Blood App

This application has been developed by Dr.Antony Keene.Blood App is a tool based on simple mathematical algorithms, which can be used to predict the initial haemoglobin (Hb) level at the commencement of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). In addition, the App can be used to accurately predict the Hb level if Red Blood Cell (RBC) units are added to the CPB prime as well as predicting the number of RBC units necessary to achieve a specific Hb on the pump. The mathematical equations used employ the patient’s approximate blood volume and the simple dilution effects on the original Hb level of CPB prime, anaesthetic fluids, urine output and first pass blood removed by the perfusionist when initiating CPB. The blood volume is calculated by the Nadler Method, which uses height and weight to accurately determine the blood volume. The App can also be used to determine post operative Hb levels in non-cardiac surgery using preoperative Hb, height, weight and expected or measured blood loss during surgery or acute trauma.
