A Assembleia de Deus chegou ao Brasil por intermédio dos missionários suecos Gunnar Vingren e Daniel Berg, que aportaram em Belém, capital do Estado do Pará, em 19 de novembro de 1910, vindos dos Estados Unidos. A princípio, frequentaram a Igreja Batista, denominação a que ambos pertenciam nos Estados Unidos. Os missionários suecos traziam a doutrina do batismo no Espírito Santo, com a glossolalia — o falar em línguas espirituais (estranhas) — como a evidência de manifestações que já vinham ocorrendo em reuniões de oração nos Estados Unidos e também de forma isolada em outros países, principalmente naquelas que eram conduzidas por Charles Fox Parham, mas teve seu apogeu através de um de seus principais discípulos, um pastor leigo negro, chamado William Joseph Seymour, na rua Azusa, Los Angeles, em 1906.[2]

A nova doutrina trouxe divergência. Enquanto um grupo aderiu, outro rejeitou. Assim, em duas assembleias distintas, conforme relatam as atas das sessões[3] , os adeptos do pentecostalismo foram desligados e, em 18 de junho de 1911[4] [5] , juntamente com os missionários estrangeiros, fundaram uma nova igreja e adotaram o nome de Missão de Fé Apostólica, que já era empregado pelo movimento de Los Angeles, mas sem qualquer vínculo administrativo com William Joseph Seymour. A partir de então, passaram a reunir-se na casa de Celina de Albuquerque. Mais tarde, em 18 de janeiro de 1918 a nova igreja, por sugestão de Gunnar Vingren, passou a chamar-se Assembleia de Deus, em virtude da fundação das Assembleias de Deus nos Estados Unidos, em 1914, em Hot Springs,Arkansas, mas, sem qualquer ligação institucional entre ambas as igrejas.

A Assembleia de Deus no Brasil expandiu-se pelo estado do Pará, alcançando o Amazonas e propagou-se para o Nordeste, principalmente entre as camadas mais pobres da população. Chegou ao Sudeste pelos idos de 1922, através de famílias de retirantes do Pará, que se portavam como instrumentos voluntários para estabelecer a nova denominação aonde quer que chegassem. Nesse ano, a igreja teve início no Rio de Janeiro, no bairro de São Cristóvão, e ganhou impulso com a transferência de Gunnar Vingren, de Belém, em 1924, para a então capital da República. Um fato que marcou a igreja naquele período foi a conversão através de um folheto evangelístico de Paulo Leivas Macalão, filho de um general e precursor do assim conhecido Ministério de Madureira.

A influência sueca teve forte peso na formação assembleiana brasileira, em razão da nacionalidade de seus fundadores, e porque à igreja pentecostal escandinava, principalmente a Igreja Filadélfia de Estocolmo, que, além de ter assumido nos anos seguintes o sustento de Gunnar Vingren e Daniel Berg, enviou outros missionários para dar suporte aos novos membros em seu papel de fazer crescer a nova Igreja. Desde 1930, quando se realizou um concílio da igreja na cidade de Natal, a Assembleia de Deus no Brasil passou a ter autonomia interna, sendo administrada exclusivamente pelos pastores residentes no Brasil, sem contudo perder os vínculos fraternais com a igreja na Suécia. A partir de 1936 a igreja passou a ter maior colaboração das Assembleias de Deus dos Estados Unidos através dos missionários enviados ao país, os quais se envolveram de forma mais direta com a estruturação teológica da denominação. The Assembly of God arrived in Brazil through the Swedish missionaries Daniel Berg and Gunnar Vingren, who arrived in Belém, Pará State capital, on November 19, 1910, from the United States. In principle, attended the Baptist Church, a denomination that both belonged in the United States. Swedish missionaries brought the doctrine of baptism in the Holy Spirit with glossolalia - speaking in spiritual tongues (strange) - as evidence of events that had already occurred in prayer meetings in the US and also in isolation in other countries, especially those that were conducted by Charles Fox Parham, but had its heyday through one of his leading disciples, a black lay pastor named William Joseph Seymour, the Azusa Street, Los Angeles, in 1906. The new doctrine brought divergence. While one group joined another rejected. Thus, in two separate assemblies, as reported by the minutes of the meetings [3], supporters of Pentecostalism were off and on 18 June 1911 [4] [5] along with foreign missionaries founded a new church and adopted the name of the Apostolic Faith Mission, which was already employed by the Los Angeles movement, but without any administrative ties with William Joseph Seymour. Since then, they began to meet in the home of Celina Albuquerque. Later, on January 18, 1918 the new church, at the suggestion of Gunnar Vingren, came to be called the Assembly of God, because the foundation of the Assemblies of God in the United States in 1914 in Hot Springs, Arkansas, but without any institutional link between the two churches.

The Assembly of God in Brazil expanded by the State of Pará, reaching the Amazon and spread to the Northeast, especially among the poorest sections of the population. He came to Southeast gone by 1922, through migrants families of Pará, which is carried as voluntary instruments to establish the new name wherever it came. This year, the church began in Rio de Janeiro, in the neighborhood of Saint Kitts and gained momentum with the transfer of Gunnar Vingren of Bethlehem in 1924 to the then capital of the Republic. A fact that marked the church at that time was the conversion through a gospel tract Paul Leiva Macalão, son of a general and precursor of well known Ministry of Madureira.

The Swedish influence was strong weight in the Brazilian assembleiana training, as to the nationality of its founders, and why the Scandinavian Pentecostal church, especially the Philadelphia Church in Stockholm, which, besides having assumed the following years the livelihood of Gunnar Vingren and Daniel Berg sent other missionaries to support new members in their role to grow the new church. Since 1930, when they held a church council in the city of Natal, the Assembly of God in Brazil started to have internal autonomy, and is administered exclusively by the resident pastors in Brazil, without losing the fraternal ties with the church in Sweden. From 1936 the church began to have greater collaboration of the US Assemblies of God through missionaries sent to the country, which involved more directly with the theological structure of the denomination.
