로 《영원한 제국》, 《인간의 길》, 《초원의 향기》, 《시인의 별》, 《하늘꽃》, 《하비로》 등 18편의 소설을 발표했다. 밀리언셀러를 기록하며 한국적 팩션의 새로운 지평을 열었던 《영원한 제국》은 미국, 프랑스, 스페인, 일본, 중국, 대만, 몽골 등에 번역되었고 영화화되기도 했다. 오늘의 젊은 예술가상, 추리소설 독자상, 중한청년학술상, 이상문학상 등을 수상했다.
창작 발레 [신시21], 설치미술 [아슈켈론의 개], 오페라 [눈물 많은 초인], 영화 [청연] 등의 시나리오를 썼고 온라인 게임(MMORPG) [쉔무], [길드워] 등의 스토리 작업에 참여했다. 웹전략 게임(MMORTS) [인페르노 나인]을 개발했으며 영화·애니메이션 시나리오 저작도구인 ‘스토리헬퍼’를 개발했다.
